Agnetha always gets the choreography wrong. She was definitely not a dancer. Frida on the other hand got it right
@kyachdistent13018 ай бұрын
Can't recommend instrumentals-they're not songs. 'Rikky'Rock'N'Roller' is a song anyway, it's just cos they wouldn't use it, B&B took the instrumentation from it. At least 'Arrival' has voices on it, even if no words, though Frida did it with words in 1983 as a single.

A truly amazing, electric performance from the ABBAs! I've heard many gay guys say this one could turn them straight. LOL. But, since you mentioned 'I've Been Waiting For You', you really should check that one out too. Thanks for reacting to this classic performance, D. Frida's epic 'leg on piano' moment is priceless. She really gave it her all in performances. The song was only released as a single in limited territories and wasn't wildly successful, except for a few countries. Perhaps its B-side "I've Been Waiting For You" would have stood a better chance in the charts. It was one of the stand-out tracks on the 'ABBA' album and the single that never was.
@kyachdistent13018 ай бұрын
It likely wouldn't-the inbuilt prejudice against record-makers from any country not the US or UK would not have any chance and no radio station played it outside Europe, but IN Europe, it carried on their climb, getting higher than a few others in Germany, and Top 3 in Austria, and Top 10 in Sweden and Denmark.

It's still baffles me why this single flopped so hard, it's one of the most exciting early recordings from the band. Very glam rock indeed. And can we talk about Frida's legs? Omg could rival that of jLos! These two ladies were Goddesses of Pop, bow down peeps
@steffichristina81692 жыл бұрын
Why only Frida's legs? Agnethas are just as great🥲😍
@kyachdistent13018 ай бұрын
Why? It's called institutional racism and inbuilt societal prejudice. ABBA were deemed a novelty act who did Eurovision and, worse, they're not from the UK or the bleeding US. Therefore they had no chance to make it anywhere, it was termed laughable for anyone to even think of making it outside their 'little shores' and Eurovision was their only chance for a tiny bit of universal fame with one song if they got it right. Well they did and they had their moment. It passed-supposedly. In a real world with normal rules, 'So Long' has No.1 written all over it, and did hit big around Europe, continuing their climb, but any single following a Eurovision win by an act that's not a UK or US one is not gonna be deemed playable-no one will "waste their time" with it back then. It's not gonna get plays-so how's it gonna chart. Result: It got no plays! So of course it didn't chart! the follow-up only got in there by sheer luck and chance thanks to a publicity stunt surrounding a sham-wedding between 2 radio stations in the miserable UK that afforded it a few more radio plays, enough to get it into the Top 40, but elsewhere, including the US, 'I Do' was a massive hit, and began their No.1 stream of singles in Australia.

So long" has many interesting things to analyze How well you say, its rhythm is in the similar glam rock style of Waterloo, it was recorded in 1974, months after ABBA's triumph at Eurovision And since the reissue of “Ring Ring” after “Waterloo” barely made it into the UK Top 40, ABBA's search for a second hit to reinforce “Waterloo” focused on “So long” precisely because of its rhythm and style in the vein of "Waterloo" But it didn't even make it onto the UK charts The following year ABBA would try "I do I do I do I do I do" another Top 40, until finally it was "S.O.S." that broke the ‘one hit’ curse to #6 in the UK and #15 in the US, and from then on ABBA was the hit-after-hit machine. "So long" I think is more aggressive than "Waterloo", and at the same time more fun Agnetha and Frida do one of their most memorable choreographies And the live performance on the 1977 Australia Tour is spectacular. "So long" is a very good song that unfortunately did not have commercial success But ABBA always included it in their first TV specials until 1976 included. Dereck, if you want so much to see ABBA live, and we fans to see you enjoy them, look for: He is your brother (Australia 77) Hole in your soul (London 1979) See you in another video A cordial greeting from my country Argentina

at least a decent number 11 on the charts in Germany and me too, always like this better than Waterloo actually. It was released by the end of 1974 and was the pre/lead single of the upcoming ABBA album which would include I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do, SOS and Mamma Mia as further singles during 1975. So Long is catchy and sexy as hell. The third voice is really strong on that one. What a contrast to the next single: I Do I Do.... PS. from the more recent stuff you're still missing out on Our Last Summer, another could have been single hit song from 1980's Super Trouper.

OK, this was the first pop song I fell in love with. Many many years after its release, in the 80s. So about 15 years later! But I was about 4 years old and I don't know why but this song just dragged me screaming into enjoying pop music. Hearing it again now, its a very dense, thick and heavy sound for Abba. Doesn't sound much like anything else they did. And those trumpets at the end, amazing. I guess its from the same album and era as Waterloo.

Good reaction Dereck. So Long was one of the first new tracks recorded after ABBA had won the Eurovision Song Contest in April 1974, this was an A-side single in the UK in November as the record company thought it would be successful due to some similarities to Waterloo. It wasn't, it didnt even chart in the UK though I belive it went Top 20 in Sweden, Germany and a couple of other places. Bjorn and Benny these days shrug it off as not being one of their best and that it shouldn't have been a single. Its very much of its time, ABBA experimenting with Glam rock and the Spector-esque 'wall of sound'. Apparently when they recorded it they were in a private swimming pool hall trying out guitar sounds with amplifiers and the wall tiles were coming off due to the volume. Theres some nice footage of the track in ABBA-The Movie and a whole heap of performances on youtube for this one. It may not have been a huge hit but, ABBA certainly spent a long of time promoting it throughout Europe.
