The home was built for Colonel William Dickinson who managed the real
estate arm of the California Southern Railroad. It is the most spectacular
Queen Anne building in San Diego County, second only to the Hotel
Coronado, which was designed by the same architectural firm. The house
directly across the street was built for his son John Boal.

Built - 1895
Architect - Irving Gill
Style - Colonial Revival
One of Gill’s earliest surviving examples. While the home is built in the
Colonial Revival style so popular at the time, Gill’s later style can already
be seen in this elegant home emerging as he stripped away ornament and
simplified it from the more ornate Colonial Revivals of the time. This is a
remarkably intact estate, with its original carriage house and servants cottage.
D.K. Horton was a major stockholder and investor in the Santa Fe Railroad.

Also for those who dont know, the first big house as you metioned (boal house) is apart of a cult classic called "return of the killer tomatoes", i believe it was George clooneys first films, nice little gem!

Born in National City 1949 and moved to the OC in 1962. Thank you for this wonderful trip back to my childhood. My father, a WWII vet was on the NCPD. On July 4th they would shoot fireworks from Kimball Park and we would throw a blanket on the front lawn where we had probably the best view in town. My parents moved to the E 15th & J Ave area after WWII. I choked up at the memorial. My Dad is buried in Fort Rosecrans. My heart is still in National City even if I barely recognize any of it.

Thank you Will for the tour of Historic Homes of National City!!! There is so much I had never seen before!! I used to live on "C" Ave and went to John A. Otis Elementary in 1981!!! My younger sister, brother and I spent a LOT of time playing at Kimball park, visiting the little zoo and the library!! Not to mention the Hanging out at the Boys Club by the Fire house. Man we walked EVERYWHERE around that area!! LOL Thank you for taking the time on this vlog!!! It was a wonderful trip down memory lane!! I miss home every day! I now live in Arkansas. It's not home. SoCal will always be my home! 🥰🥰🥰

I was raised in the city and passed by these houses all the time but never knew they were open. I’ve never known anyone to go to that olivewood gardens so thanks for that. I’ve always wondered what happened to the kimballs and the Horton because I’ve never met one and they are the founders. Las palmas bridge used to be quite the adventure, you never knew who you would meet going across. Sometimes good sometimes bad.
