The earliest evidence of human activity in Stalybridge is a flint scraper from the late Neolithic/early Bronze Age. Also bearing testament to the presence of man in prehistory are the Stalybridge cairns. The two monuments are on the summit of Hollingworthall Moor 153 yards (140 m) apart. One of the round cairns is the best-preserved Bronze Age monument in Tameside, and is protected as a scheduled monument. A branch of the Roman road between the forts at Manchester (Mamucium) and Melandra Castle (Ardotalia) is thought to run through Stalybridge to the fort of Castleshaw.
River Tame flowing under Staley Bridge, constructed in 1707
The settlement was originally called Stavelegh, which derives from the Old English staef leah, meaning "wood where the staves are got". The medieval Lords of the manor took de Stavelegh as their name, later becoming Stayley or Staley. The lordship of Longdendale was one of the ancient feudal estates of Cheshire and included the area of Stalybridge. Buckton Castle, near Stalybridge, was probably built by one of the earls of Chester in the 12th century. William de Neville was the first lord of Longdendale, appointed by the Earl of Chester between 1162 and 1186.[10] The lordship of Longdendale included the manors of Staley, Godley, Hattersley, Hollingworth, Matley, Mottram, Newton, Tintwistle and Werneth; the manor of Staley was first mentioned between 1211 and 1225.
The first records of the de Stavelegh family as Lords of the Manor of Staley date from the early 13th century. Staley Hall was their residence. The present hall was built in the late 16th century on the same site as an earlier hall of the Stayley family which dated from before 1343.
Sir Ralph Staley (descendant of the de Stavelegh family) had no male heirs but an only daughter, Elizabeth Staley, who married Sir Thomas Assheton and united the manors of Ashton and Staley. Elizabeth and Thomas had two daughters and no sons. Margaret, the eldest of their two daughters, married Sir William Booth of Dunham Massey. The younger daughter Elizabeth was widowed and without children, and continued to live at Staley Hall until her death in 1553. In her will her share of the lordships of Staley and Ashton were left to the Booths.
The manor of Staley remained in the possession of the Booth family until the death of George Booth, 2nd Earl of Warrington on 2 August 1758. Upon his death, the Earldom of Warrington became extinct. His only daughter, Lady Mary Booth, the wife of Harry Grey, 4th Earl of Stamford, inherited all the Booth estates. The manor of Staley was owned by the Grey family until the extinction of the Earldom of Stampford on the death of Roger Grey, 10th Earl of Stamford in 1976. At this point, the family estates were dispersed. Stamford Street, Grey Street, Groby Street, Stamford Park, Stamford Golf Club and the two Stamford Arms public houses in Stalybridge are all named after the Grey family.

Being a bridgelad everything you've said about the place is spot on. Breaks my heart seeing what's happened to the place we need to get back to how it was. A gorgeous little market town.

Thank you for this Vlog. It brought back many memories of my childhood, growing up here. I went to Christchurch School and later to Hob Hill school, just down the road from it. We lived on Stamford Estate when it was new and I often walked these streets to school and home again. Sometimes I would also go the other way, down Bayley Street with its industrial feel. I recall the canal changing colours with dye from the clothing mills. Though I left it in 1963, I remember it well, particularly that cold winter. At nine years old I wasn’t allowed long pants and my knees resented it bitterly. The Victoria Market at Christmas time with its big tree was wonderful, the Railway Station with the same platform clock. Somewhere near the two ‘Guinness Book Of Records’ pubs used to be an indoor skating rink. This was where I first heard Hank Marvin playing Apache over the loud speakers. Wonderful ! Stalybridge was a thriving little town back then and I don’t recall any vacant shops. One summer I almost got caught pinching apples in Stamford Park ! But I wasn’t a bad lad, I think that was my only misdemeanour. It’s awful to see the old town in such despair. All this time later, I still have a fondness for the old place. Great Vlog, and thank you again. From Australia.

Only just seen this video as it was suggested to me by the KZbin algorithm. I used to work in Stalybridge around 1988 & 1989 at a record and computer game shop opposite the indoor market (on Trinity Street), a place called Soundtracks, along with the owner, my boss and a great guy called Dave Bamford. I miss those days! Great video, good memories!

9.38...the grey pub on the River (Melbourne St). 2008, on a very cold post Christmas Sunday, I had a pint and a chat to the young publican. A pilgrimage from Melbourne, Australia to the bar that my Great Grandad owned in the day. Was called ‘H2O Bar’ when I went...used to be ‘The Commercial’. I noticed the facade had a nice facelift recently 🙂 Story was, GGdad ran a cotton mill/owned the pub. My GGma passed away, and William Henry Hatton’s dad remarried....Bill didn’t get along with the step-Mum, so decided to take a passenger ship to Australia. Worked tobacco fields in central Victoria, eventually settling down with a wife in South Melbourne, running ‘Hatton’s Sponge Kitchen’ during the day, and playing piano in his trio many nights. I’ll be back to Stalybridge one day. Much to research 🙂

Good video In my opinion Stalybridge was slowly declining but the building of Tesco and KwikSave which is now Aldi killed it off Hopefully the new plans that Tameside keep taunting for Stalybridge will change it for the good and I totally agree with you about the market being farmers market You have a new subscriber 👍🏻

This is great. I grew up in Stalybridge and spent my youth skating and drinking in the town. Lovely place, no idea why it didn't explode after the regen in the 90s. I can't wait for the next vlogs in the series. I would love a vlog on the awesome waterworks engineering around Dovestones and Chew.

Many thanks - I was born and lived in Stalybridge but now live in Hampshire and dont get back much. It was lovely to see the place and how it has changed. Just so you know for some unknown reason some of the video the shop names were reversed? That said it was very good to see my home town again, thank you.

Loved watching this Chris. Keep up with the vlogs as you're a natural at it. Loved to hear your positive attitude towards Stalybridge's potential. Why don't you run for council yourself? They need more people with vision and creativity.

It was much better when Stalybridge was actually run by it’s own unpaid council and councillors. It went downhill soon after it became part of Tameside run by paid councillors in nearby Ashton who tended to be from the Manchester side of area. In my opinion Stalybridge was quickly relegated to the poor relation of Tameside yet Council Tax remains unfairly high.
