Executive Director Justin Reash interviews author Matthew Goodwin on his new book "Values, Voices and Virtue."
Over the last decade, Britain has been rocked by a series of political revolts. The rise of national populism, the vote for Brexit, Boris Johnson's emphatic 2019 election victory, the fall of Labour's Red Wall, and the emergence of a very different brand of conservatism have all outflanked the country's liberal establishment and stunned the world. In trying to make sense of this remarkable churn and change, many commentators cling to very short-term and unconvincing explanations, pointing to social media, dark money, individual leaders, or the promises made to voters.
But, as acclaimed political scientist Matthew Goodwin reveals in this strikingly original study, this turbulence has been a long time in the making - and it is set to continue for many years to come. Embarking on a profound and wide-ranging analysis of postwar British politics, Goodwin shows how these revolts are all symptomatic of deeper shifts that are now rapidly reshaping our political world. He points to the rise of three new drivers over 'values', 'voice' and 'virtue', and shows how these uniquely powerful divides are now pushing us into a new era of political volatility.
Matthew J. Goodwin is Professor of Politics at the University of Kent. The author of four books, including the Sunday Times bestseller National Populism, he appears regularly in print and broadcast media including the Sunday Times and the BBC. Goodwin has advised more than 200 organisations on political issues.

The problem with the EU for us was we had 9% of MEPs. It doesn't really matter how democratic it is if your electorate is just a small part of the whole. You still effectively have no voting power.

A man of huge intelllectual penetration. Matthew, how come you went to Salford for your first degree? Why not Oxford or Bristol or University College London or Cambridge? Did you not work hard at school or was there some special reason for going to Salford? You are damn clever and well worth listening to.

There are some excellent clergy in their parishes, but the bishops and archbishops are very substandard, with many following anything and anyone but Christ. And they don't manage to be managers at all.

It did cause a storm (it's still brewing) - the 'remainers' have been plotting and sabotaging the referendum vote from day one - what they say 'off air' and behind the scenes would be a real eye-opener! Brexit sent shock waves through our Government, they hadn't planned to lose - and it sent the EU into a spin whereby they had to get busy locking down and twisting all the thumb-screws to put the UK through the proverbial wringer. But then to appreciate this man's words and actually read his book you would have to have some intellectual ability?

@@kaywhy245f I feel stressed, I’ll sometimes re-watch the BBC’s coverage of the referendum result . It’s so relaxing, with the benefit of hindsight, to hear the smug and complacent optimism of all those entitled remainders.
