its actually a Hudson or Baltic type. a Pacific is a 4-6-2, this one is a 4-6-4

@@yeoldeseawitch Thanks for the correction. I’ve now looked up the CP 2816, 4,700 hp 100 mph max average 4-8-4 Hudson. It originally burnt coal and was converted to oil at restoration.

I happen to have a 1954 CPR Prairie Region Timetable, and near the back where it shows the maximum operating speeds for its locomotives it shows the maximum speed for this class of locomotive as being 90mph. They were capable of a bit more but keep in mind they only had 75" main driving wheels. NYC's Hudsons had 79" drivers and were much more capable of the 100mph+ speeds that you're thinking of.

No, but the empress is the only 4-6-4 Hudson operating in the U.S. there’s plenty of 4-8-4 northerns operating (the likes of 261)

2816 isn't exactly the big-boy, and those two old F7s only have 1500 HP each, those 3 engines are all working together sure, but 2816 is still pulling her weight

the diesels usually are in idle and are for coach power and dynamic braking, 2816 is doing most if not all the work usually

Goodness me, the diesels are only there in case of a breakdown, dynamic braking, and to relieve some stress off the #2816. Besides that, a majority of the time, #2816 is doing all the work.
