My late Father Colin Taylor competed and took part in the Historic 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally. This is a film he made for Duckhams Oil and I am proud to share it with the world. Please share the glorious past by passing this on - Thank you

So many memories of this event at times when most countries still had strict controls. Doing all the maps with the car owner. Meeting world famous competitors. Months of preparation. Some works had already driven the route but most had not. Being a privateer Having to carry all spares which had to be checked in at each border. Being shot at by police as we were running late and could not stop at road works. Being fined for speeding by corrupt police who were later jailed. Driving past guarded workers in fields who were not allowed to watch these mad people in cars. So many memories to put with all my other motorsports memories. Thank you for bringing them back.

I was ten, in Costa Rica. I remember a few of these cars vividly and the drivers were super nice guys. Our neighbors managed the Dunlop dealer in San Jose and they took me to the checkpoint, the shop and even speeding around San Jose looking for spare parts! I’ll never forget! 👍🏻😊

Mr Taylor . I was 12 years old and every day i went to my uncle house to red a litle lines about the development of the race ,expecting the day the rally cross my country, becouse we have no tv or any othe way to know about , and the same time we try to collect litle stamps with footboll player of world cup Mexico 1970 , expecting to see Jimmie Graves UK footbool player. 4 years ago I purchase the book 40 years from Dayly Mirror , and I keep this like a letter sended by a love one from faraway. Costa Rica .Thanks to your Father , those were the type of reyoice that we had before in Central America.

Three Bolivian drivers participated in this rally, with a BMW num. 29 (William Bendeck, Diether Hubner and Burgos.) They alone did everything (drivers and mechanics). They entered the Mexico stadium in fourth place, only in the final classification it was in the 13th. In Europe they were lost for more than an hour. What a memorable race, never again was one like it.

Fantastic memories Chris, we lived in Wembley so i remember being taken along to this at 7 years old, i've watched and enjoyed this a few times over the years, i vividly remember walking around the paddock seeing the Mk 1 Escorts with the unusual roof to strut external bars, also a Rolls Royce and thinking, unusual! and the 4 door Conroy Mtrs mini, and all the matt black bonnets, also the Rosemary Smith Maxi, thinking how colorful with the orange stripes in a paddock of mainly white cars. We followed the convoy away from the Stadium and into London, at least as far as Westminster Bridge, we even pulled up alongside Roger Clark at a set of traffic lights, and Dad pretended to goad him into a burn-up, edging forward in his Jag, much to Roger's amusement i seem to also remember. Wishful thinking, but at 4.21 there's an elevated shot with a grey Jaguar S Type (ours was a 420) reversing into a parking space, it struck me that was the sort of thing Dad was prone to do, deciding where he was going to park, even if it wasn't a proper space, who knows, thanks again for posting

Fantastic - just discovered this. My uncle, Doug Harris, was a Privateer entry in No45, a Ford Escort 1300GT - the final competitor to finish at Mexico (only 23rd of 96 original entries!). What an amazing piece of history. Many thanks.

@Chris Taylor : my inlaw travelled all of south america with a convertible 15CV Traction Citroen (only 3 in the world!) . He met the local guy who bought Citroen DS21 #12 (neyret/terramorsi) after its retirement in the London Mexico 70 race, and bought it back from him, got the car slightly repaired, and shipped it to Mexico in 2016, to "finish the race", some ... 48 years after starting it at Wembley! The car's now ready for the 50th anniversary at Gaydon. We're looking for some material, to complete a written doc about the race, coming along with the car itself, plus a family documentary of the 1st trip in south america. I'd really love to get in touch with you, to see if we can achieve some work together on this fascinating race, where your late father competed too. Best regards from France.

On different occasions I have made reference to this World event that originated in the Stadium of Wembley England. The Rally Mundial Mexico 70 to promote the World Famous Mexico 1970, which was the graduation of the Brazilian National Team. In that year I was 12 years old, I was in the first year of the Liceo del Sur College) almost nothing, daily we ran to the library to read the sports section to know the progress of the rally from Europe and when and what time would pass through Costa Rica. In this video, in the 35th minute; 50 seconds, the runners traveled from Colombia to Panama with their vehicles coming from Argentina and Chile, and were preparing to cross Central America from Costa Rica and Nicaragua to the Estadio Azteca. Do not be a second in the Interamerican route, in the area of Guanacaste and the entrance to Peñas Blancas Nicaragua, there are some trucks parked along the road, felling recognized by the border of the Nica side. The trip between Paso Canos and Cartago The winner of the event in 3 hours and 20 minutes, leaving at 11 at night. When I got up in the morning, the nation announced that I had refueled in the SHELL PASEO COLÓN pump and 8 and 30 were in Peñas Blancas. They can advance the video to the 35th minute. Before finishing, they are the few seconds of history. Mike Costa Rica. Witness. These is something that i shared today on a old truckers page .

Chris...many congratulations and thanks for your efforts in getting this film online. Your late father would be proud as punch, I'm sure. I own (since 1983) a Capri Mk1 reg GVX 40H that ran as car 69 in the 1970 event, and also as car 2 in the 1974 London-Sahara-Munich World Cup Rally. Sadly, my car doesn't appear in 'your' film, although as an ex Saab specialist and Group2 rally 96V4 owner who lived for many years near Haymill Motors, I was delighted to watch the footage of your Dad's efforts through the familiar screen of another V4. I wonder if you have any other photographic stuff or info to do with the event? My Capri's shell is now an 'as new' rolling shell awaiting reassembly through 2015, and I was fortunate to have tracked down the team of 22 mean from Ford at Dunton who built 'my' car for drivers Brian Peacock and Dave Skittrall. Maybe we can swap stories or info if it helps either way.

Chris was your father driving the Morris 1800? I understand reading some material in one of the Britich Classic magazines that the 1800 was of 2 litre capacity. Thanks for your posts, I am rereading A Boot Full of Right Arms by Evan Green, a time when there was little PC rubbish, what an adventure, have you ever considered writing about your dads time on these rallies.

Hi Chris. Michael has just passed this on to me after I contacted him about our plan to do a sort of a WCR40 follow up this year in May at Gaydon. I put together WCR40 in 2010, a celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the World Cup Rally, inassociation with a team of friends and it was a great success. This years FREE event is planned to be about all the marathons of the 1960s and 70s, cars and personalities (competitors, organisers, team personnel) which of course means that the 1970 World Cup Rally will be at the heart of it but we also will be including any Historic car and personalities of this period marathon or not because they so rarely seem to have anything to get them all out together in one place. Like Michael I have a couple of Historic Marathon cars (note my use of capitals to represent original cars), Landcrabs one of which did the 1968 London Sydney, 1969 Monte and Rally du Maroque, and the World Cup Rally, the other did not start the 1970 WCR but was an entrant with all the records and promotion completed but had to withdraw with about a month to go after one of the drivers had a serioous accident in Thailand. Please get in touch if you want to know more of our evenat later this year. Incidently I remember your late father and work on rally matters and delighted this film has been posted in full.
