This decision means that Ukraine must finally get serious about stamping out corruption. This is the biggest obstacle to any kind of European integration. The Ukrainian political and financial system has failed so far to severely punish corrupt actors. Hopefully this changes. I am British, and my country isn't in the European Union any longer. Ukraine should think about how much integration it wants within Europe. There are the options of Norway and Switzerland, which aren't members but access some EU benefits. Anyway, at least there will be something for Ukrainians to look forward to: serious political, judicial, and financial reforms and closer integration into the European community.

Fascinating. I often wondered why a country would join the EU. As an American it seemed insane to give other countries, like Germany and Paris larger control over your currency than your own country. I didn't think of the open boarder aspect, which could mean being a part of a larger community, which could effect security and access to goods, technology, and so on. I'm not sure how the EU works. It's literally a foreign concept to Americans.

Personally, although I love Ukraine and its people very much, I don't think Ukraine joining the EU is a very good idea for all parties. The reason is, Ukraine as a nation does not share many of the values and traditions that underpin and solidify Europe. Ukraine's soul is much tighter and closer tied with Russia's soul (through its traditions, language, conflicts, food and literature). Heck, Kiev was once the capital of Russia and Russian is still the main language. Corruption is massive in Ukraine, of course, but there's no way to ever clean up the criminal element in Ukraine without a complete religious revival sweeping the entire country... which will never, ever happen. The morality and honesty of a nation doesn't spawn from nowhere. Although younger generations of Europeans have been trending atheist of late, the threads of belief in God still exist. Sure, there are churches everywhere in Ukraine, but they're largely empty, and young people in Ukraine don't care at all about God. Basically, the greatest concern about Ukraine to the EU would be the lower level of morality coming to the entire EU, not the potential enormous economic drag that it represents to the wealthier nations. You bring an immoral, massively corrupt country with no belief in God into the EU and it's a recipe for complete disaster for the rest of Europe.
@Olga_Reznikova
@Olga_Reznikova Жыл бұрын
When people talk about cultural similarities with Russia, do they assume all Russia or just few regions near Ukrainian borders? half of Russia looks Asian. They are Asians actually. There are so many nations with their own languages and traditions, far far away from Ukraine at all. I bet you may find more similarities with China maybe, but not with Ukraine.

@@Olga_Reznikova That person is totally misguided and also bluntly wrong. Ukraines religious levels are around Europe's average, and luckily the majority of people have a morality standard way higher that what is dictated by the different religions. Their 2 last sentences are just absurd.

The timeline also depends a bit on Ukraine itself in the following sense: During negotiations, candidate countries usually try to haggle over which exact reforms to do, how fast, the exact manner in which they are done etc. And this process of haggling over many hundreds, of not thousands, of legal adjustments will prolong the negotiating period. If Ukraine haggles a lot less, or not at all in some cases, then that shortens the process. Keep in mind that the 15ish years thing is what happened in the past for the entire process from even just beginning to align with the EU to the day of joining. As Ursula von der Leyen noted before candidate status was granted last year, at that time Ukraine had already implemented 70% of EU legislation, a process that began with the Association Agreement in 2014, so Ukraine is already 10 years into this process while in the middle of a war. Therefore, I think we looking more along the lines of 5 - 10 years with delays when the accession treaty eventually needs to be ratified by all member state parliaments, because there's usually problems along the way like referendums in Ireland, constitutional reviews in Germany and all sorts of things that will delay things.

If after the war Ukraine do eventually join the EU I'm sure in the short term they will benefit financially. But this help will come with conditions such as accepting millions of people from third world countries thus destroying Ukrainian culture. The "woke" EU will then want to change the history of Ukraine to erase the populations memory of this culture. Turkeys voting for Christmas?

While the uncontrolled migration from corrupt, middle eastern religion dominated countries to Europe is an issue for Hungary, as it is for all of Europe, Orban needs to consider that his support of Putin will have more serious economic consequences than his border problems.

It is not beneficial for Ukraine to be in the European Union. EU regulations will slow down the economy. Ukraine is a Swiss-type state - a neutral, transit state between geopolitical centers and should use these advantages. Most likely, the European Union will collapse, just as the USSR collapsed, although in essence the European Union is similar to the USSR.

I think Ukraine will become a rich country, after the war, and especially if they are members of the EU. Now, it has become so well known, and people are going to be curious, and see what Ukraine has to offer, which is a lot. Even during the war, real estate prices are about the same, as before the war, for example.

I would not like to see Ukraine join the United Nations. That would create much more tension between Russia and the United States. Ukraine needs to stand down and become a state of the federation of Russia. Ukraine needs to surrender. Ukraine is turning into a giant graveyard. You have men 45 to 70 years old fighting. A great portion of young men are gone. Peace can be achieved through negotiation.

If Ukraine wants to join the EUSSR then that's up them. I'm glad a Brit that also wanted out of this corrupt union and to this day, no EU budgets has ever been signed off. The British people have no problems doing business in the economic sense, not political union and Poland should do the best move and get out as well.

@@littlewink7941 When the vote put to the people of the UK, they were told about beneficial in economic terms and nothing else. They vote yes for business when it was the EEC. Then come the 1980's, the name changed to EC not EEC and started notice when things massively changing for the worst. New laws being imposed on the people. Let me remind you here the UK government is not the same as it's population and they do not serve them like any around round the world. With many campaigners to try to get the vote have seen by well known political figures and won which proudly voted for. All of those figures in government institutions are all Communist dress in sheep's clothing as democracy. There is a very good book by a former economic and intelligence advisor to the then prime minister, Margaret Thatcher and his name is Christopher Story. During the time he was alive Christopher Story published a book titled, 'The European Union Collective' (2002) and this spelt out and you are interested in view his talks, it is here on KZbin.
