I love how Seth, Crim, and Richard went for jank-level decks while Phil brought all the OP 5-color Historic cards.

This is my issue with Historic Brawl (I've played A LOT of it). It's either 3-5 color good stuff solitaire, counterspell tribal, mono black discard, or mono red aggro. Because these "archetypes" have the most support in the smaller card pool to stay consistent even with 100 cards. No matter how jank you make your deck (I did literally all uncommons mono blue with no counterspell), you'll still face one of these decks. Even though it's a casual format, there's no way to avoid what essentially amount to tuned decks, which in turn causes everyone else to forcibly tune their deck just to survive. I think it's fair those decks exist, but it'd be nice if there was respite. Frankly as a 1v1 format, I'd appreciate some bans some of the cards that let these decks stay consistent even with 100 cards.

@@shadowpsyke It's not a problem because it's not a competitive format, you can just concede when you see the commander they play. Most people aren't playing 5 colour nonsense. My problem is more some stuff like Time Warp, FotD, just cards that are insanely OP compared to what most people are playing. It's fair for me to lose to an archetype, doesn't bother me if there is a lot of support the format will grow with more sets, that's just natural, but the ban list is just not very good.

What I realy don't like about Emergent Ultimatum is that it looks like a value toolbox card, but is actualy just a 1-card combo. You search the same three cards every game no matter the board state.

It's fine if you like it, but it's not like "old edh" and it's not battlecruiser within the context of the format at all.

Good lord Phil's deck was busted lol. His deck is literally just five color all the cards everyone hates or has hated in standard and historic. I personally wouldn't even enjoy playing that but eh everyone has there niche.

It's not _every_ card we all hate - there's no Ugin8! :) ...But here's Field of the Dead and extra turns so w/e. Really shows how brutal 'high-tier commander' decks are in Historic Brawl though, because you see decks like Phil's all the time. Golos, Prismatic Bridge, Jodah are usually piles like these. Gets to be a little old.

I think it really highlights his play style. He makes a lot of noise about apparent threats and tries to get the other players to handle them. He doesn't do anything about anything until it directly and significantly impacts him. He was especially concerned about Seth's enchantment mana dork, but he could have counter it with the Swan Song. If he genuinely thought they would lose to it, he could have countered it. Extra turns don't directly lose you the game, so he let them resolve.

Arena can't support multiplayer. However they could make another client that doesn't have mobile dependency and utilizes the existing cards. It would also be able to just use your same account. Unless they really botched the code

This Phil guy is the typical edh new guy that does 0 politics, 0 threat assessment and stuffs in the best stuff he can play with. Most of us have been there so its kind of understandable but still a little painful to watch at times.

I think he just needs to be more chatty and create his own catchy phrases to make references in future games and create his own trademark style. The games here are terrible (strategically speaking) but I keep watching them since the very first episode because of the conversations they have.

Yeah, it's a 'phase' new players in particular go through. Good stuff is definitely my least favorite archetype to both play and play against (*yawn* Golos). Hope to see something special in the future from him though when he gets over the "I need to play this" mentality.

Phil comes from Brawl, so it kinda makes sense. Regular Brawl doesn't have the card pool to actually play a very thematic deck outside of something incredibly generic such as "Lifegain"... And in Historic Brawl, because there's no social aspect, it's 1v1, and there's a lot of ridiculously good cards and commanders: there's a much higher drive to play-to-win, as opposed to play for flavour. Just give him time to adjust, I'm sure he'll do fine

Brawl is a crappy format, and this game showcases exactly why. Just play a 5 color list loaded with as much ramp and bombs as possible because the card pool is so bad, if you want to be successful. Definitely not interested in trying brawl out in the slightest. On a more general note, it's very clear that Phil is a strictly generic goodstuff.dec player based on the games/lists so far. Perhaps for this season you guys can move from the "play janky weird stuff" to playing more tuned lists? I don't speak for everyone, but watching birds & skeletons get hosed by Riku/Jodah/Golos (in the future I'm sure) sounds pretty bad imo. Sorry Richard, I don't mean to out you in particular- just the best example to convey the point.

Ok first off, chill with the out of pocket comments about who is what kind of player. Second, if Phil is that kind of player that is perfectly okay, he is fairly new to edh and most people are like that in the beginning. The meta will shift and it will balance out. (either the other guys will start punishing the good stuff play style with efficient interaction or Phil will get bored of it. Hopefully the former.) But, we need to remember that people enjoy what they enjoy and shouldn't be lambasted for doing what they enjoy. I say the same thing when people get down on Crim for be "that guy." ( the control/counter-top player) just let the season play out and if you aren't enjoying it, just wait for next season and it will have changed. That is what I do when the infighting and backbiting gets to much. Most importantly, just be nice. They put this content out for free and out of love for the game. So don't be to hard on them.

The second portion of My comment was directed at the rest of the crew, and the most disrespectful part of it was aimed at Richard in particular. I don't care if someone wants to copy/paste lists from the internet every week, or jams Mana Drain/counterbalance/top into every deck they make. As for putting Phil into a box as to what kind of player he is, that's my opinion- and I stand by it 100%. Everybody is some "kind of player" and whatever that happens to be is what it is. I understand they'll probably ignore my request, but I can still make it nonetheless. I'm not going to debate the fallacy of them "doing this for free", it's simply not true in the slightest- though I do appreciate the content they provide.

I did not like this match at all. Phil's deck power level was way above the other players´, turning into a game where nothing happening the first hour mattered. I hate combo decks for the same reason. The other three decks were completely fine to me. Commander is not brawl where the social contract is inexistant.

While most weeks I'm actually fine with Richard doing his politics, it really feels disingenuous this week for some reason. I feel like part of it's because Seth, Richard, and Phil are actually pushing to try and make an effort to keep him honest, and it's making Richard reach for straws.

Richard was pretty much the only one that tried to do any politics tho. Rest of the table just tried to win on their own terms and gang up on the one guy trying to police the table and negotiate. I think it just felt frustrating for him to read out obvious board state conclusions while getting ignored and shut down with ''no u'' the entire game.

From that viewpoint, it wasn't Richard's politics being disingenuous; It was that he was the only one trying to politic whatsoever. It gives me a bit more sympathy for him, though the attempts using the Strixhaven Stadium (when he had it on board) as leverage still felt less like politics and more like straight up blackmail as the number of counters on it ticked up over time.
