_ Of course Shi Huangdi was paranoid: He spent his childhood as a hostage in an enemy kingdom, after he was rescue he spent his time in the court fighting with his brother for the throne, after he was crowned(at 13) his MOTHER tried to assassinate him to put her lover and their sons on the throne, then his chancellor(also his mom's lover, there are rumors that this guy is his real father not the previous King) tried to overthrown him, when he started to conquer the other state they also sent assassins,... If he wasn't paranoid, he would have been dead at age 5 _ And before DNA testing, NOBODY beside the mothers can tell who's the father of their child is(the real reason why women are discouraged to go outside unless necessary to avoid contact with other men) + there are way too many concubines in the royal palace to keep track of -> They used eunuchs as servants in the inner palace. Fun fact: Lao Ai (the lover of Shi Huangdi's mother) was a fake eunuch famous for his dong(so big & strong that it can fit through the central hole of a wooden wheel and dance without the weight pulling his dong down)
@MegaMerlin20114 жыл бұрын
To clarify, Li Si was his mom's first lover (and possibly the biological father of the emperor since he still had his junk), and then Li Si didn't want it to be too obvious he's working with the Queen so he brought in an assistant that is in service of the queen (who slept with the queen and became her other lover). So, essentially, his mom had 2 lovers.

@@kw-zy6mb Shi Huangdi's father Ying Yiren was the original hostage(he was the son of the crown prince with an unimportant concubine) he married Zhao Ji and gave birth to Shi Huangdi while he was the hostage, they rescued him (he was adopted by the childless main wife of his father to maintain her power after his father die at Lu Bu Wei advise-> he suddenly became important)but couldn't save his wife & son, due to various factors he couldn't go back to save them immediately, until his grandfather & father(reigned for 1 year) finally died and Ying Yiren became King Zhuangxiang of Qin that his wife and son was rescued

History fan, studied East Asia, and self studied China as well as currently living/working in China. I want to toss some clarity into the mix. What we know about ancient Chinese history is from the imperial historians whose job was to tweak history to demonize the previous dynasty while overexaggerating the new dynasty they worked for. The Qin dynasty was written by Sima Qian (worked for the Han), and something to note is nobody knew where the Qin tomb was prior to the 1970s. Sima Qian writing about the Qin tomb is similar to Plato writing about Atlantis. We have found the tomb, proven there's mercury in the soil, but Sima Qian mentioned NOTHING about the terracotta warriors. What's interesting about the clay statues is the following dynasty, Han, couldn't even replicate them. Something researchers point out at the museum is how eerily similar the statues are to the craftsmanship of the ancient Greeks, and some wonder if there was some kind of collaboration with the Greeks. The Qin tomb is massive. To put this into perspective, the terracotta warriors are 1 mile away from the tomb. You need to take a shuttle bus between the 2 places. When you arrive at the tomb, I'd estimate it's about 3 football fields length and width. I had my friend with me that has to take a leak every 20 steps, so they DO have bathrooms within the tomb site. Mass graves are around the tomb and one of the pits on display had horse skeletons lined up perfectly to pull the chariot, so it's a bit morbid. I've heard rumors that a private company that makes air tight domes has solicited to the government their plans to build a structure that would allow archaeologists to safely open the tomb, but the ultimate decision would have to come from the top of the government. Might happen someday. I'm as anxious to see it as people are anxious to find the fabled Atlantis.

Cinnabar is a mercury mineral, famous for its bright red colours. So it was often used as a dye. Heat it up and catch the fumes and you get pure liquid mercury.

23:37 well we know that Qin Shi Huang's former concubines were buried in his mausoleum, but that was by order of Qin Er Shi (the Second Emperor, the Qin Dynasty was not merely one ruler) not Qin Shi Huang, and the incomplete skeletons indicate that they were killed elsewhere and buried post-mortem. As with the cases of Bai Qi executing 400,000 at Changping, and Qin Shi Huang executing 460 scholars, the idea that those poeple were buried alive is likely a misunderstanding of the historical texts. Han Dynasty writers incuding Sima Qian claimed that officials and servants being buried alongside their deceased rulers was an invention of the Qin in order to villify them; in truth it is an old Chinese custom, which there is evidence of existing as far back as the Shang Dynasty, with many of the deceased probably commiting suicide voluntarily. It's nothing much to do with Qin SHi Huang being "crazy".

The ban on excavation is also to protect the artifacts as a matter of science. When the terracotta warriors were first excavated, they had colour on them, but the pigments quickly oxidised and were lost. So the tomb will stay unexcavated until they figure out a way to protect the artifacts quickly and effectively during excavation, and when they feel like they have a good handle on the risks, which they haven't.

It wasn’t a chinese version of Trojan horse. Shu and Ba kingdoms actually hated each other and were constantly fighting. Eventually, one of the kingdoms seeked Qin’s help to fight against the other. The result was that Qin using the pretext as an ally started occupying the kingdoms and the result was them extending their stay. It is extremely unfortunate that this video did not touch on legalism and the reforms by the great legalist shangyang that changed the weak kingdom of QIn to a massive military and agriculture nation. The system was brilliant and suited the period of war and strife but as it was noted by legalists of that era, that once peace and unification was achieved, the system needs to be reformed and changed to suit the changing times. Unfortunately, the Qin government failed in doing so, thanks to the greed of Li Si and the folly of the Qin Emperor. Further when he died, his chosen successor was changed by the eunuch faction with the help with Li Si to younger stupid easily manipulated son. The crown prince and a great general Meng tian commited suicide on a fake imperial edict. History might have been different if his original intended successor succeeded the throne and one of the greatest generals in chinese history was still alive. The Spring and autumn period was the best as it practically recorded the rise and fall of several different hegemonies during that era. Some short, some Long. It deserves a lot more attention and it is really a perfect illustration of the cycles theory.

Legalism is actually derived from confucianism, and taoism is basically the opposite of confucianism (but not the legalism). The relationship of those "hundred schools of thought" is quiet a mess, and you must specify it down to individual philosopher if you really want to sort it out.

Both Legalist vs Taoist by your definition is wrong. Assuming either or assumes there can only be one or other absolute and it's a false paradigm. Humanity has the capacity for both benevolence and evil. Environment will play a large role in shaping that capacity. Freewill is the gift that gives each of us that choice, but it comes with a cost of accountability. The false paradigm justifies excuses to wield atrocities either way and does as there has always been a fringe demographic of people disconnected from conscience or soul, and plenty of civilizations have taken note and acknowledged it and dealt with these anomalies.

so, I have to ask. Is it true what they say about why china didn't achieve further technological advancements? (The reason being that they never invented a/any type of glass/telescopic lens)
@kevinli16844 жыл бұрын
They do have glasses, but never to the same level as those glasses hanging on European cathedrals. China didn't advanced into industrial revolution, but there were many inventions and technological advancements between Han and industrial revolution. For example, paper, printing, gunpowder.
@rabbitbobo41314 жыл бұрын
That is the problem with "state own" enterprise, they have the technology but it is either lost or burned.. because the technology is not know on the common level.. so when a kingdom falls a lot of technology or expertise of that era will fall with it.. they didn't make telescope but they do make stain glass.. which i think was a part of the deal with Marco Polo, but then this tech was lost due to the chage in kingdoms. most noticible would be China, as in clay. That is why so many historian are so facinated by it.. because each era has their own production.. even some very early production are superior to much later kingdoms.
