History: Indonesia at the 1938 World Cup
According to official FIFA records, Indonesia became the first Asian team to participate in the World Cup. This happened at the 1938 World Cup in France, when Indonesia competed under the name Dutch East Indies.
In late January 2018, FIFA recognized that the Dutch East Indies national team that played in the 1938 World Cup was actually the Indonesian national team. They also confirmed that Indonesia was the first Asian team to appear in the World Cup.
The Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) football team traveled for days by ship to reach France. However, the long journey did not bear positive fruit as Indonesia lost its first match against Hungary by a score of 6-0. The knockout system at the time meant that this was the only match Indonesia ever played in the World Cup.
