I had the luck of meeting him when I was 19 years old. I told him how much his music impacted my childhood (born in’82 so a bit late!) and my bond with my dad, and he was so sincere and genuine. He signed my album I carried around with me, and I stepped into his trailer and gave him a wholesome hug. I will never EVER forget that. ❤

I was close friends with Gregg in the late 80s. I could write a book on some of the shit we did back then. Got a bunch of photos. A bunch of stories. He was the greatest friend you could ask for. He told me once, Do you know why I like you? It's because you don't ever want anything from me. I never wrote any of our stories. I've told a couple here and there but I always hesitated writing out of respect to his privacy. I live in the Daytona area. He was a great friend and a great soul. I guess you could say, I was that fly on the wall. Lol

So, I am 70 years old. In 1970, I was just about done drinking. Quit in 1973, nothing since. BUT before that, had 8 DUI's, numerous arrests for distribution etc. One night I went with a couple buddies of mine to a bar on Hertel Avenue in Buffalo. They had live music. Fully jammed, there were 300 people in there. I'm sitting at the bar, one of those old wood bars with a rolled edge to lean on as you sat on your swivel stool. Open stool to my left and right suddenly became occupied by Gregg and Duane. I had heard of them, but not much. We did about 3 shots of Jack Daniels and drafts each. They were in Buffalo to visit a guy I kinda knew...Brent James I think. He did custom Harley paint. Then they were headed to N.Y. to do a show at the Fillmore. They did a short show at this bar....Alliota's. The owner, (Alliota) refused to pay them the $250 he had promised for their performance, and their road manager ended up shooting and killing him. I see people here saying that they think Gregg was a true southern gentleman. I only know him from the words he has written (I'm sure I know every one). I do know that he and I have been down many of the same roads. Encountered the same crossroads. The songs he and Betts and Duanne wrote have been inspirational for me my whole life. He was a good man.

I knew Gregg for a period of time around 1979….was not a groupie- everything you all have said about his calm, kind, gentlemanly nature rings true. He was in the midst of breaking up with Cher and having a bit of a rough time. All he wanted was to get a boat/live on it off of the Savannah coast, go fishing and live a quiet, peaceful life. He eventually did live in Savannah and was married to a really good woman. He never got over losing Duane.
