And before anyone says anything, I am well aware Carter vs Reagan was a blowout and Reagan won with like 10 million more votes or something. What I believe is that '68 was always going to be a close one with a Republican victory unless Bobby survived whereas 1980 could easily have gone for Carter had Reagan not done his usual scummy bs. Had Carter been able to get the hostages released during his tenure before the election, I don't think it would have been a blowout for him but, I believe it would have been a much closer race that makes his re-election more probable.
