yupp...just watched Green Book on Netflix last night and now busy rabbit-holing my way into Doc Shirley, Tony 'Lip' Vallelonga... and his son Nick Vallelonga. From one small - but great - acorn, several branches of imaginative talent grow?

I just had rhe chance of coming across the movie the Green Book and all I’ve got to say is WOW! I’m both sad and extremely happy to have discovered Don Shirley’s music. Such an amazing talent. So thankful for his tenacity to continue on to share his gifts with is despite being treated in such an uncivilized savage manner. I pray we can continue as a society to understand the gifts and value of every single human sole and what they can contribute to is all! Am seriously looking forward to the adventure of exploring all of what Dr. Shirley contributed to the human experience. Bravo to him 👏👏👏

Just the opening few notes punched air out of lungs. I play the piano (poorly) so I can tell that was unmistakable mastery. He was amazing, wish we had more live footage of his😢

Other pianists work so visibly hard to squeeze brilliance out of their Instrument. But Shirley is effortless. He is absolutely one unity with the piano. Like some rare football players with the ball.

When I listen to this music I hear classical influences such as Schubert's Wandererer's Nightsong. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJzGhp-shZp-jqdm5 as well as Gospel, blues, american song. I also wonder if Dr. John listened to much of Shirley's music because it sure sounds like it.
