I think the beast was a skin walker or devil and it wasn't his brother he killed but it was the beast an the reason his brother wont look ate him is because he can believe his brother would try and fail to kill him.

what if the younger brother lied of a story about a beast? i mean its funny how they mention the brother's animals being killed, and that he is jealous of his more successful brother too...maybe he did it for attention or the potential of getting attention. Why else would he wanted to originally go ALONE to kill the beast, when we saw in the next panels, he hid afraid. Like his older brother wasn't meant to come along.

that is a good theory, we could be dealing with an "unreliable narrator," it makes it difficult to know how much of it really happened, if anything at all.

I don’t understand the ending, what was the red faced creature in the pit? Did he kill his brother or not? If he didn’t what was the thing pretending to be his brother?

A lot of it comes down to interpretation. He killed his brother or the creature, but it ended without a resolution. the creature is also left unresolved, but a lot of people seem to think it's a demon or shapeshifter kind of creature.
