Before the Narcos series, I never really knew just how powerful Pablo Escobar really was. So, imagine my surprise when I found out he was once one of the richest men in the world, and he tried to be involved in the Colombian Government, while running his billion dollar illegal drug operation.

The biggest mistake the show did was condensing too much of Pablo's life in season 1. Season 1 condenses 20 years into 10 episodes; while season 2 condenses 4 years into 10 episodes. I almost felt season 2 was just filler because Pablo really did not do much in season 2 after escaping from jail. I think the producers were not sure if the show was going to be a success, so wanted to get Pablo's most historical actions told in case the show was not a hit and got cancelled. The show would have been better if it had told Pablo's life over the course of 3 seasons. Pablo becomes a billionaire in what? One episode during a montage? Drag it out over a few episodes to explain better.

An extra season with Pablo would have been great; if let's say Season 1 had ended with Pablo being elected to congress, the peak of his power. And just have all of Season 2 Pablo fighting the gov, and end with him winning again with gove agreeing to build the jail for him. Start season 3 with Pablo in the Cathedral (Pablo was in jail for almost 2 years) and finish his story with 30 episodes total. They can add more characters and storylines they cut for time.

I think one thing you should've mentioned, is that in its natural form coca is harmless and is actually really important to indigenous communities in the Andes. I grew up drinking coca tea and using it in ceremonies to pachamamita. I was always frustrated about all the jokes made about coca and trust me a lot of us are angry and frustrated of the immense legacy the drug cartels have left us with. Now we have to fight and constantly remind people of the natural uses of coca and as a result most coca farmers (most of whom are indigenous) have to suffer an additional stigma (aside from dealing with racism) of being labeled as "narcos" when in reality so many of us don't use it for that.

That probably falls outside the scope of this history video. But in retrospect, it would have been great if the actual show had mentioned that. They gloss over the plant and its natural uses, instead focusing on how it is processed from the start. I'm not even sure we ever see a coca plantation in the first season. Narcos: Mexico puts a heavier focus on the growers, but that part of the show focuses on cannabis growers.

A very important fact that is hardly ever mentioned in any series or movie about Escobar, is his close affiliation with a colombian politician named Alberto Santofimio. This man had A LOT of influence in many of Escobar's decisions, including the assasination of presidencial candidate Luis Carlos Galán. In case you are wondering what happened to this politician, well.. he went to prision for a short period of time and nowadays he is enjoying freedom surrounded by many friends, and his political influence and succesors are still wreacking havoc in a central region of Colombia named Tolima, where he made his career. He still denies his affiliation with Escobar to this day; but for any colombian who knows his history, that is like deniying the holocaust.

Portuguese is not too different from Spanish and many Italians, Portuguese actors/singers are bilingual and do work in Spanish since the market is bigger .

​@@anaz5918 Brazilian here. Wagner knew very little Spanish before the role and spent 3 months in Colombia learning Spanish in preparation. And while the two languages are similar enough that we can sorta understand each other, there is a difference between gleaming the meaning of a sentence and actually speaking with Spanish phonetics. For English natives, it's kind of the difference between being able to understand German words in writing and actually pronouncing them, ya know? So yeah, learning Spanish to play Pablo was definitely a lot of work, even if knowing Portuguese made it a little easier.

@@Yodah97 I’m Mexican I speak fluent English and Spanish and growing up in Mexico as a kid I remember watching Portuguese/Italian singers in both languages like Xuxa and I disagree I have a Brazilian friend who learn Spanish in a few months without going to school, I learn English in six months and I’m sure if I was to moved for a few months to Brazil or Italy I would learn the language very quickly since I can understand Italian and Portuguese even though I have never study those languages. Many actors sometimes get roles in other languages they don’t speak and they do fine by working with speech and language experts and they usually just memorize their lines .

US State Department and the Pentagon trained Latin American armies in counter insurgence in the 70''s in the Schools of Americas in Panama. Part of that training was in torture. DEA agents claiming they didn't see anything or were surprise about the use of torture is a ridiculous claim. Colombia to this day is the main violator of human rights in Latin America.

DEA was working with the Embassy, the Embassy perfectly knew what was happening in Colombia because they were promoting human right atrocities in that country. Check what Plan Condor was in the region. If you think USA are the 'good guys' in any history of Latin America you're not doing history, you're doing propaganda (not you personally, of course).

Any chance for a video on the "Gentlemen of Cali" from Narcos Season 3 ? Obviously, everybody talks about Pablo, but these guys were something else. They use to run their organisation like a multi-national company and at one point, controlled 90% of the global cocaine trade. The Cali Cartel even had their own "intelligence service", which was gathering "dirt" on people of interest for future blackmail. It is said, that if cocaine was legal, the Cali cartel would have been in the Forbes Top-5 most valuable brands list.

@@olddog476 You’re right. I think the Pacho and the Cielos guy were portrayed in an especially good light. But overall you see this more as the drama and damage among each other than how devastating it was for the public. Coming on the heels of the atrocities against humanity that Pablo did in the previous seasons, by comparison these guys are seen as reasonable and less ruthless. So I think the show should have worked harder to not let the audience forget their crimes and to reflect the negative and lasting impact of their legacy on the Colombian people

i've talked to friends about that movie, and apparently (idk their much more knowledgable on that history then me) it was pretty inaccurate with the framing of Turing as the sole drive for the cracking of Enigma, and not the other 9,000+ people working at Bletchley Park, but regardless would love to hear his thoughts on Turing's life

@@MossFauna Turing was the advocate for the machine, also known as the bomb. The movie centers on Turing and the machine. Yes, they bury the other efforts or give only a nod to them, but you also don't tend to idolize the guy who finishes the race 3rd

They did Turing wrong in that movie. From real-life accounts, he was a pleasant fellow who outside of being one of the pioneers of computer science, also worked in the earliest stages of AI theory and was an Olympic level athelete. Instead, the movie gave us a poor copy of Cumberbatch's generic jerkass genius role that he did in Sherlock. Whether that was a reimagining or mangling of the character is up to debate and new approaches are understandable, but Turing is a real life character and deserves better than what is provided here, especially when the real life story is far more interesting. If you want a good story of a genius, try "The man who knew infinity". It manages to make Math interesting!

I really think you should do a piece on "Cromwell" A 1979 Movie Starring Richard Harris (Who steals the show) and Alec Guinness, set during the English Civil War. Interesting to note that Harris' role as Cromwell was the role of his own people's persecution. I'd love to know more about why he took the role. Especially since Cromwell himself is the protagonist. It's full of great political dialogue and historical details which shaped the future of England pre-colonialism. And Post-colonialism! As well as fantastic "chess-move" dialogue. Both give great performances and are the centre of the drama. Would love to see a History Buffs on it! Alec Guinness' elocution is absolutely top-notch, also. I'd also like to hear the effect of this movie upon the English people during its release, as an Irish person, we don't really like Cromwell due to the persecution, yet British people seem to like him.

I read somewhere that it was somewhat controversial the accents, and I totally understand why, is very distracting when you hear Colombians talk like Chileans, Mexicans and your lead sounds Brazilian and gringo at the same time.

Speaking as an Amercian, most non-Hispanics up here probably can't differentiate between the various accents. Where I live in the Southeast there are Guatemalans, Mexicans, Cubans, and Brazilians. Most people can't even tell the difference between Spanish and Portuguese let alone regional accents. But I imagine as a Latin American or hell, even just a Spanish speaker it would be distracting as shit

But just to make some comparison it would be like making a bio about some Texan figure with a thick accent and he sounds like a British. Something like that would be very distracting.

Yeah the Spanish in the show was all over the place. And there are a loooot of long scenes that are all in Spanish. And honestly, I don't think anyone would have noticed or cared if they did the whole show in English. All we'd really lose are the few scenes early on where Murphy is affected by the language barrier.

As a mexican you have no idea how much these narco series piss me off, and im very thankful that you're shedding some light on what these people were really like, a lot of people romanticize narcos even in México and Colombia, they weren't cool or badass, they're murderers, kidnappers, extortionists and rapist, they know what propaganda is and exploit it, they use these shows to win hearts and minds and use the local support to destroy more lives, its a lot like how pirates are remembered as adventures instead of thieves and killers, but thanks to these shows, narco corridos and social media that romanticism only took decades to come in instead of centuries

that's what I like about Narcos, it really shows them as garbage human beings, one of the things I like about Pablo's portrayal in Narcos is that he's portrayed in his more quiet times as a resentful, hateful junkie who can't stop smoking weed, and in his loneliest times he's his most wicked and evil. Also there's a scene in the shower where he basically has his whole omnipotent image destroyed, he's painted like a regular guy who did so much evil and caused so much pain you kind of wonder how he wasn't killed before... and then the show puts in front of you all of the corruption in the governments that are supposed to be capturing him.

@@StefanoFierros i only watched a few episodes of the mexico seasons, and im glad they're not showing them as heroes but there are definitely a lot of scenes trying to make you empathize with or like these people, there's also a few times where they do show what bastards they were but i still think it contributes to their propaganda of being rags to riches heroes of the people, but i believe you that the Colombian seasons might be different, here's hoping

@@ulisesguzman8574 Mexico goes a little bit on that rags to riches story (which, in a way they are all more self-made than all of the heroes capitalism sells us) but it closes neatly in season 3 when Amado Carrillo says something like "if money is good, look to whom god gives it to" there's only like two of them that are portrayed that way btw, Pablo Acosta and Carrillo

@@ulisesguzman8574 My biggest critique on Narcos is also they romanticise Escobar too much. He is portrayed as a somewhat caring and loyal husband, but in reality he cheated constantly with young girls and in case of getting pregnant, he executed them.

I prefer Pedro. I was getting soooo tired of this American who couldn't understand Spanish and seemed less important in the plot than other characters narrating everything. I think the plot did him dirty because I couldn't care that much about him as a person even with all his screen time. The part I did love was his narration near the end of S2Ep10 for obvious reasons.
