This is actually a cover of a wonderful 1972 song by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. You should check it out when you get a chance. Not that I'm knocking this version, not at all. Mick Hucknall's vocals are amazing, as they are on most Simply Red tracks. For your next one, you can do "Money's Too Tight (To Mention), "The Right Thing", or "It's Only Love". Thanks for reacting!

Simply Red are a British soul and pop band formed in Manchester in 1985. The lead vocalist of the band is singer and songwriter Mick Hucknall, who, by the time the band initially disbanded in 2010, was the only original member left. Since the release of their debut studio album Picture Book (1985), they have had ten songs reach top 10 in the UK Singles Chart, including "Holding Back the Years" and "If You Don't Know Me by Now", both of which reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. They have had five number one albums in the UK, with their 1991 album, Stars, being one of the best-selling albums in UK chart history. At the 1992 and 1993 Brit Awards, they received the award for Best British Group. They received three Grammy Award nominations: for Best New Artist in 1987, and "Holding Back the Years" and "If You Don't Know Me by Now" for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. The band re-formed in 2015. Simply Red have sold over 50 million albums. Peace out.

I agree, Linzi! He's the real deal live. He's got the pipes, without any mechanical help to hit and hold the notes while putting plenty of color into his vocals. So many vocalists that became hits in the 80's turn out to be disappointments live. They resort to auto tune a lot, or they end up sounded winded and unable to hold a not long, and definitely incapable of hitting those high notes on the recording.

Simply Red are an amazing band that you need to check out more of. They are from Manchester, England and lead singer Mick Hucknall is a big Manchester United fan, the Red Devils, and of course Mick having read hair the band had to be called Simply Red. If you get the chance you would see if you can find a video of them performing with the Buena Vista Social Club band, I remember seeing them on TV years ago and it blew my mind. As for the next Simply Red songs I'd suggest Stars or For Your Babies (Something Your Me Started I think you'd also love thinking about it as well, as well as It's Only Love). So glad you checked this out though, can't wait for more!!!

@@bethcushway458 yes,it was a beautiful song (Stars)and For Your Babies...Mick just has an awesome voice. Another group that pretty much was totally overlooked here in the US was Smokie, recently discovered Chris and the band 6-8 years ago.. only song I remembered playing here was Stumblin In with Suzi Quartro...wish I would've researched them way back when I heard that song while growing up,since finding out about Smokie,Chris leaving and being replaced by Alan Barton and after a short 9 years or so Alan passing away in Cologne, Germany after their tour bus had an accident and Mike Craft taken over until recently. ..I fell in love, not hardly one song by Smokie or Chris Norman that I didn't fall in love with, even enjoyed Mike's voice...just didn't seem like "Smokie" so much anymore.

Loved this reaction… and as I’m from Manchester England I have to say ‘ about bloody time’ Simply Red have always had a piece of my heart, my grandma was there biggest fan. Luckily for me, after 30 years I finally got to see Mick sing live in concert earlier this year and he’s still pitch perfect. Maybe react to something abit more up tempo like A new flame or something got me started or money’s too tight to mention, you’ll get a better idea of Micks vocal range, he’ll always be one of the best male vocalist ❤

He also covers the Stylistics song...You make me feel brand new... check that one out, you won't be disappointed. Excellent song choice tonight, it's been a while since I heard it, this was something I played on repeat when it came out.

Mick Hucknall introduced my generation to Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes' sound and now you've been introduced to my generation's soulful mastery in Simply Red. The cycle just keeps on turning.

Teddy Pendergrass sings the original with Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes. Mick Hucknall has an amazing voice. So soulful "Money's Too Tight To Mention" and "Sunrise" are two others you must check out!

Oh! You two! reaction adorable. Amber "I love Simply Red" lets just slip that in. I agree. 👍First time I heard this song, it was the voice, smooth, warm, clear, and controlled, naturally. Oh, yes, I love the long-red-locks😆. Your love for music shows up every time.👍☝️🤓

I still stop dead in my tracks when I hear Holding Back the Years. I can't recall if you reacted to it yet. Like so many have mentioned, this is Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes cover that is also a recording to react to.

This was such a huge wedding song back then. Played at every wedding reception I went to. If you seen a single woman you wanted to dance with you went and got her. I often ask the DJ when he was playing this song hold up 1 finger so I knew it was next and then I stand by the girl I wanted to dance with or go out to the floor and cut in right after the current song ended ☺️

With an immense back catalogue, it's so weird people directed you to one of their very few cover versions! It's a great cover, don't get me wrong. You need to hear the original and then dig into Simply Red for real! Check out For Your Babies, Fairground, A New Flame, Money's Too Tight To Mention, Stars, Say You Love Me, Sunrise, We're In This Together...and sooo many more!
