Hold On Tight! Navigating the Legendary Arizona Sidewinder on Route 66" The Oatman Highway, also known as the "Arizona Sidewinder", is an eight-mile stretch of Route 66 in Arizona with 191 curves, turns, and switchbacks. It's located in the Black Mountains, southwest of Kingman, and is one of the earliest alignments of the route The route starts in Kingman and travels south to Oatman, where visitors can watch a wild west re-enactment or feed the wild burros. The road is not a US or state route, but a county road that's part of the famous "Mother Road," US 66.
The route is known for its switchbacks through the mountains. Schaffers Fish Bowl and Spring, Ed's camp, The Saddle Sore Ranch and the Cool Springs gift shop mark the entrance to the Sidewinder.

My dad was a high school teacher in Kingman from 1954 - 1976, and my mom was an RN at the "old" hospital. I grew up in Kingman and remember when they brought the train engine to the park. I can also remember when there were Stuckeys all along the road ways. I graduated from Kingman High in 1970 and was there before Hwy 40 was built. Lots of fond memories of Kingman, Oatman, Bullhead City, and remember Laughlin before there were any casinos. When I went to high school Havasu high school students were bused to Kingman. My dad and I did research on bats (yes bats) and we went into many of the old mines before they became tourist attractions.

Thanks for the tour, Russ. My Dad loved the desert he would take us out gold panning, rock hounding, and target shooting every summer when I was out of school. His last new car was a 1967 Ford Fairlane and he drove it like a 4x4 truck all over the desert if we got stuck we dug it out, great times. Take care, Mike

For some reason every time I see that road it always reminds me of the movie with Lucy and Desi the long, long trailer :-) I know it wasn't filmed there but something about all the curves and imagining someone taking a jumbo trailer behind an old mercury. Just cracks me up.

Speaking of Andy Devine here was an episode of "The Fugitive" (Seas. 3 Episode 5, October 12, 1965) filmed on that road and inside of the hotel Andy Devine owned. Per IMDB "There actually is a High Desert Inn located at 2803 E. Andy Devine Ave, Kingman, AZ 86401. Andy Devine was a long-time character actor who was born in Flagstaff, Arizona, before it was a state."

Hey Russ, thanks for the great video(s). You kept mentioning the wildflower Bloom (or lack of this year) If you really want to see wildflowers in mass abundante, get to Texas next year last week of March- first week of April. Take Hwy 16 south from Llano to Fredericksburg. Be sure and stop at both Enchanted Rock & Willow City Loop (both right off Hwy 16) before you get to Fredericksburg. Lots of RV park choice in the Hill Country. Maybe hit Luckenbach on your way put of Fredericksburg. Enjoy & safe travels.

Purple flowers look like Lupine. I was going to take Route 66 from Kingman to Oatman this fall but your video convinced me no way. I have a 34ft Class A. I don't mine the windy road - a lot like 395 through E. Oregon but the narrow road and horrible road conditions - nope. I did have someone tell me from Kingman to Oatman there is a place where the rocks stick out into the road. With his 40ft DP he had to go into the other lane to not hit it. Didn't see anything like that in your video.
