Now Open… Hiroshige’s 100 Famous Views Of Edo (feat. Takashi Murakami).
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was a Japanese artist and, to this day, is considered to be the last great master of traditional woodblock print-making.
The artist’s series of 118 prints depicting scenes of Edo (modern-day Tokyo), are never displayed individually at the Brooklyn Museum. Meaning these hidden treasures from our collection are now on view for the first time in over 20 years!
Also on view, but for the first time ever, are new paintings by Japanese contemporary artist, Takashi Murakami. These new works pay homage to Hiroshige’s designs, and upon closer inspection, contain signature Murakami details.
