Meet John. He used build wooden boats and for the last 20 years he has been living on wooden boats. Now, aged 71, he wanted something a little bit more comfortable than his 30 foot wanderer. Lets have a look at what he calls his last boat.
I hope you liked hearing John’s story. If you did, please give the video a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel.

I met Daniel Bombigher, the designer and this man's opinion about him is is pretty good. He was a serious excentric , passionate about his schooners, uncompromising and creative. The building manuals were published in France and were a delight to read.

I sailed and raced for over 50 years and loved every day on the water. But when I hit 70+ years the maintenance just became a pain rather than a passion. Cheers to you dear sir...may you always enjoy a brisk breeze on the beam...

Wooden boats just ooze character.. I lived on one for 21/2 years, late 60s, early 70s and loved every day of it.. even the tough ones..after a lifetime of owning fiberglass boats, 18 months ago I was tempted into buying another wooden boat, excellent survey, 48ft, the nightmare began ! Unfortunately, unless you're fortunate enough to not have to concern yourself about maintenance costs then you need to be a boatbuilder ! Well done John.. I hope the project goes well, enjoy the cruising/racing.

Ahoooy , thank you for a nice story, I hope we will meet somewhere in the south of Europe a finished boat with this nice gentleman sailor... We live on a wooden Colin Archer 38ft from Kristiansand made of pine in 1978, I am not a craftsman, I learned everything from the old Norwegian sailors, but I have to say, I think that putting epoxy on a wooden boat is the fastest way for the boat to rot from the inside...hundreds of years have confirmed that only turpentine and linseed oil are the right things for the hull of the boat inside... Anyway, good luck with project and keep on posting cool stuf Jessica :)

I am in the position. When my employer died not being able to get his dream boat finished, I decided it was time. Bought a 35 foot Lord Nelson in distress and went to work. The boat is a wonder and I'm very happy. There is only so many places a man can set. When I die, I want this fine vessel to be my Viking Funeral.

New upholstery will look great. Personally I'd go for a dark red upholstery fabric rather than leather, get new top Q foam as well, firm for base and medium for backs, with piping in a self colour dark red, as light piping will get dirty.

Wood is the only way to go, especially when you glue them together with the epoxy west system, & cover the bottom with copper plates. I also prefer modern rigging with bronze winches. I love the wood mast.

A 70footer is quite comfortable to live onboard and i pray he adds a bow thruster being a single screw full keel just for maneuvers docking and undocking from his berth . Luv the mast and the wood work period 👍 I had to watch again to catch his last name but I still don't find his wooden boats anywhere . Or is he simpley a shiprite ? Still luv the wooden boat and totally agree with glossing her bottom 👍

Sheathing is great, but what about under the keel where she sits on the the blocks? so jack up remove blocks, glass it, but then the boat sits on the glass/woven rovings and crushes those layers. Any thoughts?

Was he the owner of THE Eric Hiscock's Wanderer ? Now of course Waderer is a pretty common name for boats, as E. H. himself found out when he registered his first Wanderer back in the 20's !… This boat is called a schprountz that was designed by a crazy frenchman who designed several sizes of this type of cruisers. The designer Bobinger (or a name to that effect…) and he took his inspiration from the schooners from the bay of Baltimore … A few of them were built by their owners… It was not regarded as very interesting by the sailing community in the 80s. Mainly because to much was for show (such as the oval barrel used to to have gravity feed running water below, a totally useless feature). And also because the fashion of schooners faded at that time, the more so that it is not such an efficient sailing plan. Like all schooners it was excellent running downwind, and as the boat is really heavy it needs some wind to run at an acceptable speed. Otherwise it is quite comfortable.

I especially like the hole in the skeg and cut away in the rudder. Details such as that speak of forethought and fine building. The keg on deck is easily staved by any woodwright worth his salt. The keg is a nice touch.

@@michaelmcilrath9466 he's going to dry it out. Timbers will shrink. Fastners will get loose. Then any fresh water that gets in the boat doesn't get counterd by sea water so it's going to help rot. You did a terrible job of showing the interior of the yacht. When you go, go prepared. You should have had an auxiliary light for the dark places. The head in particular. You mentioned something to the left of the heater and lower down but you never focused the camera on it. The main thing you did was to focus the camera on him. Hopefully you will have done a better job on other videos. If not, I definitely won't be watching anymore of your's.
