Dublish X you do not have to change your religion to practice the Buddhist system. It is a guide on how to do something, like a Driver's handbook or any instruction manual. No conversion required unless you feel the need for it.

These are my advices for you. * Learn Buddha's basic teaching which you can do within couple of days cause It takes up to 6 months to read Buddha's full teachings(Pāli Canon) * Practise mindfulness which means get rid of the autopilot mood and be aware of the things you do always. Example: imagine we go out for a walk, while walking we think about things we did past, things we are planning to do in future, things we could do in the past and we always loose in thoughts but instead observe the surrounding and try to be in the present. * Practise compassion. help people who need help, share with the needy people. Example: If you have any extra money, instead of buying a burger for you, buy a meal for a homeless. * Turn negative thoughts into positive thoughts and be happy for the things you have instead of craving for the things you don't have. * Cause you said you are not at adult, I recommend you to try a mindfulness meditation at least 20min before you sleep. It will change your life for sure. I always recommend people to try no thoughts meditation where you sit or lay on a comfortable position and stare at the blackness of the eyelids without thinking anything. Thoughts will start to flood in within seconds but you can just let go of your thoughts instead of interacting with those. This will improve your memory and ability to recall your memories when you need them.

Westerners have gotten this really wrong. I'm a sri lankan (a country with pure buddhism) and we practice right teachings. 1. Dukka = is a knowledge of knowing there is suffering. 2. Samuddaya = is a knowledge of knowing what causes suffering which is craving/attachmemnts/wanting things..this is what causing us to suffer when we want something and we dont get it the way we want or we lose it then it causes suffering. 3.Nirodha - is a knowledge of knowing when you remove what causes suffering then there is peace.(nirvana) 4.Magga - a knowledge of knowing what to do to attain nirvana.. once you understood above 3, you already opened up to the 8 folds paths. You already understood 4th one. I explained this very short. These teachings are way too deep than you think. Thanks

In the U.S., Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism are referred to as religions and their temples are registered as places of religion. Buddhism can be considered a religion because it has a doctrine, holy scriptures, clergy, organization, a temple members, teaching of ethics and morality some even Sunday schools. Like the Christian universities in Europe and the U.S. there are many Buddhist universities in Japan (about 30 -50 ) and many in Thailand. Lesser numbers in other Buddhist countries. The best description is that of a non theist religion.

The middle way is not the mixture of two extremes, but a way that is neither of those extremes. Buddhism is also not about controlling your mind, it is about seeing your mind as clearly as possible. So when you can see the things that cause you suffering, you let them go. Because you've seen the complete causal chain of suffering, this wisdom alone will dissolve the arising of problems in the first place. It's not easy, but you can achive a kind of happiness none will ever be able to compromise.

Had to read your comment a couple of times but you made some good points. You must save yourself. Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps You are going to have to use rational thinking. Heaven and hell are not some place you go when you die but rather part of the human condition. Soul though is not a Buddhist term but we can excuse that because you were doing your very best to put things into English. I think we must be careful about claiming to do good deeds because behind each of those deeds lies the ego. Also, claiming that we can comply with just 5 precepts is not that easy.

Now my favorite Buddhist story from Japan. In the 1800's in Japan evidently there was a famine in certain areas of the country. In one part it hit very hard and the crops of most of the farmers failed. One man though was able to raise potatoes. He then took his potatoes around to feed his neighbors. Some short time later a lady to his house and she said she wanted to thank him for the potatoes. His answer "Don't thank me, thank the potatoes"

The older i get the more i understand the point of view of Buddha. I believe that nowadays nobody is really following his path to a meaningful life anymore even if some people will tell you that. We mostly just live to gain thing's that simulate happiness. And i believe that we lose that kind of "real" happiness in our childhood already because we are being taught about rules and norms that are against our true nature. And to end this i would like to tell you my favorite quote: "Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by love; this is the eternal rule."

Buddhism does not ask one to believe in anything. The opposite is the case. Buddhism is the middle path where all fixed / absolutist concepts like hell, heaven, god etc are broken down and questioned. Read Kalama Sutta. Buddhism is also anatman - no soul. Opposite of Hinduism which is atman - permanent soul just like Christianity and Islam. So there is no permanent soul to get reincarnated. It's not reincarnation but rebirth, more like a natural process. Theravada Buddhism is influenced by Hinduism and that's where reincarnation , a flawed concept according to Buddha, has crept in. Read Dr. Ambedkar's free PDF on Buddhism. Buddhism also does not pretend to have answers to everything unlike most religions. Buddha was pointedly silent when meaningless questions were asked.

I keep hearing the word " you" in this video. In other words "I" as something of self reflection. Not really. Most of Buddha's Teachings have nothing to do with faith. That's why, Buddha was basically a Philosopher and a Psychologist. Although Mindfulness is just a part of his Noble Eightfold Path, it has been made an integral part of Modern Psychology. MBCT and MBSR aka Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction are very much rooted in Buddha's Vipassana/Mindfulness. The RIGHT thing to do is to separate the religious parts from the philosophical parts. That's what is known as 'Secular Buddhism', that focuses on only the Naturalistic or Sensible parts of Buddha's teachings. Also, just so you know, most of the Magical Stories in Buddhism are later additions. Theravada and Mahayana are the 2 forms of Buddhism. Theravada is older than Mahayana. It is Mahayana that drifted more and more from the Original Buddha. Anyway, the point is that Buddha's Original Teachings are MOSTLY Sensible and have nothing to do with god or faith or anything ...

Nearly everyone I know is Christian. I left, gladly, as the ugliness behind that particular set of religions made no sense to me. Their indoctrination and fear-mongering could not hold me. I've been called names, damned and told my children will burn in hell. No... being born into something is not a good enough reason to BE anything. I remained 'religionless' for decades (still am, since even the word 'religion' is negative to me and Buddhism is not considered as such) ... Through much research, I found that Buddhism fit my personality, was in parallel to what I was already doing and helps me keep my life rolling in a good direction, giving me the sangha I longed for. I was called to it, it seemed like something I already knew. Though, I believe Buddhism is superior to other religions in almost every way, still, you don't choose it because of someone else's choice.

If you not know that in fact reincarnation/rebirth is indeed the nature process, then it's will be a blockage of your path. Hope you will reconsider this possibility, as the number of evidences for rebirth/reincarnations are going up. @@cariyaputta If you dont believe in reincarnation, just Google search for "Dr Ian Stevenson" and his articles on reincarnation. That will change your mind. Dr Ian Stevenson had done much research on reincarnation particularly on Indians in India. Another point is "never argue with anyone on Buddhist points with others." Everybody has different life experiences which made him believe or not believe on reincarnation. When the time comes, he/she will get confirmation in some way. Thank you for your attention.

This is great! Cani suggest a slight change though? Buddhism at he end of the day is not about meditation, it's about discipline and control over yourself and most importantly AWARENESS AND KNOWLEDGE, and meditation is the main tool used, but not the only one. Its kind of important because meditation alone will not allow you to travel the eightfold path :D

Vanessa Finnegan actually, the Buddha does mention about a "creator god". BUT here's the thing: this "god" just happened to be the first being to appear in this current world-system. So he thought he created the universe and the subsequent beings that appeared after him. By his primacy, he is still a powerful being but by no means a creator deity. But from my observation, it seems that atheists are reacting more (and rightly so) to the people who claim to speak on behalf of "God" than the actual god himself (who frankly is still delusional about his true nature and probably doesn't even bother much about what's going on in this little planet of ours).

The path the Buddha advocated is the letting go of attachment. If you are an ascetic and you are to your asceticism, you will go nowhere. Similarly if you are a hedonist and you are attached to your hedonism you will never be free from the cycle of existence or samsara. When you are free of attachment, you go with the flow created by your past karma. When you are free of attachment, you don't created new karma while you are still being carried along in samsaric flow of your past karma. When you are free of attachment, the obstructions in your mind fall away and transcendental insight/wisdom into the truth of both samsaric and nirvanic reality can arise. It is this transcendental insight/wisdom that will liberate you permanently.

Dawnson Jr. You're right. Islam believes in the Last Day, and Judgement Day. Buddhism on the other hand, doesn't. And, a LOT of other things. Basically, there are a lot of contradictions between them, even in the fundamentals. It's not possible at all to couple these two together and be a devout follower.
