Basically, HBO purchased the international rights to this BBC programme 2 months before filming wrapped and everyone thinks HBO did everything. Too many times American streaming services are getting far too much credit for UK work just by buying the international broadcast rights. This is NOT a HBO show

Yup. It annoys me, as the BBC spent a FORTUNE and 3 years making this with Bad Wolf in Wales just for HBO to swoop in at the 11th hour and take all the credit. Not to underplay the amount of money HBO spent on the rights - a good few Million, no doubt - but it was largely money that BBC Studios had already committed to.

Chris Wendt well since HBO only bought the rights to broadcast the show after it was all filmed, it really isn’t aimed at an American audience. I don’t know how religious America generally is, but the BBC probably won’t be pulling their punches when it comes to religion for a TV show, Britain isn’t all that bothered any more.

I didn't finish the second one nor did I ever get to the third book. Unfortunately, I don't have the books anymore so I'm going to have hunt them down and start reading them again. Hopefully I can actually get through the whole series before next year! LOL!!

AVClarke That was the problem with the Golden Compass; it was treated like a kid’s film that ignored the rest of the series. And the rest of the series was too dark to fit with the first film; so they really couldn’t continue with sequels that would do justice to the books.

@GestahlianChocobot TWoT deals with themes of Destiny, Choice, Good & Evil, Morality, Sacrifice, religion, politics, gender roles, societal imbalance, racism etc., the climax involves the lead literally ascending into godhood, it’s told across 11,300 pages with close to 2,000 named characters and 14 books (excluding the prequel novel) that spanned two authors across 23 years. Philip Pullman’s main series spans 3 YA books and 1,250 pages, so it’s really incomparable to the scope and size of the story that WoT tells.

@Kathy Kat Don't know. The first book (of the second trilogy) is a prequel and starts when Lyra is a baby. The second book is a sequel... Lyra is 20. So fitting the second trilogy in is going to be difficult. I'd like to see how they deal with the Subtle Knife. Going between worlds is going to cost production a ton :)

This Philip Pullmans Trilogy is a Masterpiece, presented has Children's books but with so much hidden between the lines. I read it a long time ago, and i was amazed with all the philosophical questions in it. a Magical world that exposes Magic itself. I hope that this series makes justice to the great history, not like the previous movie that was horrendous....

The magisterium is a stand in for catholic Church, by the end of the book Lyra who is sort of an stand in for 'Eve' commits the 'original sin' there by forsaking her innocence and embracing experience and in the process saves the world.

The series world-building and effects look about 10 times better than the previous movie's iteration. It's a darker, more detailed, more accurate representation of the original words that were on the pages of the novel. I'm genuinely excited to czech this sh!t out, y'all!

This looks like an adaptation of The Golden Compass. Edit: I did a little reading after posting this comment and I was right, hehe. I saw the film titled "The Golden Compass" several years back, but didn't know it was based off of a book trilogy (His Dark Materials). I'm definitely going to watch this series because I found the story in The Golden Compass interesting and wondered why it never got a sequel since it ended so abruptly.

For fans of the book, the ending was probably the most disappointing part of the movie. It literally ends before the climax of the book, and even if you haven't read it you can totally tell something's off. Definitely recommend reading them if you get a chance!

One thing I don't like about this trailer, the woman saying don't hurt "me" . The animals are a you, your soul, but also a separate being, your best friend, someone to talk to. So she should say "us", small thing but otherwise it looks really good ^^

As a person originally from France, I watched the original movie (translated in french), and it was absolutely ridiculous... Not only the plot seamed weird, but the voice over were a disaster. Then I read the books a year later. It shocked to observe how far off track the movie was! I'm about to start watching this- hopefully, it won't be as bad as their first attempt to display this amazing storyline on screen. Wish me luck..

They dont even show it in season 1 lord azriel opens the portal to the dust city by cutting billy from his daemon and thats how the show ends theres only 8 episodes and its not coming back til 2021 so you just got played
