I was on the front row, and when he sat down on the edge of the stage, he was right in front of me. When he fretted up the cigarette, I knew it was going to be an iconic memory for me. I'll cherish it for the rest of my life. Absolutely iconic moment in my life.

I don't know where specifically in the crowd he was in but my older brother was there too. Said it was the most iconic, amazing, unforgettable moment that he had ever experienced. He wanted to take me as well but I was only 8 at the time. When he got back it was like 2-3 am. He woke me up to tell me all about it. He said he couldn't wait until I woke up to share it.

As a guitarist there is one thing Eddie did I have never figured out, he didn't just play the stings on the guitar he played the "whole guitar". Watch his hands and fingers, walking the backside of the neck, how he taps the body and the hammer on and off's are just crazy off the charts. Watch his cord hand and how it applies pressure to the neck and fret board. He is the quintessential master of the guitar.

RIP Eddie... I first saw VH open for Black Sabbath. Yikes what a night! Eddie was an amazing guitarist and influenced so many, similar to the way Hendrix did a decade earlier. My beef with VH was their songs/compositions mostly juvenile level - which was their market and made them big bucks! My personal GOAT was Stevie Ray. Loved his mix of blues, rock and Hendrix style plus the guy played from the heart. Every time! I was fortunate to hear him perform 8 times before he passed. Texas Flood live at El Mocambo is a religious experience. I also enjoyed Joe Satriani as others have mentioned. Great live shows! If you want your mind blown (again) check out BucketHead. It was an incredible concert, and still is in the top 5 concerts I've ever seen. I love when people discover stuff they've never heard before, and are as blown away as we were the first time we heard/saw it. That look of incredulity on your face was funny, knowing you just heard something that blew your mind. 😁 Keep exploring the old stuff, and broaden your musical horizons. Happy listening. 🤟

I saw Van Halen twice in concert at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in the 80's. Back when David lee Roth, the original singer. They put on a great show. I'm 57 now. I enjoy your reactions.

Or if he made mistakes, just kept playing and did it that way again so it looked like he meant to. (Lesson taught by Eddie and Alex’ father)

I believe this was actually his warm-up routine before a gig, just freestyling between snippets from different songs and someone else from the band suggested he should actually do that during the gig on stag as well... and the rest is history.

EVH wrote the soundtrack of the best times of my life! First saw Van Halen at the US festival in 83 and a number of times after. I’ve wrestled with the fact that I cried more when Edward died than I did when my father passed! Don’t get me wrong my father and I were very close but Edward influenced my life in ways that were as important as what I received from pops. RIP king Edward.

I feel blessed to have seen Eddie 6 times! In fact, VH was my first concert back in '82 on the Diver Down tour, and he's been my favorite ever since. One of the things I love most about him, aside from his otherworldly talent, was that he was almost always smiling. He looked genuinely happy to be up there on the stage, like some kind of wizard, blowing people's minds!

Funny lots of people don't know that Eddie and Alex started on piano and their dad use to take them all around competing and winning of course. Later it was Alex on guitar and Eddie on drums but from what I understand Alex heard Eddie messing around on guitar and said forget the drums you should play guitar. He also was a gear head and constantly messing with guitar bodies, necks, pickups which led to some advancements in guitar building not to mention his amp tone known as the "brown sound" that many guitarist tried to replicate later. I went to this show when it hit the bay area, the guy is just amazing.

I recall seeing this 'live' in New Haven video when it first came out (on VHS) and watched it countless times. Still blown away by all of it ... but always get lost during 'Cathedral' (9:14) when he is rolling the volume up and down for each note so there is no attack ... it just sounds like a cello = utterly amazing. I laugh watching young folks watching it for the first time and being stunned by his cig-on-the-guitar trick ... but that was a normal thing 'back in the day'. Thx for posting

Congrats on your 10K Day! Blessed to see this live during their first ever tour in 1978, Oakland, CA. Fell in love with Eddie instantly. We had never heard guitar like that before. Everyone was in shock. By this performance he improved so much and got much more comfortable on stage. Glad you got to see him.

Love your reaction to the best guitar player there ever was (RIP EVH). I saw them back in the 70s and the guy on drums is his brother Alex. The interplay between those 2 - I could just see them as kids out in their garage just shaking the whole neighborhood. Fun fact: Eddie built his own guitar (Northern Ash Stratocaster body, with pickup routing which EVH modified to fit a Gibson PAF) Frankenstrat, or Frankie as he called it.

This solo started out as being a warm up exercise Eddie would do before club gigs or where ever they played. Their debut album,in 1978, a producer had the idea & Eddie agreed to have it as a track for that record. It took only one take.Over time it grew with bits of songs or Eddie experimenting with different sounds, effects. He never played it the same way.Eddie would either add or take away parts. From 1978-2015 all over the world

Once in a lifetime someone so gifted comes along and everyone says of them "they were the best that ever was,".That was Eddie Van Halen. He played a guitar as if it were an orchestra. A guitar god. Another great guitarist for a completely different sound is Sir Brian May. He plays it as an extension of his voice. He plays as if he is singing with his guitar.

Regarding your question about him tapping the strings. Eddie invented and owned 3 patents in the US, 1 of which allows for the string tapping and explained in the below article excerpt: “Patent number 4656917 was granted to Eddie Van Halen in 1987 for a flip-out support device that attaches to the back of the electric guitar or other stringed instrument. This contraption allows the musician to use a tapping technique by playing the guitar in a manner similar to the piano with the face of the guitar facing upward instead of forward. The device gave Van Halen the freedom to create new sounds and techniques that catapulted his band’s success. Eddie Van Halen also holds patent number 388117 for a guitar peghead, a tool that’s designed to help an instrument’s strings hold tension.”
