I am writing this comment in Aug 2021, when my country is suffering thousand of death due to Covid-19. Million people in the world are under harsh situation. The concept that Karmapa has given of being aware of happiness in each every breath means a lot to human being in the Earth now. Perhaps we had never paid enough attention that ones could loose their freedom forever in seconds. I would thank you everyone for all you have done and I am sorry that I have also not sincerely paid good enough attention on your information.

Maybe some of you wonder what is so special about Karmapa and his speech that deserves standing ovation in the end. Well, you will not find it in his words, there are many more talented speakers and brighter ideas than compassion. Important is what Karmapa represents. He might said nothing at all and stil he would have been applauded. Because this man represents the beautiful being which is in everyone of us. He is the beautiful being, by status. And he carries this quality through centuries.

I don't know why people don't like this talk. The message I got was sometimes we are more interested in profit and growth that we forget to care about others. While profit and growth aren't necesarily bad, they aren't the whole picture and ignoring the rest will not get us where we want to go.

I was particularly moved by the positive interpretation of the destruction of the Buddhas by muslims. Normally we would think that they would be offended by what happend, which would further detereorate relations between two peoples. What a cool positive Buddhist way of looking at things! Reminds me of 'Offer the other cheek!'

I liked his ability to compare the destruction of Budas in Afghanistan to the destruction of the Berlin wall. Rather than an insult it was necessary to remove these for communication. I don't know if this lead to more communication, but I liked the twist in perspective.

To all those who are complaining about this vid... maybe you don't know who the karmapa is, but he happens to be a revered lama that many people around the world listen to intently. Yea, perhaps its not exactly a riveting talk, Just cause he's not talking about a subject that you're interested doesn't mean you can slate him. Listening to different ideas, Isn't that what TED is all about? cheers.

@SAsgarters it depends how you define "religion". My perspective is that Buddhism is a set of practices and ideas designed to help you live in alignment with the principles of truth, love and compassion. Much like a good self help or personal development book it helps you understand yourself and the world around you better, not through telling you what to believe, giving you rules to live by or through mythical tales... but rather by encouraging introspection and critical thinking.

I remember when the Dalai Lama came to Ottawa. It was great! The funniest part was when the Dalai Lama was trying to find the correct translation for a puppy at it's mother's breast (something to do with natural instinct to nourish... I forget) and he could not think of the right word. So he asked his translator to describe it and he just simple said "the uh..nipple" and everybody laughed! Good times!

This man didn't say anything I found particularly offensive. Other than the moment where he suggested that in developing our "outward" selves we shouldn't forget our "inward" development... as if the two are some how antithetical or diametrically opposed to one another... In that if you develop one you somehow risk unbalancing the other. I did find that offensive and patronising.

@GargantuanLifeform99 "Sounds like a great location for retreat." It was on the aptly named Holy Island (it used to be home to an early British Christian hermit) - in the Firth of Clyde. The Buddhists bought the island about 20 years ago. I made a short film about it a few years ago - it wasn't a great success as they were on a long silent retreat as well when I filmed! Not many interviews!

HIS HOLINESS is a title that Vajrayana Buddhism uses (in English translation) for the head of lineage or a very accomplished meditation practitioner - these people demonstrate accomplishment by clearly displaying compassion and wisdom. It is given from others. Buddhism is an experience-based tradition, not faith based, so criticizing it for being "religious" because you don't like christianity is simply ignorant. At what point in this talk does he say something anything "religious"?
