Tony Hadley, the lead singer, was only 23 years old when this was recorded. Such a mature vocal. Spandau Ballet peaked way too early. "Only When You Leave" should be your next Spandeau Ballet reaction.

For me, Spandau Ballet's best song that showcased Tony's vocal range and talent was "Through the Barricades." It's a very emotional song, about two young lovers , one from Northern Ireland, and one from Ireland , that had to meet and love each other sneaking through the warzone. Part of the chorus, " And we made our love on wasteland and through the barricades ." It's a very powerful song, heart wrenching, but at the end with some hope, as they signed a peace deal when they were writing the song, so he was hopeful things would work out and The Troubles would end.

I've talked to Tony Hadley several times, he's a great man, very pleasant to talk to. He comes often to Italy, he loves my country (and especially our food!). By the way his band has had an enormous success here in Italy in the '80s. His was one of the best voices I've ever heard in a pop group.

"Gold" always felt like a James Bond theme to me. Spandau Ballet was huge all over the world, but in the US, Duran Duran was the breakout band, they had far more hits in the US. Tony Hadley= amazing voice, even to this day. "True" was actually more chill than most of their music. "Only When You Leave" is another great showcase for Tony Hadley's voice.

Really glad Spandau Ballet got another look. Most reactors listen to "True" and that's it. "Gold" is an anthem. Tony Hadley has a foghorn of a voice. Others songs to checkout: Only When You Leave, Highly Strung, Be Free With Your Love, I'll Fly For You. Or if interested in their earlier New Romantic era: Glow, Paint Me Down, The Freeze, Chant no.1, Coffee Club.

spandau was part of the 'new romantic' movement which included OMD, Japan and Duran Duran. it was mainly about style over substance but all 4 bands knocked it out of the park with only Duran having north american success. OMD has so many great tunes...souvenir, dreaming, maid of orleans, electricity, if you leave. Japan was more 'art rock'. quiet life, life in tokyo, the art of parties, ghosts. definitely a rabbit hole to dive into!
@PjRjHj
@PjRjHj Жыл бұрын
Japan were musically head and shoulders above the other "New Romantic" associated bands. All members were super talents who found their unique voicing on their instruments at a young age (in particularly Mick Karn and Steve Jansen). The hard part of Japan is picking the most accessible song for the new listen. I'd probably say Quiet Life, Methods of Dance, or Art of Parties

One of my favorites. 🙂 The gold girl is a nod to a James Bond movie titled "Goldfinger". I suggest one of my favorite groups from the 80s, *ABC* . The lead singer of that group, Martin Fry has a nice and unique voice, at least to me. "The Look of Love" "Poison Arrow" (nice saxophone action) "When Smokey Sings" (a nod to Smokey Robinson) --- More suggestions.... *Swing Out Sister* (female lead vocals... formally a trio of two men and one woman, but now a duet of one man and one woman with an amazing backing band) "Breakout" "Butterfly" "Twilight World" "Now You're Not Here" "Who's Been Sleeping?" "Waiting Game" "Notgonnachange" (one word as typed) "Blue Mood" "Am I the Same Girl?" (first by Barbara Acklin in 1968, and also as an instrumental in the same year, titled "Soulful Strut" by Young-Holt Unlimited)

Please do their "Through The Barricades" - a great backstory and the group's final Top 10 hit in Europe. A song about love prevailing throughout the violence and sectarianism of the Troubles, the song was inspired by the murder of Thomas Reilly, who had worked for the band, by a British soldier in Belfast during the Troubles on 9 August 1983. Powerful vocals again from Tony Hadley, along with great acoustic guitar work, and a haunting snare drum part near the end.

Great choice! Spandau Ballet, sadly, only had three top 40 hits in the US... this, "True", and a third that you haven't done, "Only When You Leave". They also had bit hits in the UK with "Chant #1", "To Cut a Long Story Short", "Lifeline", "I'll Fly For You", and "Through the Barricades".

So, Everything was already said about Tony Hadley's phenomenal voice, but it's worth mentioning the sheer musical excellence of the entire band. In this great song, Steve Norman who is Spandau Ballet's sax player(and he's a really good sax player) is also playing the Bongos (the hand drum Jay mentioned).

Yes indeed, his voice! Tony Hadley (lead singer) can still belt em out. The two guitarists are brothers Martin & Gary Kemp who, back in 1990 played the part of "The Krays". A true story of the gangster brothers Reggie & Ronnie Kray, from the Eastend of London in the 50s & 60s. Its a great movie, but very gory & brutal.

i do remember that movie and always felt it was very underrated because it came out the same time as other mobster films, but the strength of The Krays was in the characters of the mother and her sister (also the wife of one of the twins)

@@stpaley yes, you're right there. The mum and the Aunt were played brilliantly by 2 wonderful actors Billie Whitelaw (Mum) & Susan Fleetwood ( Aunty Rose). Susan sadly passed of leukemia in 1995 aged just 51years old. She was in fact the sister of Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac).

Fun facts: The model in the video is Sadie Frost, who was a teenager back in 1982 when the video was made. Many years later, she met Spandau Ballet' guitarist and songwriter Gary Kemp again, fell in love, married and had a son. Sadie went on to star as Lucy in Bram Stroker's Dracula. Sadie then left Gary for Jude Law, who she married and had three kids with. So next Spandau Ballet song: "Lifeline" please!

Spandau`s lead singer Tony Hadley has one of the best voices in pop,there are two brothers in the band,Martin and Gary Kemp,Gary is the songwriter who penned virtually all of the bands hit records and along with his brother also have had fairly decent acting careers too,Gary starred in the film "The Bodygaurd" as Whitney Houstons English manager along with Kevin Costner. Spandau have had many hit records in the UK especially and one I particularly like is "To cut a long story short",which is a superb single!

Spandau Ballet is one of those groups that has very underrated music. Everyone remembers the song “True” but this one I will admit to my shame I forgot about! Lol! This one was very good as well. On a sidenote whenever you go back to the R&B side, can I give you another unsung person? Check out a guy named Christopher Walker, particularly the song “giving you all my love.“ He had one of those rich voices that should’ve gotten more attention than he did. Same with Christopher Williams as well. as for 80s bands, check out Wang Chung “dance Hall days” if you haven’t already. Also, Bananarama‘s “Tarzan boy.“
