Judging by the comments people caught a totally different tone to the song than I did. To be honest we were having a blast on stream so it may have had me in a silly mood lol I thought it was just about a cheating girlfriend. At least you know I'm capturing the first reactions for these :)

It was funny seeing you to find that humor. Not sure if I was laughing with you at the moment but now that I look at it again, it is sort of silly to hear the obvious in such a calming melody. Perhaps this one was written with a tongue in cheek style. Even the Eagles, themselves, have said before that they don't know what their songs are about. Ambiguity makes their music timeless. Loving your reactions here.

I love the first take aspect of your reactions. You were mostly right about Hotel california. However, the danger of a first take is that expressing a meaning before you have heard the whole story is dicey.

To further sort of , further explain my thoughts on this song. It is not about a gold digging bitch, but rather a woman who made bad choices early and got stuck. The firey eyes are not those of a bad boy, they are the eyes of someone who is consumed with her and not the guy with hands as cold as ice.. He is the guy she should have been with, like the boy she knew in school, that she now regrets dismissing. And THAT is why she is drinking and looking at the stars. She knows she screwed up and cannot escape. Ala, you can check out any thime you like but you can never leave. Also, You did not catch the double antendre in HC. Checking out is a popular euphemism for dying.

@@SyedRewinds Snoozerpoo's right. Everyone involved knows they're "living in a lie" but each one doesn't see a clean way out of the traps they set for themselves chasing the what they initially thought they wanted. Old dude knows he was buying young love. Young chick knows she was selling herself for comfort. Maybe the young dude still believes in his dreams, but the experienced ones recognize he's still living a fantasy.

Syed's first time hearing song, lighten up. It's just a song. Glen Frey said they were in a bar watching women trying to pick up rich men, and said look at those lyin eyes. That is what inspired the song. Watch history of the Eagles.

Actually this song is about the members going out and all the women that throw themselves at them. They talk about it. All the plastic women in LA with old men at home, but throwing themselves at the members of the band 🥴

I like how they point out that she is lying to both of them at the same time by repeating the chorus after everything she tells them. Then, in the end, she is alone and she is lying to herself trying to convince herself that she is happy.

I saw the Eagles in concert just two years ago, absent the wonderful Glenn Frey. They were old men fanned out across the stage in a line of guitars with Don Henley on the drums behind them. And they didn't miss a beat. Each song was a masterpiece of musicianship. It brought me to tears over and over again. For them it was always the music. No backup singers, no autotune. Just the music they made together. I came away from it saying it was the best concert I'd ever been to & I'm an old dog who saw Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and the Doors back in the day. The Eagles were and are a great band.

I have said for decades that “Lyin Eyes” is my favorite Eagles song and I can’t even tell you why. It’s something about the constant movement of it, the cyclical rhythm. Or the storytelling, the sheer wordsmithery. The sadness to it. It just hits me smack dab in my soul every time. Great choice and reaction. ❤️

It's the lyrics, which are smart, thoughtful, evocative, and tangible; It's the arrangements, especially in the vocal harmonies - but listen to the guitars play off of each other; and, above all of that, there's a clear connection between the message of the lyrics, the mood of the music, and the tone of the vocalist(s). A great collection of gifted instrumentalists who could all -sing-.

You mentioned the chorus changing meaning as applied to each verse, that is a fairly common thing in country music, the play on words of the chorus and often the title of the song. Tim McGraw's "Don't take the girl" comes to mind. I think Eagles music was wildly popular partly because they drew from many influences and blended them in a very proficient way musically and lyrically. Really enjoying your channel!

The story behind this song is that Henley and Frey used to hang out at Dan Tana's Italian Restaurant and Bar in West Hollywood before going next door to the famous Troubador club. They would often sit there and make up stories about the lives of the people that they saw at the bar. Very often they would see young beautiful women with much older and obviously wealthy men. They knew that these girls were with the men not for love but for the money and power that comes with that type of relationship. They imagined that the girls would often step out on their sugar daddy to find the love and romance that their life is missing.

The "guitars" that you liked after the line "She thinks about a boy she knew in school" are actually mandolins played by Eagles member Bernie Leadon, who is a talented multi-instrumentalist (guitar, banjo, mandolin, steel guitar, dobro) and also played in bands like Dillard & Clark, The Flying Burrito Brothers and (briefly) The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

For me the song is simply about a woman who used her 'tools' and married for money (her plan) and will not give it up for anything but she receives gratification from outside of that marriage, her life is miserable as sin because of the lie she's living and the choice she made, even though she ended up with the riches. I've always considered it as a song sung by someone who knows her from school, maybe someone who really loved her.

I agree with the previous commenter. I’ve been enjoying this tune for damn near fifty years and it has never made me laugh. True, the lyrics are very clever, but the story is certainly melancholy if not sad. And…I’ve never thought of the lady as a “gold digger”. So many people crave passion and settle, instead, on stability…then crave the missing passion. After a lifetime of relationships I understand the profound truth that this song conveys. Thanks for reaction!

My all time favourite Eagles song. Bought the album in 1975 when it came out (One Of These Nights) and to this day I still never get tired of hearing this song. It's actually my alarm on my phone in the morning. Glenn Frey had such an easy voice to listen to. Henley is brilliant also. Actually every one of them could sing. Back when musicians actually played their instruments and could sing live. One of my two favourite albums is still The Eagles Greatest Hits 1971-1975 - Every single track on it is fantastic. Best of My Love, Tequila Sunrise, Lyin' Eyes, Take It Easy, Take it to the Limit, Desperado - can't even pick a favourite track on it other than this one.

While the first verse in it is GREAT, the second verse, after the chorus, is one of my ALL TIME favorite verses in a song that I've ever listened to because it is just so lyrical and descriptive and brings a smile to my face every single time I listen to it! Enjoy!

The lines make you chuckle because they are true. That one "I guess every form of refuge has it's price." So true -so true. And the first two lines of the song are so true too. Everyone know this is about a girl who married an old man for his money and the price was that she has to cheat on him to get the love she wants. This and Already Gone are IMO the two best Eagles songs with lyrics-other than Hotel California. All 3 are way above the other songs IMO only.

Lots of differences between the Eagles on Hotel California and the band when Lyin’ Eyes was recorded a bit earlier. They added rock guitarist Joe Walsh who replaced Bernie Leadon. They started out together as the backing band for country/rock singer Linda Ronstadt and recorded her third album with her. My favorite album of theirs was Desperado which was kind of a theme album set in the Old West of the US. They evolved into a pretty great rock band.

I took her out to dinner one last time, stood up, went to the jukebox to play a song. I sat back down & told her that the next song coming up I was dedicating specifically to her. She thought that it would be some kind of romantic song or something, but it was this. The look on her face was priceless when this came on. No regrets for me. As far as I'm concerned, this is the ORIGINAL diss track....

You missed the boat. It's about 50 miles out to sea. No gold digger. She's married, in a beautiful house without love. She goes and sees someone she wishes she could love like she used to when she was young. But has to go back to her beautiful and comfortable cold house. Her old man (husband) knows she lying. He can see it in her eyes.

You were on the dot in regard to how they choose who singes what. I guess thats just ant comes with having multiple vocalist in a band. Listen to "Take it to the limit" for a nice surprise.
