Mark Lanegan said Layne's voice was so powerful that he could hear it over the instruments, standing on the side of the stage. Tom Morello said he sang like an angry angel. Corey Taylor says he is one of the best voices in all of rock.

@Bacta Work i think the best song for him to listen to first would be Wake Up…. God, Layne’s vocals and the pure emotion he pours out into that song, it’s a completely different feeling than anything i’ve ever heard from Alice In Chains. It gives me chills every single time, and makes me think “how is it even possible to make something this incredibly magnificent?” It’s one of those songs that i personally believe is in dire need of more recognition. First time i heard it, i couldn’t believe what i was listening to and that i hadn’t already heard it. Layne’s vocals, McCready’s guitar work, it is perfection.

Layne was always my fav hard rock vocalist, I always argued him over Kurt, as great as Kurt was, but the main difference to me is Layne was interested in one thing and that was to literally bear his soul with every performance. He wasn't looking for a radio hit or anything except to convey his raw genuine emotion. RIP \M/

But serious, I feel bad for all generations that came after us Gen X'ers, we had the most powerful, real, hauntingly beautiful music. It all went downhill after 1994 it seems. 1st, the dude can sing. No remixing/autotune needed. 2nd, the mix on this live puts the instruments lower, so not only is his voice heard easily, he does not have to force a louder sound to be heard. and the instruments do not drown each other. This is masterful on all parts.

I remember thinking "this might be what tripping feels like" (not quite, but not as far off as you might think). That is still one of my all-time favorite shows. Layne was a legend, and AIC has always been my favorite of the grunge bands. Check out "Don't Follow" for my all-time favorite AIC song; it's somber, wistful, and beautiful - I've always said it reminds me of singing around a campfire. @Christopher Bingham Lane Staley was better ,and I'll tell you why, on a power scale Chris Cornell is probably 11on power, Layne Staley was a 10 on power, but here's the difference, Chris Cornell is either shredding paint off the wall with his voice or he sings really low which is okay he can sing low also, Lane could hit more notes and had more Harmony in his voice on the high on the middle and on the low it's all about the harmony of the song, to prove my point I was at a bar and I was talking with the guy drinking beer and he was a huge fan of the local scene like I was, and he loved all the bands but he said the same thing Chris Cornell, so I bet him 50 bucks we each get to play a half hour of both bands ,and we'll let the bar decide, so obviously he picked all their hits and I played all Alice's hits, guess who the bar voted for, Lane Staley and they said the same thing he just has more Harmony in his voice.

LOVE HATE LOVE live at the Moore December 22, 1990, is LAYNE STALEY in his prime and UNTOUCHABLE PERFECTION. All other bands should strive to have a live performance this perfect. Layne is better live than studio version. One of the very few singers who are better live. Layne wrote the song about his tumultuous relationship with Demri Parrott (pronounced Per-roh). There was cheating on both sides. Listen to the song from the mindset of a sociopath. How many times did Layne come back home from being on tour to find another guy just so smitten-puppy love-tattoo-you-on-my-chest in love with Demri at first sight. But the Demri fans think Layne should have lain down and taken that because he deserved it for screwing groupies on the road? There a few stories of her on the road with him where the first thing she thought of was scoring junk before anything else. I've come to the conclusion that apparently to Demri fans the Layne/Demri relationship is a sacred, hollowed relationship and NO ONE is allowed to side with him against her for what she did to him with the drugs and cheating on him, but he was lower than a snake for what he did to her with the drugs and cheating on her. She was so independent, she DID NOT even want to be recognized as his girlfriend (God-forbid that ever happen). Even though the second he told her he wouldn't get her any more drugs, she just turned around and shacked up with the next guy who would do what she wanted. Her family called Layne back home from GERMANY where he was on tour for a damn intervention with her. Layne never thought interventions worked, but he did it for her. There was one instance where Layne sent her out for coke or something, and she came back with heroin. Hell, it wasn't like Demri was headed for a life in a convent when she met Layne and on the day she was to take her holy orders, Layne corrupted her. She already knew how to get drugs when they met. Layne could have wished upon a star a million times over that she would have married him, but she wasn't going to give up the drugs any more than Layne would have, so there was no way in hell she was marrying him. She had such a feminist independent streak. When they were making the Sea of Sorrow video, the girlfriends were all invited down to participate in the video. Every girlfriend showed up EXCEPT Demri. She didn't even show up to support him let alone be in the video. Discussing the title track "Dirt", Cantrell stated that "the words Layne put to it were so heavy, I've never given him something and not thought it was gonna be the most bad-assed thing I was going to hear." Staley said he wrote the song "to a certain person (Demri) who basically buried my ass". In an interview with the Canadian magazine M.E.A.T. in December 1992, Layne Staley said about the cover: "This album cover... I like to refer to it as "revenge". The woman on the album cover is kinda the portrayal of that person being sucked down into the dirt (laughs), instead of me. The picture is the spitting image of her, and that wasn't even planned. Actually, I was pretty angry about it when I first saw it - she's not happy about it either (laughs). It was real eerie. The girl on the album cover is really Mariah O'Brien NOT Demri. She had two heart surgeries that Layne paid for and two lung surgeries (that Layne also paid for) all stemming from endocarditis that she contracted through intravenous drug use. She passed away on October 28, 1996, from a bacterial infection that was a complication from the last overdose she had. Even though they had broken up for good by 1994, he still loved her and she was still hanging around in 1995 and 1996 before she hooked up with someone else a few months before her death. Demri’s death devastated Layne. A few months later, Layne asked her mother for the teddy bear Demri had with her in the hospital and a few other things. It took another few weeks and an accidental meeting on a busy street to exchange the items. The consensus was that Layne never got over Demri’s death. He used her death as the catalyst to go into a drug-induced tailspin in which he would take his addiction to lengths few could imagine or sustain. (This is coming from a Layne fan who was NEVER a fan of Demri and the many times she strung him along)

This song is from their debut album "Facelift." Personally, it's one of the greatest albums of all-time. This was the first album I bought and listened to all the way through without skipping a song. I also used to sing regularly and would practice to the whole album.

@Christopher Bingham Why did youtube just send me this notification now? Facelift is a proper album. Dirt is, while certainly not "pop music," more poppy in the sense that there are a handful of great songs along with some I just forget about.

@DragonTigerBoss Face-lift is great but its all instantly catchy which can lose it's power after a while. I didn't like Tripod when I first heard it but it's an acquired taste and once you've listened to it enough those songs are incredible. Dirt is somewhere between the two and is my personal favourite along with Jar Of Flies.

Layne Staley was and STILL is my all-time favorite singer and i was 18 in '91 by the way, great fucking memories. Alice In Chains are in my top 5 favorite band ever, i remember seeing the Man In The Box video on tv one day and i went to the record store the very next day to buy the album and i was hooked right away and been a fan ever since. They still do great music with William Duvall on vocals, mixed with Jerry Cantrell it's still Alice In Chains but nothing will beat the Layne years, he was THE BEST!!! Songs to react to by them, album version not the Unplugged show. This is one of my fave performances by Layne. Your first reaction to this, is exactly how you will feel each time to listen to it. IMO and in my own experience. Sludge Factory (From MTV Unplugged) is also a very raw performance by Layne. He makes a tiny lyric slip up and recovered with a witty joke and a stellar, killer version. Now, Layne was also in a band called Mad Season. The live at the Moore, Seattle, 1995 performances of both the songs "River of Deceit" and "Lifeless Dead" are so damn good too. Layne was one of best vocalists around. His talent is greatly missed.

You ask why the live performances sound so good, live? I can say this with all honesty... MOST metal bands are SO MUCH BETTER LIVE!!! I AM MUCH older than you are, but WITH that, I've seen THAT MANY more shows, live. And EVERY SHOW is better live than it is on the Album/cassette/CD, or as you kids say today, on the MP3, or whatever it IS you kids today say... LIVE is THE BEST quality, as far as metal goes, period. Sorry to hear you weren't born yet, but perhaps you were CONCEIVED after, or even DURING one of these shows! :)

I saw Alice In Chains twice and Jerry Cantrell as a solo act back in the 90’s. The first time I saw Alice was great and the second time was not. They were having a horrible night and Layne was pissed off after and addressed the issue on stage thanking the crowd for “coming to band practice “ Sean the drummer at one point fell of his drum throne and shortly after their tour ended and they never toured again. I live in Vegas and Jerry Cantrell will be here soon and Alice In Chains still makes music. If you ever get the chance, see a show!!!!!
