My husband and I are working to create our impressions for the Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA), as we joined the society in the summer of 2023. My husband has chosen to be French Norman in the 12th century for his base impression, and therefore I want to make him garments to go along with that. I have made him a very basic tunic of gray wool, and now I want to make him a fancy tunic, dare I say royally inspired tunic, for feats, balls, courts, etc.
There are not many garments that have survived from the 12th century, let alone specifically French Norman ones. Therefore, I have drawn on resources that have survived, are close to what I am looking for, and made my own conclusions supported by research.
My first and main point of reference for creating this tunic is the Die blaue Tunicella (Dalmatika) (translated to English as the Blue Tunicella) currently held at the Imperial Treasury Vienna in Vienna, Austria. The museum states that this tunic has the shape of a dalmatica, which they define as “a loose unbelted garment with full sleeves.” It was the created in 1133/34 for the coronation tunic of Roger II of Sicily, a Norman king.
I began working on this garment in the December of 2023 and entered it into my first SCA Arts and Science competition, Stella Nova, in January of 2024. I plan on entering this project into a couple of more Arts and Science Fairs with some modifications.
