This town is adorable. I really need to check out all these beaches between Tavira and the border.

Did you notice the tiles with poems? On the walls of Cacela Velha there are tiles with poems. Also they have every September a poetry festival. The berber poet Ibn Darraj was born there (958 AC). He is known as Ibn Darraj al-Qastalli(from Castela). He was admired in all Iberian Peninsula. The place now is very small but it was an important village before the Roman's presence (before 2000 bc). Conios people. Cacela Velha has a marvellous sun set.

I'm so happy you enjoyed it and I look forward to sharing more of our amazing paradise over here. There are so many amazing little spots in the East Algarve, it's such a hidden gem (ok so maybe not hidden to everyone when you see the parking during the summer season).

Adventures of an American Xpat In the Algarve. Well, yes. The summer is for the tourists and, as you said, you can always take refuge in those hidden gems one can find inland. And there are many. I did my military service in Tavira and lived both in Portimao and Vilamoura, though I am from Lisbon. Once again, thanks for sharing your pleasant experience in my country. Take care.

Thank you for your beautiful Algarve videos. I spent some time there last summer and I loved it! Can you please comment on the what the weather is like in the winter time? Is heating required in the homes? Just wondering as I'm thinking of wintering there in my retirement but have only visited in summer. Thanks and keep those great videos coming : )
@AmericanInPortugal4 жыл бұрын
Come visit in the winter for sure as it can get cooler (no snow of course) but the older homes and homes built with lower insulation ratings can get to be a bit "wet" cold so it feels colder than it is. I run cold so I run my heater most of the winter. Think like Central CA in Winter by the beach. Some days can be glorious however. I've had many 70 degree and sunny days in winter but there can be rain and cool days also. Maybe check the online weather for the region you are looking in as the West is a bit more windy and cool vs the East.

Hello Veronica. Allow me a small correction which will also work as usefull information to present and future expats in Portugal. GNR (Guarda Nacional Republicana) is not a National Police, as there's no such thing in Portugal. GNR and PSP (Public Safety/Security Police) are the biggest portuguese police forces (in numbers). They take care of public safety and investigate smaller crimes (GNR in the countryside and PSP in urban areas). There are also 2 other police forces: PJ (Judicial Police), that investigates most serious crime (murder, all kinds of trafficking, kidnapping, armed robberies, terrorism, etc) and SEF (Aliens and Border Service), resposible for border control and investigation of illegal immigration and human trafficking (these 2 are also under the scope of PJ). These are the 4 main LEA in Portugal. Hope this info is usefull.

The way u pronounce "velha" sounds like "vela" which means candle in portuguese. The "h" makes a huge difference when is located after l or n, nha or lha. Just a good tip for you 😉

My husband and I are 22 months from retiring early. We are coming on a scouting vacay this December. My question: we want to be in a similar area with beach, Spain at our door step. We are small town people, not city. Can you recommend an area? Next question: Can we budget $650 or less for a one bedroom furnished place with a pool, in a nice area, or is that crazy? Third and last question: Can we get residency if we stay 7 months in Portugal and 5 months in US? Thank you. When we are ready to jump, I would love to have you find our rental and eventual purchase of home.

have a resource sheet (pdf) that I just created. I can email it to you if you send me a quick email (and reference that you’d like the sheet) and I will email it. Vondrejech@cbluxus.pt This site (link below) just did an in depth interview with me and it answers many questions you may have about moving to Portugal. It’s slanted a bit towards the retired military segment but still answers most questions. www.poppinsmoke.com/expat-retiree-profile-american-moving-to-portugal/

Hi V! check out this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6OWfnmEapZ3lac to get the LH sound pronunciation. Think of GLI in Italian or LL in Spanish. That's what relatively the LH sounds like in Portuguese
