"I don't know, I guess it's a Colombian thing..." Yes it is... lol There is a serious Colombian mentality that says "If you kill the father, you beter kill the sons, because they will kill you..." Regardless of whether or not you love your father, the expectation is you will avenge him. My dad's uncle was killed in an attempted kidnapping by a local gang in Bogota about 30 years ago. And while no one told me exactly what happened, I was told in a round about way that his family used its money and power to find the killers and deal with them, because that what was expected and necessary.

Even the quote from the book you mentioned about the AUC's doesn't cover their whole brutality. They would cut open pregnant women and put live cats inside their bellies and sow them back up while the woman was still alive untill she bled to death from the cat scratching it's way out, and a lot of these paramilitary groups in Colombia that commited such unimaginalble horrors were being armed and funded by the Colombian and American governments. The war on drugs and the armed conflict in Colombia has forever changed my country and are still huge unsolved issues today. I'm really happy you're helping bring light to all the history and context that has gone into this series and all the suffering. Much love from Bogotá x

A correction: while in Colombia there have been paramilitary groups since the late 70's (some historians even consider a precedent in the 50's, with the creation of death squads acting in behalf of the government, which, depending on the region in which they operated, received different names: Chulavitas [Boyacá, Cundinamarca, Tolima], Aplanchadores [Antioquia], Penca Ancha [Sucre's plains] or Pájaros [Valle del Cauca]), the Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia, AUC, as such, were formed in 1997, almost 5 years after Escobar was killed. Though Carlos Castaño, indeed, was active as a paramilitary commander in the early 90's, but leading, alongside his brother Fidel Castaño, another group: Autodefensas Campesinas de Córdoba y Urabá (Peasant self-defense forces of Córdoba and Urabá).

@@MrHEC381991 while I disagree with Facism and Nazi beliefs, I see any man who is willing to put their lives on the line for the lives of their countrymen as Heroism. I'm surprised about the fact-checking here is oftentimes based on the word of the son of Escobar, based on his vague memories from a turbulent childhood, a son who clearly glorifies his father and portrays him in the most positivie and humane angle possible. And that is how we know some event was true or false? I'm amazed how the fact-checking concept has degenerated over the last 5-10 years.

@@saviet4222 I don't think so. What about police reports, snitches, undercover cops, Columbian press, witnesses, etc? None of them are 100% reliable obviously, but together they would be way more credible than one person's vague childhood memories, about his "glorified and amazing daddy". I'm a bit disappointed with History Buffs in this, I though he'd have at least made it clear that his main fact-checking reference is extremely unreliable in Narcos.

I'd rather just read the book because this Netflix adaptation looks to be very dramatized. The characters look so intense all the time and Pablo's voice sounds obviously bass boosted. For me personally, overly dramatic true crime series like Ozark or this fall a bit flat. It's getting kind of stale when it's only serious and scary all the time.

imo ofc

You'd have to read multiple books since this isn't just based around "Killing Pablo" but "Manhunters" as well. I would say the show is dramatized but not "overly dramatized". People like it because it's authentic. Only thing one can really complain about is Pablo's actor's lack of a true Colombian accent. But you would only notice that if you were South American and all the other authentic Colombian actors seems to balance it out. The acting is very good and the dialogue isn't cheesy like it is with many other crime shows.

Oh, I believe they were holding back on some things. In Schindler's List, there was a colonel I think they scaled back on some of the things he did because of a fear of him looking too cartoon villainy to be believable. Speaking of, I wonder if you'd touch on Schindler's List. Then again, the subject matter is more than likely too much for many to handle. Probably why I've only seen the movie once, yet it still sticks with me in gruesome detail...

You’re thinking of Amon Goeth, who was even too sadistic for the SS, and actually terrified some Holocaust survivors because in the movie the actor who played him looked EXACTLY like him
