One thing I'd like to point out: these ships were called the Sevastopol class in Russian documents. I've got a few books in original language that refers to them as such. Just needed to get this out there, since Gangut was the last of the four battleships to be launched and commissioned. Aside from that, great video as always Drach!

Note the more modern looking "clipper" bows and pagoda style superstructures. Big problem with ships that had their turrets spaced between engine rooms was that despite the best efforts, the difference in temperatures of the ammunition meant greater dispersion of salvos. Second problem was the lack of space to add AA guns without interfering with firing arcs. Third problem was where to put fire controls, radar and radio compartments. The Japanese and American navies had the same problem with their prewar designs.

Some trivia; The class is named in honour of the first Russian naval victory at Rilax, but since the Russians didn't know local geography very well and knew it was in the general vicinity of the Hangö peninsula, or to the local Swedish, Hangö Udd, but do some linguistic differences that had arisen in the two Indo-European languages, the Russian pronunciation bore out in the transliteration, and Hangö Udd somehow became Gangut or using a more contemporary transliteration, Khangud.

@Mr. Moon Oh, if only the Nelsons had an extra few thousand tons displacement for engines (A treaty limit of 40,000 tons might have let the KGVs upgrade the twin turret to a quad, too)! I think stretching the hull out behind the tower would greatly improve the appearance of the class by balancing out the proportions. Overall I agree with you about the Nelsons, quite nice looking ships for their atypical layout.

Stock footage of this class is used in the climactic scenes of Sergei Eisenstein's film The Battleship Potemkin. The still at 2:39 is similar to one of the shots used in the movie. Of course that's anachronistic, since the mutiny on the Potemkin happened in 1905.

First, the Octtober Revolution was in November 1917, and the Peace of Brest-Litovsk was signed in March 1918. So, the mutiny in March 1917 could have nothing to do with those two events. You probably meant March of 1918. Second, you forgot to mention that only time a ship of Gangut class engaged in a sea battle was a scirmish with British ships in Baltic in 1919.

I would like to explain the naming a little bit: Gangut was named after Battle of Gangut in 1714 where Peter the Great galleys cornered and defeated Swedish Fleet. Sevastopol was renamed to "Parizhskaya Kommuna" (Paris Commune) - a socialist government which ruled Paris in 1871. Petropavlosk was renamed to "Marat" - after Jean-Paul Marat, one of the politicians during the French Revolution. He was the guy who managed to get stabbed in the bath... Poltava was renamed to Frunze - after Mikhail Frunze, one of bolsheviks military leaders

The only thing worse than a ship named after a guy who got stabbed in the bath tub would be a bath bomb named after him. I appreciate your lowered volume on the intro and outro. I need videos to fall asleep (yes, have to rewatch several times to get the whole thing in), and had to take yours out of the rotation because of the noise. Thanks.

Are you saying Vickers wasn't able to sell some guns to someone for once?? Goodness !!!!! I can look at a Gangut class and just know its Russian. Its lines are so distinctive. I'm curious what an American yard could have done for the Russians when it comes to building battleships. "Well....Soviets" could be used to explain alot of things.
