In my head canon for the Joes the Red Shadows are to blame for any weird or sci fi elements. In my joeverse the Baron Ironblood and his minions really got started in the 1950s and were destroyed in the mid 60's. Weird nanites? Skeletron. Compound-Z? Degraded versions of the chemicals that Ironblood used to brainwash his troops. B.A.T.s? Derived from the Mutons. Also, the Coil is dedicated to the Lovecraftian god Set and Cobra-la is inhabited by his chosen people, the serpent men.
