Great video but you forgot to mention why they were called sharpshooters. The name came from the sharps rifle. If i remember correctly the sharps rifle used a bullet (not a ball like muskets) and was rifled thats y it was so accurate at long ranges.
@ryanlane4282
@ryanlane4282 2 жыл бұрын
Incorrect. While the Sharps rifle was a very accurate rifle commonly used by marksmen and sharpshooters, the term “sharpshooter” predates the rifle by over a century. The name of the rifle is just a coincidence.

2:30 Imagine the PTSD in todays military if soldiers had to scalp every enemy they killed to collect a bounty. There would be a market for soldiers that did not want to do it to hire those that did not care or even enjoyed it.
@seanbautista2606
@seanbautista2606 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think that was a problem in those times. The warriors had a lot of hatred for their enemy because they saw how brutal the enemy was. The scalps were payback for the Indians and French murdering villagers and decorating the trees with their entrails.

Ive always wondered the same, I know there's been ptsd in literally every conflict going back to the start of the human race. Ive just always wondered if the fact that we've gotten smarter mentally over time and progressivism has led to ptsd becoming worse and worse over the years. Each generation is getting more advanced from the last leading in humanity becoming smarter and using our brains in a higher capacity and levels of functioning therefore we've become so advanced and able to understand the mental trauma we've encountered over the years.

First of all, that would be a grievous violation of Geneva conventions. Article 4, 34. Rule 113. Second, what a complete waste of time and resources. Nobody wants to stick around on a battlefield longer than necessary, except for the truly sociopaths. They are as much a danger to their own unit as much as the opfor. There is a reason military personal are paid by salary and not "confirmed kills".
@thepsychicspoon5984
@thepsychicspoon5984 2 жыл бұрын
@@scottyweimuller6152 There has been studies and research that strongly suggest that yes it has. This can be attributed to multiple things, but I will say just the top two for space. A huge contributing factor is because in modern civilization the mortality rate is not as high as say the times of the Roman empire. Death was seen even more natural than today. Today modern medicine has brought life expectancy to unprecedented heights. Even the probability of death on the battlefield is much lower. So much so we have inadvertently created a society that has become thanatophobic(fear of death) for the most part. Secondly, combat today is way different than combat back then. A Roman soldier for example, when he saw combat he more than likely participated in 2 groups of pre-planned battle lines coming near each other. He is literally faceing his enemy face to face and can survive using individual skills(Im not saying modern soldiers don't have skills, but its a different skill set). Compare a Roman soldier to a WW1 soldier. Here is a soldier whose death can at any moment in time, whether he is eating, sleeping, reliving himself, or writing letters. In a warzone like that death is so much more sudden than ancient times. In that war its estimated that 75% of all comabt casualties was via artillery. How can you defend yourself against an enemy that is lobbing artillery shell, after shell from KM away? There is no skill that you can use to defend yourself aside from taking whatever cover you can find and waiting it out. Knowing that if your going to come out unharmed, your fate is tied to probability and not by your own hands.

A slight correction, Rogers Rangers wouldn’t not have been using rifles, they’d have been using Muskets. The major difference being the type of projectiles fired out of them and the smooth bore of a musket, whereas a rifle will have a spiral groove cut down the length of it. This spins the projectile and increases range and accuracy.

I get what you’re saying but in WW2 we went to Germany…. You gonna try to tell me they weren’t the enemy? I understand your feelings may be hurt but the context he’s speaking in is a war. To both sides, the other side is an enemy. It’s like sports, the away team is considered “the opposing team” of the home team, and the home team is the “opposing team” of the away team. The only negative connotation that comes with the word enemy is one that you give it. Everyone has enemies regardless of which side is right or wrong.

How'd the the civil war snipers fire with accuracy, let alone precision, with rifles notorious for almost literally not hitting the broad side of barn ?
