Historic Kinsale

A reflection on some old pictures of Kinsale, Co. Cork, Ireland

That was lovely. My mum is from Kinsale. Anne Crean from Worlds End. Mum is now 92 and physically OK but with Alzheimer's so she is back in those times again. Being born in 1926 she saw great changes. In 1950s she left to London after her brothers were drowned in Kinsale in an accident and then her father died a few years later. She met my dad in South London. I grew up in Kent so I know Kinsale mostly through her stories. It is a strange thing to know a place as home and yet be a stranger. I feel like I was always a stranger where ever I have been. London the place of my birth never was to me home. I went north to Scotland for many years then east as far as Estonia and Finland another 20 years. My son plans to study in Ireland at university so maybe he will like and settle in Ireland- I would like that a bit like going finally home.

Thanks for posting such a lovely tribute to the town's history. I am wondering whether you might be the proprietor of the White House, which if yes, you would have known my dad well.

Really excellent photographs here. The last photo, was of the barracks and the battalion, what year was that ? My grandfather was here in 1914 with the Royal Fusiliers 1st battalion, where he met my would be grand mother, Mary Madden. Her brother Tim Madden was the curator at the museum for some years.

Michael, great photos and many thanks. The photo of kinsale barracks at 5:33 is interesting. We have been living in Barrack street for 15 years.. it would be nice if you have any further pictures of that so we could figure out where the barracks used to be so we can start spotting the little remains on our walks.

If you would like you can pop into the White House with a memory stick and I will give you anything I have. one of the local historians would be delighted to give you more information on the Barracks. we are very fortunate in Kinsale, with a lot of history comes many historians and sometimes interesting debates.

Thank you for posting this video, Michael. It contains several photos of special significance to me. I don’t know what year they were taken, but when they were, my great-grandmother, Catherine Murphy (1865-1937), owned what was then called Murphy’s Hotel in Kinsale. That’s where one of her children (my grandfather), Charles, lived before emigrating to the USA in the late 1920s. Since the photos were taken the hotel has changed hands many times, as you’ll know. Kitty O’Sé’s, as its known today, reflects the name my great grandmother had before she married in 1894. The photos of the old hotel appear at 04:05, 06:45 and at 10:15. What a treat to come across these for the first time!
