Would you believe I've been sitting on this particular comic dub since 2011? I kept meaning to do it every Halloween, but once it came around I either forgot about it or I most definitely remembered it and was crushed by the weight of the skill and work that would have been involved in bringing it to life in a proper, PERFECT manner.
So I kept puting it off and putting it OFF and finally it was five years later and I was still not at a level that I felt was PERFECT to do this comic dub. So I decided to do it anyway. Finally getting rid of this albatross from around my neck. That's a saying right? Albatrosses and them being tied to necks?
I had a specific vision of how this comic dub was going to be done in my mind; first of all: no music, just diegetic sound with some non-diegetic elements for the SPOOOOKY factor. Second: take advantage of the use of panels and their layout to create a dynamic and hopefully slightly unsettling, alien space. Third: all the mouth talking bits were going to be done by me and I was going to better than amazing, I was going to be PERFECT.
So like. One out of three ain't bad. Ha.
Honestly though, I think this has come out as well as I can make it at this point in my life with my available skills. Some things came out a little better (and even easier) than I expected and other things just came out just kinda... not nearly as amazing as I hoped it would have been in my mind. But isn't that the way with most things?
Anyway, this particular albatross has been loosened from my neck (no seriously, IS that a saying? I'd google it, but I'm too busy being famous and handsome to do that) - now I gotta offload these OTHER albatrosses that have been hanging around for way too long. Perhaps you'll see the fruits of that labor in the future!

So, a Doppelganger (shapeshifting demon) was living in a hole in the ground in the forest he saw a dead body being dumped in his hole and he saw the golden opportunity: "become the guy who just got killed and return to the village so the villagers will think nothing's wrong" Also, he wasn't lying when he talked to the brother: *"Me! Living beside those woods all my life!"* *"Thank God for my brother"* *"Thank God he killed (that poor) devil"* He *DID* lived next to the woods all his life until the younger brother gave him the chance to become his dead elder brother and he is *THANKING* him for that. Also, he probably got used to sleeping in a hole than in a bed...

Except, the one who came back, was infact his brother. The shapeshifting demon took advantage of the real brother getting lost by chasing it, and turned into a fake brother. The man killed the demon. Threw it in the hole, and got all the thanks. Then, his brother came back, like it was nothing. Everybody has a good ending, and the man got out of it even better than expected! Great ending, right? No, it's not. The man feels extremely guilty. When he was in the woods, he did kill the beast. But at the time, he thought it was his actual brother. He actually did intend to kill his brother, a thought that can't be forgiven. He wanted to KILL his brother, that's simply not acceptable. When he sees his brother digging at night, it's a dream. He says that he has dreams now. When he thinks that his brother doesn't look at him, that's also all in his head. When he goes back to the hole, we see that the beast is still alive. But in reality, he just went there to kill his self. Thus, putting himself at the same "level" as the beast.

@@Textopthatoneawkwardperson what do you mean "at the same level as the beast" And yeah, it could be either one, but I'm kind of leaning to this theory more since I think the bro is actually guilty for leaving his bro alone to fight the monster, hence not looking at the MC. Also, explains why the coat is in perfect condition. A doppleganger of the brother's corpse would probably copy the torn jacket too. It is is very possible that the MC is paranoid and hallucinating, since he fears retribution from his brother. One can argue that maybe his brother DOES know the MC tried to kill him and is planning revenge, hence why digging the hole, but more likely the MC is paranoid and only seing what he wants to see. His brother is just digging a hole... It is very possible that the MC is about to be killed too at the end.

Theory time! He actually did kill his brother, but.. His brother survived it all. The gunshot, the fall, everything. It was not the brother that came from the woods that day; it was his guilt. His brother, thanking him, not looking at him, was just his own mind, reminding him of what he'd done. He saw his brother digging. That was his guilt, telling him to check up on the hole. He goes inside. His brother (not the 'guilt vision' one- notice his coat is torn) is still alive. He looks at him.

Oh god, I remember reading this a few years back. It terrified me then, and it still terrifies me now, even more so with the brilliant voice acting, sound effects, and editing. And damn, that last panel... The breathing and the fact that you left out the part where he turns to look at the brother just makes it so much more uncomfortable. Amazing job!

​ @It’s Magic so everyone's theories are: a shapeshifter came instead of the brother / the shapeshifter was the one killed and the brother returned, etc. But what if all along his brother was that beast or who knows if he's really his real brother. Some things: The brother is that beast that's been haunting the town and he knew someone would eventually go hunt it, and he'd go with him, And get the credit for killing "the beast", then once "the beast"(wolf) is dead, he can stop the killings. Another thing: the one he attackted and the one who returned are the same one. Why? "his face all red" before throwing him into the hole and when the returned brother dug the hole, we can see at the end his face is red [This is missing the last photo].

Two Brothers enter, and one Beast lurks, two are left behind; the Beast one the ground and the 2nd Brother dead, which makes 1/3 left, then 1 join which makes 2/3, it was never confirmed if the "Wolf" Beast was dead so that's why I think the False 2nd Brother is actually the "Wolf" and that's why he said 'Thank god he killed that poor devil!' to 1st Brother As for the hole the Beast was probably hiding in there for all his life hence "Living beside those woods all my life" living in a hole for so long he has grown accustomed to the cold damp environment and that's why he dug a hold each night

the thing that makes me believe the "the shapeshifter was the one he killed" theory is the beastly eyes the dead brother has, even before the last panel. but the digging and "why won't he turn to look at me?" bit kinda messes with that, although you could theorize that the digging was a dream and the other thing is equally all in his MC's head. but that's going more heavily on speculation.

My interpretation is that the second "brother" is actually the real beast. It's not a wolf like they believed, but a doppelganger that resided in the hole and when the protagonist dumped his brother's corpse down there, it took his form and started living his life. The protagonist can't expose the doppelganger because he'd have to confess to killing his brother. The hole the doppelganger was digging could have been for the protagonist or a different means of propagating its cycle. Whoever falls down the hole, the doppelganger can assume their form. Of course, the brother doesn't appear to be as dead as we thought in the end. Perhaps his soul can't rest so long as the doppelganger is using his form, but it's hard to say. But I can say with confidence that the "fake" is a doppelganger, the brother's conscience made him return to the hole, and that it's a mix of guilt and an outside force at play.

I'm usually not one for stories with as much intentional ambiguity as this, but something about how Emily Carroll writes makes it work for me. And the particular way the frames were timed and edited for this, it perfectly brings that to life, it's inspired.

One thing that has always bugged me about this story: Why did the hole smell of lilac? His brother owned a lilac bush. So why did the hole smell of lilac before he killed his brother and dumped his body there?

Well idk if this relates to the story, but Lilacs apparently represent purity, innocence, and spirituality, which wouldn’t make sense since if were associating both the brother and Doppelgänger with the lilacs… only one is innocent, unless… the hole in the woods smelled like lilacs but the Brother had a bush of lilacs, so I guess it might just be symbolism. Like the Bush of lilac itself(a physical object) represents the brother, the real brother, and the smell(just a smell, not an actual bush) of lilac represents the doppelgänger, the false brother? Maybe? Idk.

some theory goes that he put the is lilac there because Lilacs used to cover up a bad scent, often used for funerals. Maybe the guy planned the murder to happen and dug the hole there and prepared the lilacs to cover up the scent. Maybe some spirit or monster saw him digging in the woods alone at night so when he posed as his brother, he sees him digging too. or his conscience did that, reminding him of how he dug for his brother's burial hole.

My interpretation for the the protagonist saying this line "..comes in from the woods, (as most strange things do) perhaps is referring to the doppelganger brother same as the beast which kills the livestocks in their village. I came up with this perspective as checking closely at the drawings, where the hole came up three times - the first where he killed his brother, the second one where he saw his brother digging a hole and third one where he went down back the hole to check on his brother. It is worth noting that the author perhaps wanted us to point out which hole is it as there were trees on the first and last scene where the hole scene is present except only in the second scene where the brother is seen digging but no trees behind it. So my speculation for this line is, the strange thing that came in from the woods was not his real brother but a shapeshifter doppelganger. When he went back the hole and went down to check on his brother, he found out that his actual brother is still alive. Now the protagonist has a moral dilemma on what he should do. Either to lose his face by rescuing his actual brother and expose the doppelganger or kill his brother again, make up a story which will also expose the doppelganger.

ANOTHER THEORY! HIS BROTHER *IS* THE BEAST. THE BROTHER DUG UP THAT HOLE, TO KILL, AND PUT IN, THE MAIN CHARACTER. (It smelled of Lilac, and the brother had a lilac bush.) But he killed his brother out of spite first. The brither that came BACK was all in his head. Guilt, that maybe the brother could've survived, so he went to check on him. He came down in the hole. Right where the beast wanted him to be.

Holy everloving frick, this was so good. We're supposed to make a sequel for this in English class, but my teacher always paused at the credits(Where it says who voice acted. Great job, btw) so I never saw the very end and WOW I'm terrified. what with the sounds, acting, and everything else, this was amazing. I think it's interesting that the only character we know did something "monstrous" is the main character. He killed his brother. When his brother comes out of the woods (as most strange things do) he never does anything violent or evil. So, is he a monster? Even if he is a copy or a skinwalker? I think the real monster is the main character - he murders his brother and feels no guilt. He sleeps well at night. It isn't until the copy comes out of the woods that he feels anything. I don't know what the lilac-smelling hole and the dead brother turning to look at him are supposed to tell us, but I don't think it really matters to the true meaning of the story. And great job with the video version. My middle school students are obsessed!

I think that in the woods the brother actaully did kill the beast and then its spirit took over the the mc hiding and so he killed his real brother and dragged him in the hole so that he could get all of the fame as the beast. Then the mc outside the beast noticed something was wrong and that is when the beasts spirit left because he noticed the brother came back and took over the brother, gaining fame again, but then when the beast was digging because of guilt he put the dead body in there instead. And there was two bodys because the day before the brother came back he left the mcs body because of guilt and went and resurrected himself. And the brother was the beast at first but then the beast left and put him down there. I just think that the beast really wanted the fame and publicity, so he switched in the mcs, then noticed that he'd gain more if he were the brother, and switched to the brother, and then felt gulit and dumped the brothers real dead body in the hole.

what if the younger brother lied of a story about a beast? i mean its funny how they mention the brother's animals being killed, and that he is jealous of his more successful brother too...maybe he did it for attention or the potential of getting attention. Why else would he wanted to originally go ALONE to kill the beast, when we saw in the next panels, he hid afraid. Like his older brother wasn't meant to come along.

The voice acting can be misleading. When the 'brother' talks they give him a sort of demonic/distorted voice, as if it's not his brother and is instead a devilish fiend or monster. This can be misleading. In the original comic there obviously isn't a voice to imply this.

I think it was the brother's ghost that returned from the woods. Sure, that's probably the most common answer. But I feel it makes the most sense. It's just the part where the brother's bloody body finally turns to look at the protagonist that makes me think this. He would never turn to face the protagonist until he returned to confront his deed.
