Description: Turtles play positive roles in the folklore of many Native American tribes. In the creation myths of some East Coast tribes (such as the Iroquois and Lenape), the Great Spirit created their homeland by placing earth on the back of a giant turtle. This is why some contemporary Native Americans refer to North America by the name "Turtle Island." Turtles are a symbol of the earth in many different Native cultures. To Plains Indians, turtles are associated with long life, protection, and fertility. In some Plains tribes, a newborn girl's umbilical cord was sewn into a figure in the shape of a turtle to ensure her health and safety. In other tribes, turtles are often associated with healing, wisdom, and spirituality.

I would love to know what the world would be like if European colonialism never took place. The world, especially America may not be as mixed, but so many native cultures would’ve been able to flourish and advance into who knows what today. Beautiful book!

Randomuser 549 they didn’t use wagons, so they would’ve never made it far huh? Couldn’t possibly advance without it?

I mean, Europe, Eastern Asia and parts of the Middle East were the only civilizations to have ever made any real technological advancements. If left completely alone and with them not having any idea of the surrounding world they would most likely look pretty similar to what they did a couple hundred years ago. I’m not trying to be racist, I’m just stating facts, very interesting cultures nonetheless.
5 жыл бұрын
No, the cultures wouldn't have advanced, just like they hadn't advanced up until the point of meeting the Europeans. They simply did not have the animals or resources availible to be able to advance as far as Europe and Asia did.
@captaincat8740
@captaincat8740 5 жыл бұрын
I think their communal, sustainable lifestyle without the wheel, in harmony with nature and less individualistic and depressed, might be preferable to the benefits of the wheel and its various offshoots :) I suppose it's about how we define "advanced". The European settlers may have been more technologically advanced, sure. But morally advanced? Spiritually advanced? More advanced in ways of living that support human flourishing? Not so sure.
@captaincat8740
@captaincat8740 5 жыл бұрын
For example, those living in hunter gatherer lifestyles rely on kinship networks, sharing, and reciprical altruism to survive. Whereas we are trained in consuming, hoarding and protecting our private property. The difference in ways of interacting were stark when Columbus first arrived. He was stunned that the Native Americans were so kind and supportive to strangers, genuinely baffled that they had not "advanced" to a more cunning and selfish stage like the Europeans. He wrote in his diary in April 1493, ""they are artless and generous with what they have, to such a degree as no one would believe but him who had seen it. Of anything they have, if it be asked for, they never say no, but do rather invite the person to accept it, and show as much lovingness as though they would give their hearts." Having equated "lovingness" and generosity in a culture as "artless" not advanced, he then wrote, ""They should be good servants..." Of course, there is violence and war in all human cultures, but this European/Native American encounter shows a huge divide in understanding of collaboration, sharing and the sustainability of reciprocal altruism. So let's be careful when we throw around words like "advanced" in relation to different cultures solely based on technological advancement.

yes! Yet another Go-to video of yours! This is incredibly relaxing.. the light light background music, the sounds from the old library book. And your deep voice, the pace.. Listened to it twice already, but still can’t tell what it is about really (except what I read from the title) because it’s such an efficient sleep aid! Love the way you let me doze off and eventually wake up somewhere near the end of the video and make me wonder for how long I’ve been away.. LOL. thanks for this ASMR masterpiece! and congrats on 25k:D

Don’t be afraid to insert 5 seconds of silence from time to time. Just enough where if you’re not looking at the screen you wonder if it’s over and right the you start talking again. Check out dan jones prince story, he does that from time to time and it works well. A lot of times I drift off during those.

Thunder Melo the nations that invoke and preach the Bible control most of the world. The main reasons these are myths is because all the people who followed them were victims of genocide and are dead. A progressive culture/society respects all religions. So as long as there are a lot of Christians going to church they will never be taught as myths.

Except that we’re not at all related to them, the first contact with people from other places in the world that Native Americans made was with those people that travelled from Europe

@@thatguywithahorsehead8319 native Americans are Paleo-Indians, they crossed the Berring Straight and migrated into America hundreds of thousands of years ago. These Paleo-Indians are descendents of Asians, which is the continent from which they crossed from. This is far, far before any European colonisation in the 15th and 16th centuries. Native Americans are genetically most similar to Asians.
