A thorough examination of Sarah Everard's killer, Wayne Couzens, has brought to light significant deficiencies in police vetting and recruitment procedures.
The investigation underscores the necessity for a complete overhaul to avert similar occurrences. Wayne Couzens, a former police officer, committed the heinous acts of abducting, raping, and murdering Ms. Everard while off duty in March 2021.
The inquiry exposed a pattern of neglect in recognising signs of Couzens' unsuitability for the role throughout his nearly two-decade-long policing career. Disturbingly, at least five incidents, including a serious sexual assault on a child before joining the police force, went unreported.
Lady Elish Angiolini, the lead lawyer in the inquiry, raised concerns about potential additional victims and stressed the pressing need for substantial changes to prevent the recurrence of cases like Couzens.
