You know I had to comeback with another Dire Straits videos as the Sultans Of Swing video did so well! Brothers In Arms is a song that completely threw me off when I first heard it. It was nothing like I expected it to be. The craftsmanship behind the song though is something we all need to appreciate. Make sure to watch the whole video to hear my thoughts.

Young man, (I'm old enough to be your grandmother), do not apologize for your reactions. They are YOUR reactions. It took me a long time before I fully understood what he was saying. But listen to one of his live versions of this song. He starts out low and it rises to a crescendo, It wrings every emotion out of your soul. It's absolutely worth a revisit. As a military veteran, this song hits home.

Your comparison of Mark Knopfler's ability to have the guitar tell a story just like David Gilmour is *_exactly_* why Gilmour and Knopfler are my two favorite guitarists. You nailed it, man. Next Dire Straits you should check out is Telegraph Road (live), then Money For Nothing, and Walk Of Life. That'll pretty much lock in most of their big radio hits. But the catalog goes so much deeper than that, and much of it is worth experiencing.

All these years after it was released, I can still barely listen to it without tears streaming down my face. Our young reviewer didn't recognize the images of the men blinded by mustard gas and see the waves of troops going over the top and the later images from WWII and beyond. Not his fault, they likely barely touch on such things any more.

I bought this album when it first came out in 1985. This song made an impact on war from a soldier's perspective. However, it's been a song that haunted me since 2003. Seeing teenage young soldiers in Iraq pull their mortally wounded sergeant (old enough to be their father) out of an armored personnel carrier is something that will stay with me. Hearing those young voices trying to convince themselves he will be ok by saying "We got you, sergeant. You're going to be ok. Hang on. We got you" will stay with me until God has had enough. Only the dead have seen the end of war.

Firstly, kudos on you for your open-mindedness and musical adventurousness! Ignore the negativity. Secondly, I'm glad you listened to this track, and whilst it is very different from Sultans, it does showcase Mark's range and incredible musicianship, doesn't it? Thirdly, if you are now in the mood for something upbeat (with another awesome Mark guitar riff) check out Dire Straits' "Money for Nothing," which was another of their bigger hits. There is a concert/live version out there, as well as the official music video (very eighties but very entertaining in making the self-parody evident). While watching it, keep in mind that Mark wrote the song after overhearing some workers in a hardware store; all the TVs in the shop were tuned to MTV, and Mark wrote down their remarks about the musicians in the music videos verbatim, which became the lyrics of the song. Finally, let me say again that I am very much enjoying your reactions, and process of discovery, so do not let any one deter you! To quote someone else, 'You do you, THEY'LL have to adjust'.🙂

As an ex serviceman, this was our anthem to remember our Brothers in Arms who paid the ultimate sacrifice and for those still serving. Doing a lot in Ukraine at the moment and this is still an anthem for those brave Ukrainians who have also paid for their freedom with their lives. Its a beautifully haunting song and the way Mark Knopfler makes the guitar weep and cry almost, is just a skill not many have. Keep you reactions honest mate, that's the best quality. P.S. Gilmour is a brilliant guitarist, just a different style, but Gilmour, Knopfler, Clapton, all legends. Also if this is catering to more mature listeners, who gives a rats backside lol, I'm in that bracket and would love one of those leaving that kind of comment to come and meet me and comment on my age 😉😉 Great job.

10 out of 10 young man, I believe it was released in 84 not long after the Falklands war. We lost 256 out there, and even today many an ex-serviceman will have a tear in his eyes when they hear this and remember their lost mates. Keep doing what your doing it’s your reaction and you prove time and again you have the heart and soul to appreciate the message within this particular song, Namely it’s anti-war, and the strongest opponents of war are ex-servicemen, those that have been there, done it seen it and lived through it.

The word I’d use to describe Mark’s playing is, tasteful. Who cares about the age of the listener? Aren’t we all here to appreciate music? This was also the last song on the album at a time when albums told stories. It closed out the story and was so engaging at the end of the ride. Now if you roll back to track #2 - Money For Nothing, you need to get the proper mindset on. Imagine being in high school, there were only 3-4 channels of TV to watch and you stayed up late Friday nights for the one rock music show. Then cable TV started to be everywhere but still you couldn't get your music fix. Then along came the news that a new cable channel devoted to music was launching, MTV. You and your friends raced home from school to watch the launch, and along comes Money For Nothing. (oh and if you do listen to it, crank it up) Also this was some of the first computer generated graphics ever. Til then everything was still hand drawn.

Mark Knopfler wrote so many songs that sound nothing like eachother, mixing different music styles and different subjects. Next to 6 Dire Straits ablums Mark also wrote the music for 9 movies("Local Hero: and ":The princess bride" for instance) and just released his 10th solo album.

I have loved Mark Knopfler since 1979. I was driving to work and Sultans of Swing came on the radio. I pulled over so i could listen and get the name of the band. Have seen him live three times and it never gets old. He calls his guitar his "best voice". BTW, he' s a Geordie.

Yo Molly Boy let me tell you quickly about my history with this band. I first got into them because of their hit 80s single Money For Nothing, which is a pop / heavy rock song very unlike most of their other material. I gave their other material a serious listen because of my love for that one song. Now, years later, I'm way more into other songs of theirs than the first one I'd heard. It's natural for you to hear something once, have one reaction, dig more, and find in time that your like or dislike changes. All that said, the most important thing is that you gave a couple songs a listen, and you'll listen to more.

@kevink9938 another problem with money for nothing, nowadays, is that its lyrics make prominent use of the 'f' word for homosexual, something that was common parlance when I was a teenager but not now that I'm 53. Nowadays most channels/stations either bleep out a bunch of the lyrics or strip out the entire verse. So reactors might not be getting the full song. I get that that verse could be offensive, but I also get that it was written like 40 years ago and that I don't think the intent of the lyrics was to be homophobic but rather to poke fun at people who used the slang.

This is not about any particular war, this is about all wars. One friend told me that his grandfather once said that sometimes he was feeling more close to the guys in the trenches on the opposite side of the battlefield than to his own command somewhere behind. There are heroes and comrades on both sides. They don't know each other, but are enemies. War is always boils down to people bound by their duty killing each other, when in other circumstances they would be brothers in arms.

Well, firstly, that criticism is clearly motivated out of a dislike of "older generations," and the music that "older generations" happened to have enjoyed. Secondly, it actually stuns me the extent to which younger generations have come to appreciate--and even prefer--the music of their elders: I'm 67, and I can report that when I was in my teens, twenties and thirties, MY generation came close to totally rejecting musical genres that our parents preferred. The story is excellent & Mark is simply stunning on the guitar. This music is just timeless & I think that's why they're still so loved today & why younger people discovering them love them just as much as those who were around & lucky enough to be there first time round!! And you are the first person I've heard say what I've always thought about the feeling of the guitar playing of Mark Knopfler and David Glimour... I say "their guitar makes you melt inside..."!! The Brothers in Arms CD (compact disc) was nearly mandatory to have for people who bought a CD player in mid 1980's. It was one of the first all digital albums at the time. You of course could get it as LP album; but anyone who bought a CD player also did get the BiA CD.. even the people who bought a CD player for mainly classical music

Hi, it's the older generation here. We were under the impression that all young people are half-wits and even though we are generally correct you seem to buck the trend. You were correct this was a song inspired by the Falkands War and even got the year right. That dealt with you were equally correct in suggesting there is a comparison to be made between Mark and David Gilmour. It is the emotion evoked in their playing. Nobody can beat SRV for technical brilliance but these two have that special something. Fine work, young Sir. We will continue to watch you as we sit about, wonder what is going on, and get older by the day. Keep it up.

My son is 40 in two months and two of the band he likes - among others are Slipknot and the Beach Boys so never worry about liking different styles. It`s a Song about first Worldwar............ , and the end of the cold war me was an gunner on a german tank, this year, 30 years ago, me meed this comrades, and we ´re still together since 30 years , "and in the fear and alarm, they did not desert me", we are brothers in / at arms till then, but that is not the storie, this song is a masterpiece, it explained war, for people that never stayed in tranches, or in a warmachine like me,......but it brings down all the horrors u have to go thru, how your mindmachine goes round, your struggels, your fear, ............ "Dire Straits", did it with music and words.......

Fuck the haters! I love 70s classic rock, 80s heavy metal, 80s pop, 90s nu metal and there is also a lot of great bands from 00 and 10s, different music for different times, vibes and situations. Everything with skill, passion or soul. So many people cant understand that someone can listen to more then one type of music. Just watched the sultan’s of swing video, it lead me to this , my generation ( I’m 54 ) tends to gravitate towards “ our music “ we do Listen to newer stuff too , but to us Gen X lot , there’s nothing quite like the music from our era , it’s good to see a young guy like yourself listening to and seemingly enjoying it, I’ve watched a few “ reaction “ channels but never subscribed to any, but I subbed to yours , “Brothers in Arms “ is a fantastic, timeless track , along with sultans and money for nothing ( which I’m about to watch ) by the way , I started playing guitar 14 months ago, ( tried when I was 18 , but was way too difficult back then, girls and cars got in the way ) good luck with your guitar journey 👍👍🤠🎸
