Let's not conflate the issue. This wasn't about a card game, it was just a wife who didn't really love her husband and was actively looking for ways to control him. He explained it pretty easily. When he focused on work, she was annoyed and wanted him to have fun. When he picked up a hobby, she was annoyed and wanted him to focus on work. Change the hobby, the results are the same. Just an unhappy person who felt trapped in their situation that they themselves created, and they gaslit their partner over and over until he finally gave up. That's all.

I just started getting back into the TCG and I've been playing way too much master duel again. My wife knows little to nothing about Yu-Gi-Oh but when I bought quarter century boxes I would have her open two of the packs and I would blind guess the TCG player market price. Don't quit your hobbies because of a spouse or partner. I've been a fan of Yugioh since I watched the anime and got back into physically playing it a few years ago after my mom died. It was a great coping with my grief, and I play with a few friends every Wednesday evening. In fact, my fiancée introduced me to one of her friend's husbands who plays it and he's a father of two. I'm sorry for the guy. It never ceases to amaze how some of these chicks are aware of your hobbies prior to dating and marriage but then expect you to stop it once things get serious, yet they'll be the same ones who don't want you to say anything when they spend their time going out with their girlfriends or shopping a lot. The only time I can see a guy give up Yugioh or any card game is if it takes control of his life and neglect those around him, but this, obviously, isn't the case.

Friend of mine’s girl hated whenever he played video games because she “feels like he is ignoring her”. So, instead, she forced him to watch whatever TV shows she was watching. She wouldn’t even let him play his Switch while watching tv with her either because “he wasn’t paying attention to her”. I just don’t understand that way of thinking bro. Your last point is very true and most people seem to forget that. So my wife does not understand the game and thinks it’s stupid but understands it’s important to me. She has no issues with me going but gets rightfully upset when it becomes a constant affair. We both hold a position where family is first. Everything else comes second. She knows I need that time so I go 2-3 times a month providing nothing crazy is going on. But it’s just a hobby to me. She much rather me playing a card game than have me at the club or getting drunk on the weekends. Relationships are built on trust, loyalty, respect, and understanding. I’m a happily single man who had a rough start growing up but I am making a living off of working a 2-10 factory job as a custodial worker. Making bread for me and my mother to which who I love dearly and live with. But even I know that some people think that status is the measure of a man/woman when it should really be the reflection of their personality and character that matters. Games, cards, cartoons, anime, manga, and other things boys and men play with are just as equivalent to girls and women playing with dolls, dressing up, shopping, going out to the clubs/beaches/resorts. If they don’t see you for how you provide for them on an emotional level and only see you as their personal ATM machine or someone to put down, then they are not even an option for dealing with let alone dating. Other girls who will appreciate you for who you are will be out there for you to find. They will do things most modern women won’t do such as playing games, investing in their careers, taking care of their family, and even hang out with other guys who are interested in their hobbies.

The only real "need to grow up" in regards to yugioh for me was realizing the cost. The $$$ if you don't hold yourself back is just burned cash because reprints kill re-sale value once you get tired of a deck etc. etc. The other is the opportunity cost. Keeping up and staying on top of the meta takes so much time, which also feels wasted after every new release, banlist etc. you gotta do it all over again. Downsizing was the right call for me and expanding into other less demanding less "live service" hobbies. I'm not too shocked that people judge anymore, especially if they have insight into how demanding this game is. Then again if it's a toxic hateful relationship, sure leave it. Note how even you mention the opportunity cost too, 100k subs might have been a million for many other passions.

Let this be a lesson about choosing spouses. Here's the truth tho, the guy's a content creator with a side gig playing music on the streets, but where will he be 10, 20 years from now? Yeah, he can manage to pay the bills but she's looking for the security blanket she married him for. Where's the retirement savings? The medical funds? The extra side fund if they had children? The guy sounded like he's just living in the now. On the other hand, if he's making money, making more than expected, and he's having fun, she fucked up by not supporting him. One of the big things about yu-gi-oh is relationships and doing what you can for the greater good for the people you love and even the world. It also shows many ways of how not to be as a person... at least in terms of the yu-gi-oh show's and it's other content and really there is a lot of great things and life lessons that can carry over to real life that in fact makes a great person. Character building is great for all ages and something we all should be doing everyday we live. Getting in a room full of other people who actually want to talk to each other and be a part of society is a vary positive thing. Idk bro, I watched the video. It sounded like she was fw him and tried to push him to be better. I get he was an entrepreneur but he was also a street performer, no car, and I thought he said he didn’t have his own spot either. It was a bad situation to begin with, but she chose to date a guy in that position. I’ve had relationships where they thought my TCG habits were nerdy, but I was also, educated, successful, and just bought my 3rd home. My wife supports my habits because I get shit done outside of those habits. If all I did was play Yugioh and go play my guitar on the corner for 3-6hrs a week, there would be issues, as there should be.
