The oldest records speak of a country called Caucasian Albania in the south. The northern parts were a confederation of pagan tribes. In the first century AD. Caucasian Albania ruled today's Azerbaijan. They fought the Romans and Persians and converted to Christianity early on. The territory of this country is today the territory of the Russian Republic of Dagestan. Albania in the Caucasus was located on the eastern slopes of that mountain to the Caspian Sea, the province of Shirvan, modern Azerbaijan and Dagestan. To the north of Albania was the land of the Alans, to the north-west were the Iberians, and to the west and south of the Kur river were the Armenians. There was a city called Albana on the coast of the Caspian Sea between the modern cities of Divichi and Derbent. After the name of this city, the country in its hinterland was named Albania. Becker says: "There is another Albania (modern Dagestan) in the Caucasus, and some writers consider its inhabitants to be the same people as their namesakes in Turkey." In the 8th century, the Arabs occupied the lands around the Caspian Sea and beyond the Caucasus. With this conquest, the Caliphate came into conflict with the Khazars. The Arabs were the protectors of Islam, and the Khazars of the faith of Moses, so the conflict, in addition to others, also had a religious character. The Khazars imposed a very heavy tribute on the Albanians, so they sided with the Arabs and most of them converted to Islam. Khazar's son Barjil was the Khazarian warlord in the wars with the Arabs. When he entered Albania with his army in 730, he ordered that only Muslims be killed. That order of Barjil made the Albanians flee and seek refuge with the Arabs. During that time, heavy battles were fought on the Mediterranean Sea between the Arabs, as representatives of Islam, and the Romans (Byzantine Empire), as representatives of Christianity. The Arabs seized from Romei a large part of Sicily and a part of southern Italy, so in order to strengthen the Islamic population in these countries, they brought a part of the population from Caucasian Albania, which escaped before the Khazars. The battles between the Arabs and the Romans in Sicily lasted for a long time and in the period 827-878, Sicily was divided into two parts, Islamic and Christian, hence the name Two Sicilies. In 970, the Romans managed to conquer the Islamic part and took over the Albanians in that area. They converted a part of this people to Christianity. In the 20s of the 11th century, the Byzantine Emperor Basil II occupied New Epirus, which is approximately the territory of modern Albania, where Serbs and some Greeks lived. One of the Byzantine military leaders, named Tihomir the Serb from Belgrade, started an uprising in 1040 with the intention of expelling the Byzantine rule from New Epirus. Tihomir's insurgents were all Serbs, and with the help of Serbia, they expelled the Byzantines from New Epirus. Because of this, the Byzantine empress Zoe and her third husband Constantine IX Monomachus sent a large army to attack Serbia in the fall of 1042. The direction of the attack went through Epirus in modern Albania, which was then for the most part the territory of Serbia. The then young Serbian king Dobroslav I Vojislav and his sons defeated the Byzantine army of 70,000 soldiers led by Duke Mihailo, prefect of Drački. This heavy defeat in the war with Serbia caused riots and revolts in Byzantium. One of the rebels was a Byzantine military commander in Sicily named Georgius, also known as Maniac. Having been removed from office without reason, he decided to rebel and went to take power in Constantinople. He embarked his army from Sicily and southern Italy and a part of the Albanians he took with him as auxiliary companies. Albanians took their wives and children as was customary at that time. With that army, he landed in Durres in March 1043. The Byzantine historian and witness to these events, Mihael Attaliota, testifies about these events in the work Historia, Corpus scriptorum Historae. As Serbia was then in a state of war with Byzantium, Manijak counted on certain Serbian sympathies. In the battles with the imperial army near Doriano, the Sicilian duke was killed and his enterprise failed. The Albanians could not return to Sicily, nor could they stay in Byzantine territory, so they sought to settle in Duklja (Montenegro). Prince Vojislav allowed them to settle in a sparsely populated hilly area in the vicinity of Raban, east of Kruja.@@shabagge

Well the maps that you find probably in youtube aren't accurate as you think . Albania was bigger ethnically in 13th but the misunderstand that happens a lot is the skanderbeg time .people think that Albania was smaller that albania that is it today but the truth is that its only the League of Lezha and not the whole state ethnically. Not very accurate: Corfu island was never albanian and Janina/Epirus region neither because it belonged to the ottoman empire. So correct the map.
