Back in the late 80s my brothers and my father and I hiked the Grand Canyon. Besides being a cherished memory of my father, who passed away less that 10 years later, that memory also included a rather humorous episode at Rod's Steakhouse (you passed it, Russ). Although I'd trained as much as I could for the hike, I found I was woefully inadequate for the hike as were my dad and brothers. We ended up pushing my father the last mile up out of the canyon! We stopped at Rod's for a 'celebratory' steak and, upon seeing us walking in all 'rubber-legged' the hostess remarked, "Hiked the Canyon, I see." LoL!

When I was a kid it was a treat to eat a kid-sized cheeseburger, fries and have a malt. Not every place had them, a kind of old timey drink by then had gone out of style.

Thanks Russ for the ride through Williams. I wanted to check out where the Red Roof Inn is there and found it. Thought about staying there. This popped up on my YT to watch. We've stayed in the RV park in Williams & on 1 trip stopped for burgers & shakes. They were so delicious that we always stop now, except last time place was closed😭. Never stayed in any of their motels. 1 of these days we'll have to spend some extra time & take Gr Cyn rail trip. & you are so right about I40. All the years we've driven it between CA & NM, it's been terrible. Don't know why AZ can't seem to get its road repair act together on I40. Best thing about 40 is getting off on Rt 66 & going thru all the little towns like you're doing👍.

I love rte 66, I got a chance in 2020 to take it on my way from near Lake Havasu city to Oatman and then I went up to Kingman. After that I made all the stops along the way in most of those little towns including Seligman, Ash Fork and another one but I couldn't go to Williams, I needed to get to Flagstaff and it was getting dark, I finally went back to Williams last year...I'm kinda glad I had a reason to go back up North. That was an awesome trip eventually leading to Zion National park....most amazing place I have ever been! Quite the adventure! (too bad at the end? On the way back...MY CAR BROKE DOWN!)

We spent the night in William's a few years ago. We ate dinner at this little corner Mexican restaurant that was in a very old (brick?) building. Inside they had paintings, photographs and news clippings from way back about the building. I wish I could remember the name of it. The food was very good there.

Russ, another great video, you're really condensing the history of our Great Nation by taking us through Route 66, In my opinion if you contact the Unified School District, they should add these videos as a part of driving through SmallTown USA series in their libraries for children to see our Land of Free from Coast to Coast. Just a suggestions worth looking into.

The first time my husband drove west to California in the the late 60s, I40 wasn't finished yet, so he drove US 66 when it was still The Route 66 you had to take. When we would drive I 40, he would show me the parallel road that was the old decommissioned US 66. He said parts were fun, some were just getting tired and ready to be replaced by Interstate Highway, the traffic was too high and trucks too heavy for the older 2 lane system. But we did occasionally get off I40 to go through some of Route 66 and see some of the attractions.

Ash Fork had a lot of bad luck and has never really recovered. In November, 1977 a fire destroyed much of it's downtown and in 1979 was bypassed by I-40. I've read two references in that the people ate at one restaurant and the service was poor, courtesy was almost non existent and the food wasn't cooked properly. Also a Route 66 book that came out some years ago didn't recommend any place in the town. This was some years ago and things could have changed since then as far as accomodations go.

Stayed in motor hotel in 2017😂. Paid almost 100 dollars for the room what a ripoff the room was so small you couldn’t open the door all the way because it hit the bed. The shower rod kept falling while showering. You couldn’t pay me to stay there again. Thank goodness we were only staying one night. But the Grand Canyon was great. Be safe and have fun.
