2:31 "a couple kids" .. never has such a banal line been sung with such emotion and redemptive meaning
@wilhelmhaven66955 жыл бұрын
Several years later, and this song remains as wonderful as ever. Life has changed since first hearing it (a couple of kids, mahogany furniture), so it resonates even more. I love most of HGM's output, but he really struck gold with this song in particular.

Agreed. So much music focuses on young drama. There's not a lot of music that accurately captures middle age challenges. This knocks it out of the park.

I had the pleasure of seeing hiss golden messenger play alongside bon iver last night in MD. It was the greatest concert I have EVER been to, hands down. So glad it was them and not another supporting band otherwise I never would have discovered this incredible song.

incredible song. The lyrics really moved me. "The misery of love is a funny thing The more it hurts The more you think You can stand a little pain"...
@merty1111807 жыл бұрын
Your right. I think its not the pain of an unhappy dad in a family situation, its the pain of giving up sacrificing old habits, transforming into a more selfless person thats forced by making little changes repeatedly when you raise kids.

Yeah, I think it's about a man growing up, facing responsibilities and finding happiness in that.

I think this is one of the best songs this year. I like the story also.

Another (now) classic. love these guys. first saw them in Austin TX with Phil & Brad Cook of Megafaun. So good. They had a powerful show in Athens last night at the Georgia Theater. Stalwart Phil Cook on board and of course old members of Court & Spark, a previous client of our little Athens, GA Music PR firm Team Clermont. loving seeing the success. congrats.

Mahogany dread= that beautiful mahogany dreadnought guild acoustic guitar he's playing

I think it's a double entendre. Fear of death (mahogany coffin) plus he can now afford a nice guitar for his simple pleasures.

I think "mahogony"in the songs title is the metaphor for newly married with children domesticity...the need for furniture in the house....the whole lifestyle package..Dread...but happy days are still ahead ..great video..great song...but I"m really fond of the next cd..."like a Levee"

The chords and melody of this tune owe quite a lot to 'That's the way it is' by Bruce Hornsby. Still love it though

I think the "mahogany dread" is indeed a metaphor......he's playing one in the video - looks like an old Guild D-25.
