I had full hip replacement 1 year ago and it has turned out great. First 6 weeks were for recovery and I never took 1 pain pill after surgery. Just a couple of plain tylenol each day. Mt back has felt much better since the operation. I have been told that hip replacement surgery is the easiest recovery compared to Knee or shoulder replacement.

Loved watching this! August 2018 age 65 reduced to chronic sciatica and limping around with a cane everywhere, got anterior right hip replacement and a day later felt like a new person. Took doc's advice to rehab gradually. Elliptical machines you can do "all day but no running.". Now i can play tennis again and run for balls even when i want. At 68 I am moving and feeling as good as i did at 30. I also found Bob and Brad in 2018 and their advice and videos helped guide me to the light. Especially enjoyed hearing about how the newer joint replacements used these days might even last me until I'm 115!

I have had hip and shoulder replacement surgeries and it was the best thing I could have done. I could not live with the extreme pain, I had hip replacement at 50 and shoulder replaced at 56 years old. If anyone is in need of replacement surgery do it your quality of life will improve tremendously.

My shoulder replacement surgery was very helpful. I couldn't sleep before it. Now I need my other shoulder replaced but am putting it off for a little while. Eventually I might need both hips replaced too.

Osteoporosis double hip replacement not bilateral the first one was rough,second one was much easier. At 50 now 60 and never looked back. Rehabbed myself with YT Upright health. Great channel to watch like this one.

Had right hip done last June. Left done in October. Anterior approach, Stryker Mako robotic technique. Was hitting tennis balls two-four weeks after each. Swimming five weeks. My primary care doctor made the diagnosis when I saw him for knee pain. Mild swelling in my legs lasted about six weeks after each.

Do not wait too long to do it! My mom waited too long. She had rheumatoid and osteo and it turned into brittle bone over the years. So she finally gave in at 64 years old. But she couldn't bear weight on it. So they took it out and fused the hip which broke and never healed. We lost her four months later from complications. She waited too long because she was afraid of the downtime and recovery pain. Don't be like her. People love you and need you!

"My mom waited too long" Really ? A lot of hip replacements turn out badly. But in the comments here I don´t see them mentioned . Well the way I read Your comment Your mom died in complications from the surgery. Now that is a failed surgery. A surgery includes a reliable plan for post-op recovery.

My surgeon did modified posterior for both mine ( about 8 inch incision) much shorter incision than when I first cared for hip replacements as a nurse in the 80s. But I wanted this particular surgeon because I knew his work!!!! Super low infection rate and his incisions healed beautifully. Don't insist on a certain approach. Find the best most experienced surgeon ! Ask an orthopedic nurse in the hospital you're thinking about getting the surgery in. Recovery is a little bit of a job, but so so worth it for the pain control. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

I've had bilateral hip and bilateral knee replacements and while all were extremely painful, the surgery on my knees was by far the worst! The doc did both KNEES at the same time, so that surgery undoubtedly caused me the worst pain I've ever felt in my life. I had to have the surgeries due to the development of avascular necrosis in all my major joints, due to the 60mg of Prednisone a kidney doc put me while undergoing chemotherapy for my kidneys which were damaged almost immediately by the 2 types of Lupus I was diagnosed with when I was 18. I'm now a stage 5 chronic kidney disease patient. I had the joint replacement surgeries in 2004 & 2005, at the ages of 22 & 23 yrs old. I was told they would most likely only last 10-15 yrs, but so far they're still working well & I have very little pain most days. I also have AVN in both my shoulders & both my elbows and have been putting off those joint replacements since 2004. Unfortunately, I now am waiting on my appt for the surgery on my right shoulder. I'm only 40 yrs old!

Omg I have Vasculitis (kinda similar to lupus) and because of prednisone developed AVN! I had my first hip replaced at age 19 and my second hip at 20. I have AVN in my knees and shoulders, so those may come in the future. I’m 27 now.

I had hip replacement at 48 and the other one at 61 at special surgery in NYC. DR Su. It was called Resurfacing. Pls look into this before doing full replacement. If your bones are strong or if your younger like under 70 yo prob can get it. They cut less bone and you can be very active.

I had my left hip replaced replaced in 2017 was miserable prior to surgery was bone on bone and had a terrible limp. My recover was amazing used a walker for one day only too pain meds the first day home after an over night stay. Right hip replaced in 2021 was done as out patient surgery only took extra strength Tylenol again recovery was amazing. I would recommend anyone in need of relief from hip pain due to osteoarthritis disease it sooner than later! I was 62 at my first surgery 66 for second best thing I ever did!

The ball in my hip dissolved but I had to lose significant weight before I could qualify to have my anterior hr surgery 2 months ago. It was the best thing I could do for myself (both the surgery and the weight loss). Immediately, my hip pain was gone. I have had discomfort in the hip but not the pain. And my surgeon believes that the process of going to physical therapy, rather than having it at your home, significantly aids the healing process. My therapist agrees, based on another patient he is working with that did home therapy and has not progressed as well. And my progress is hampered because I also need a knee replacement and my back is a mess. But my hip is soooooo much better.

This has been an extremely helpful video to me. This surgeon knows how to answer questions in an understandable positive way. When I had a follow up medical visit at 3 months post op I had questions that were only answered with - it may take longer for your recovery... They did not try to explain the reasons for the slower recovery. Resetting muscles and building core strength were not discussed. But from this video I think that is what I am working through. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I can't run, weak ankles. So, I took up Speed Walking!!! Wonderful!!! A person can Speed Walk as fast as a Runner can run - with no hard pounding on any joints in the body!!! I took lessons from a champion Speed Walker in the LA area, in the 8'0s. Sadly Struthers was one of his avid students. They put a video out. I don't know if you can get it on DVD.

Good information! I have found the recovery time is exactly stated. The biggest problem was muscle soreness. My experience so far is regular activities will come in time. I am not speeding up the normal healing process. My hip replacement occurred at 67th age.

My revision surgery was excruciating with extreme pain after surgery when the antibiotic replacement made of cement was temporarily placed in me. I was told by all staff there I should have no more pain than regular surgeries. But with a cement block on raw bone I’d think it would be much higher pain which was for me.

I just found out that I need a hip replacement. Unfortunately, I am over 80 years old, in pretty good shape, trying to work out as much as I can. It came pretty sudden, I am now limping and have used a cane for the past two months. I hope to be scheduled right after Easter but I am a little scared due to the new wave of covid infections. I also wonder if I will have to be in a rehab facility after the surgery. Thank you Bob and Brad for all the good work you are doing for us. God bless you!

I went to an orthopedic surgeon who took X-rays only. He didn’t do a physical exam of my leg. No manipulation or evaluating where or what point I had pain. He was nice, but I feel I should go for a second opinion. Good interview. Thanks!

I had similar experience with short 6 minute consultation xray only. Didn’t get good vibes from that meeting, so kept looking finally found an orthopedic surgeon who sat down with me walk through my MRI and explained exactly what was gonna happen. Answered all my questions without acting like he’s late for lunch and needs to leave. I am getting SuperPATH surgery in a few months which is least invasive THR.

I had anterior hip replacement four weeks ago. Yes, they have you up and walking the same day and send you right home. Have somebody stay with you at least five days, preferably three or four weeks. I’m so thankful I have a loving family that helped me. The only advantage to staying by yourself is you are forced to get up and move. Frankly, my thigh hurt so badly that it felt better to get up and walk. I averaged 1.3 miles inside the house every day. Get off the Tylenol, Ibuprofen, and aspirin as quickly as you can. Ibuprofen and aspirin cause swelling. You aren’t supposed to take them together anyhow. When you stop taking them, the swelling goes way down. Also, my primary care doctor told me not to take aspirin at my age, 63 year old female, because of the risk of a brain bleed. I did take a baby aspirin everyday for three weeks after my hip surgery because of the blood clot risk. Ibuprofen also inhibits healing. The doctor prescribed 800 mg. of Ibuprofen every eight hours and two Tylenol. I only would take the Ibuprofen and one Tylenol. I started getting significantly better when I went to 200 my of Ibuprofen every eight hours and then stopped taking anything. My advice to anyone who is going to have this surgery is to not eat salt. Get a caribiner or mountain climbers heavy duty hook and put it upside down on the front of your walker . You will be surprised what you can hook on that, like a bottle of water, a sack with a few light items in it, a bag of light garbage to carry out. Also, get a sock aid, a reaching tool, diabetic socks because you will be swollen, about three pair of jogging pants with no elastic at the ankles because of swelling, women get some type of “ “boy cut” style underoos. The kind that come a few inches down the thigh and have no elastic on the leg. Hanes makes a kind that cover the wound and bandage. Get a size larger than you normally wear. The bikini cut incision falls close to where your normal lingerie has elastic. I used Dial gold antibacterial soap. I got 4x4 gauze bandages that are supposed to protect against staph and nerds but I was allergic to the tape that I taped it on with. My physical therapist also thought my wound was infected to consulted with the surgeon’s office and they prescribed an antibiotic. I wound up using large bandaid type dressings to cover the wound. Get an electric blanket. The electric blanket helped so much with pain. Yes, it is Summer but I cranked up the air conditioner. Another thing I disagree with is the idea that it’s okay to bend over forwards. Every time I did that I suffered a set back. Another thing that helped immensely was taking a good, very complete, B vitamin complex. My ability to move around increased dramatically and almost immediately by taking this. I also took a full regimen of other vitamins. Do not wear a long gown to bed. It will be difficult, very difficult getting in to and out of bed. It’s been four weeks of absolute hell but I’m beginning to get better. If I didn’t pray a lot and believe in GOD, I don’t think I would have had the strength to pull through. My thigh was so sore and completely numb. I don’t think it’s fair to have somebody jump up and say what an easy time they had of it when the reality is many people are going to experience significant pain. The first day when you are on oxycodeine, yes, you can hop up and walk around like everything is okay. Those of us who abstain from drugs may have to recover in the real painful world. And to those of you who “had no pain at all”, I don’t believe it. And I can take pain. At one point I broke my ankle and leg after being pushed by an abusive man. I wasn’t taken to the hospital for three months. During that time, I only took four Tylenol in total not per day. I was six months pregnant as well. So yes, I can tolerate pain. One of the few happy times was watching you two guys. I had never seen your videos before and you give such great advice in such a funny way!

Thanks for this information. I’m debating on hip anthroscopic surgery. Have mild dysphasia and mild arthritis. I’m very active so the pain is affecting my day to day when I walk or turn, and tendon is snapping. Yet I’m not a candidate for full hip replacement. I’ve been told by several doctors that I’m in the gray area. It’s frustrating to say the least.

I was at that stage about four years ago. My ex-wife said I should have the hip replaced asap before I became deconditioned. I didn't listen to her, of course. Finally got both hips done recently. Turns out she was right. Of course.

You’re surgeon will have to consult with your hematologist and usually have to stop the blood thinner a certain number of days/hours before and after surgery. I, personally, stopped my med and had to do Lovonox (not sure on spelling) shots while in the hospital. It’s a fine line between risk of bleeding too much on blood thinner and not getting a clot being off them. So🤷‍♀️ It depends on your surgeons option of how much you’ll bleed, etc.
