Railfanning Southern California in the 1950s and
Santa Fe's Pasadena Subdivision
Historic Hot Spots are etched in the minds of those who were there firsthand and revered by those who wish they had been. This amazing collection allows young and old alike to enjoy those wondrous times of transition in American railroading. Two best-selling programs are combined on one DVD, bringing you images from the 1950s and 1960s, taken at the best train-watching spots in Southern California. Included are:
Railfanning Southern California in the 1950s (60 Minutes)
Diesels were replacing the last of the mighty steam locomotives on the Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, and Santa Fe in the 1950s. You'll see 4-8-4s, 2-10-2s, and Cab Forwards, plus EMD E- and F-units, SD9s, Alco PAs and FAs, FM C-Liners, Baldwins and more. Freight and passenger trains are shown at Cajon, Tehachapi, Beaumont Pass, LAUPT, Glendale and Burbank Junction; even over Santa Fe's Elsinore Branch. It's one of the most appealing railroad films ever!
Santa Fe's Pasadena Subdivision (80 Minutes)
Step back to the early 1950s to watch Santa Fe's elegant streamlined passenger trains El Capitan and The Chief. Gleaming Alco PAs and EMD F-units head up these glamorous trains over the route from San Bernardino through Pasadena to Los Angeles. Ride in the cab of an F-7 on The Chief over Cajon Pass to Barstow, reaching speeds of 95 mph! There is plenty of classic passenger train action in this exciting show!

Now this is the kind of railroading that I like! Back when railroading in California was truely awesome! Trains today will never be as cool as the good ol' days!

I can vaguely recall as a small child my dad walking with me down to the railroad tracks on San Fernando Road in Glendale to see the trains go by. I can remember them saying let's go see the Choo Choo train and I was ready to go. This would have been around 1953 as we moved to the Sunland Tujunga area in 1954. Almost got killed at Chevy Chase and the railroad tracks in 1969 when the signal arm failed to lower and I just missed the train by about 20 feet. Wish they would bring back train travel like it was in the 50s.

Opening street sot featured a Chevy Corvair in front of the bus. A really great car, vilified unnecessarily by Ralph Vader. I owned one in my late teens, and loved it. Way ahead of its time with its air cooled engine.

Goddamn this is surreal to watch. It's so hard to believe passenger rail service was this widespread, this elegant, and this big. That there were Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, and ATSF passenger rail lines, all with long consists and beautiful engines, and even steam power working along the side. It was all bound to die eventually, but it's a shame regardless.

Had two nice intercity depots in Atlanta back then: the large, Spanish Mission-styled Terminal Station featured Southern Railway System, Atlanta and West Point, Central of Georgia and Seaboard Air Line passenger trains. Union Station, a block away, was a Beaux Arts-styled depot, served by Atlantic Coast Line, Georgia Railroad and Louisville and Nashville trains. Both were razed in 1972. Atlanta has no romance for it's past.

Agreed, locomotives are more powerful and efficient than ever before. But they're soulless creations now, and every railroad in the US runs the same models. No need for railfans to travel anymore--like Walmart, the railroad scene is universal coast to coast now.
