Widely regarded as one of the foremost chroniclers of Duval County's history and architecture, Wayne is called "the undisputed godfather of preservation in Jacksonville." He raises concerns about the ownership of history, restoration versus renovation, when modern becomes historic, and landmarks of the future. In his presentation, Wayne will explore the dynamics of historic preservation from both a national and local perspective.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

If you look at historic neighborhoods as a resource I think this issue makes more sense. We all (as a city) benefit if our cities have historic districts. It increases tourism, gives the city an identity (a brand name), and creates places of high pedestrian traffic that make the perfect spots for local businesses to thrive. When we have interesting places to visit that are beautiful we also benefit psychologically and physically ( we walk around and look at the buildings and gardens and go into the local stores, and we feel good after visiting them). When the national park and forests were founded the same arguments were made against having them. A property owner should be able to do whatever it wants to do with their property. But even as a property rights advocate, do you really believe that? Do you believe they should be allowed to pollute the creek that runs through their property? Have a factory in a neighborhood of homes? Kill off an endangered species? The scary thought I have is that, yes, you do. You think that corporations that have enough money to buy up our historic neighborhoods do have the right to tear them down and make a quick profit off of our local history and quality architecture. Just like corporations do when they overfish the oceans, tear down forests, and drill for oil, despite the fact that those of us in those communities have to pay the long term cost of their short term plundering. There are shared resources that we all need and should have a right to. Clean air, clean water, healthy ecosystems, and for those of us that live in cities or that would like to visit other cities, our historic neighborhoods.

Freud didn't know everything. In fact he was incorrect about many assumptions he had. We don't need Psychology for every moment. It has it's purpose but also limits.
