Another good tip for me to store Michael for when I do eventually start building properly, the station looks like it’s coming on very well, cheers from a sunny Exehaven, John

Thanks John! The station is, dare I say it... nearly done! Another couple of sessions and we may be at the end. I’m working on the glazed canopy above the portico at the moment. Then it’s the front canopy and then the little details. And THEN... I’m done. Only have about 4 hours of video footage to edit!

Hi Michael - great tutorial - just the right length - so attention is kept for the whole video. You have a great knack of explaining something using plain simple english. Enjoyed that one. Ah well back to the great helix build for me 😟 cheers Euan

@thegrowler-blackwoodngauge
@thegrowler-blackwoodngauge 3 жыл бұрын
@@Chandwell I most certainly do Michael. The helix is about a third built - not easy as I've had to adapt the kit as it's not millimetre perfect ! I've had to reprofile some of the track bed sections plus I've source larger washers to sit the beds on. The ones supplied would work fine if the guy had cut everything correctly. Good few weeks of work left to finish the build.

Very informative and explained in an easy way that is so encouraging that I've downloaded Inkscape. Just need to find the time and access (my daughter is obsessed with watching You Tube on my PC!) But a quick perusal it seems quite intuitive and not too intimidating.

Thanks Dave. It’s definitely worth giving it a go. The learning curve can be quite steep but if you take it slow and think about simple shapes then it all tends to work out.

Michael, that was just about the most concise and complete explanation on how to lay out a hipped roof I think I've ever seen.. It appears I've been doing it wrong with pyramidal roof shapes all these years by only measuring the slope on the front face of the roof and not on the ends also - no wonder I couldn't get them to work! A really fabulous demonstration and very useful. Thank you for posting and stay well.

Well, I was going to make the school I’m building have a flat roof because I didn’t want to deal with the angles but now I might just give it a hipped roof! I can see this technique working with other styles too like the mansard roof. But next you need to experiment with some Victorian flourishes like convex, concave, and S curves!

Excellent! I am glad I could help. Definitely give it a go. My next building has a part with a mansard roof... so let’s see how that goes!

This is great and stuff like this makes Chandwell the best channel on YT. I’ve been using Inkscape since 2018 for work diagrams but nothing like the work you do Michael. Your videos are a godsend 👍🏼 Just a question about buildings - do you build exactly to the scale of the real thing or tweak things for perspective? I’ve started out in OO and things like Metcalfe kits are massively under scale so they fit on layouts and so they don’t dwarf the trains. I’ve knocked up some scratchbuild card templates and the footprint of the stuff I would do is massive in comparison to the kits. Just wondering how you do things but guessing it’s proper scale looking at how you worked out the measurements for the signal box. Thanks for positing this (and all the videos) up
@Chandwell
@Chandwell Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I tend to make my buildings as close to scale as possible. I think that the Earl Chandfield pub is almost exactly true to scale compared to the Crescent in Ilkley. Most times though I adjust the footprint to fit the gap I have on the layout. I don’t scale down though, I adjust things like numbers of windows, or adjust the widths of the windows slightly, that sort of thing. This leads to some interesting quandaries. Because I base my models on Bradford, and because its Victorian buildings are so simply HUGE anyway, sometimes my buildings seem over scale. When I see other N Gauge layouts at shows, all their buildings are so small and quaint. I worry that I’ve made a mistake in Chandwell. But I have checked and double checked and I think I am right. I discuss this very topic in the video that is coming on Friday this week. Would be interested in your thoughts.
@Captainpubwatch
@Captainpubwatch Жыл бұрын
@@Chandwell Hello Michael and thanks so much for your reply - I’d say you definitely haven’t made a mistake with Chandwell, the buildings make it all look so real. Certainly on film everything works brilliantly and I think this is where your channel is one of the most highly regarded model railway channels on YT. I see exactly what you mean about tweaking buildings, I’m only a beginner but I liked the look of a 1930s shopping parade near my house to build at some time in the future. After doing some measurements (using StreetView and Google Earth - thanks for those tips!) and measuring the footprint it would be very big on the layout, so like you say some windows had to be missed out, some walls looked at etc. I didn’t realise how much thought would go into getting the balance right but the learning curve on this is fascinating. I’ll look out for the Friday video (looking forward to it) as I could watch your videos all day, so interesting and educational, I never knew Inkscape could do so much! Thanks again, Alex
