For the other two lines on the orthodox cross, the top one refernces the sign the Romans put on the cross saying "Jesus Christ, king of the Jews" in Latin Greek, and Hebrew. The slanted line at the bottom references the two other people that were crucified along with Jesus. It is slanted because it signifies that one person sought redemption from Jesus, saying to him "Lord, Remember me in heaven" and the other one did not

The Council of Nicaea wasn't all that monentous, once Arius' views were espoused... only 2 people (out of 250-319) sided wth him, and only 17 total had sympathetic views, and a lot of that came from the translational issues mentioned. Remember, also, that arius' views were novel, at the time, and against what was being taught... they weren't anything like an equal and just as likely view. Zeitgeist and Murdoch hyped it as some near-run race, but it was nothing of the like.

The Nicene Creed (NAI-SEEN KREED) Remains one of the most recited prayers in Catholicism. It's said just before Communion at any standard service.
@drumkommandr97793 жыл бұрын
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look to the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. -every part of the preceding has been shown to be complete fallacy bordering on intentional falsehood, and such has been done several times a day for milennia. Belief in this creed shows the world you've willingly given up your independent thought. Those who consider this a positive act are the root of the 'problem'.

The cross either the slanted beam at the bottom is the Russian Orthodox Cross. The Russian Orthodox cross can be considered a modified version of the Patriarchal cross, having two smaller crossbeams, one at the top and one near the bottom, in addition to the longer crossbeam. One suggestion is the lower crossbeam represents the footrest (suppedaneum) to which the feet of Jesus were nailed. In some earlier representations (and still currently in the Greek Church) the crossbar near the bottom is straight or slanted upwards. In later Slavic and other traditions, it came to be depicted as slanted, with the side to the viewer's left usually being higher. One tradition says that this comes from the idea that as Jesus Christ took his last breath, the bar to which his feet were nailed broke, thus slanting to the side. Another tradition holds that the slanted bar represents the repentant thief and the unrepentant thief that were crucified with Christ, the one to Jesus' right-hand repenting and rising to be with God in Paradise, and one on his left falling to Hades and separation from God. And yes I copied and pasted this from Wikipedia.

The schism may have happened in 1054, but no one in the general public gave a crap about it until the 4th Crusade where Constantinople was sacked. Despite the schism, people still venerated the same saints. Basil the Great was one example. The problem before the official 1054 break up was partially political and partially theological. One of the big issues was language. The Trinity is already convoluted enough. Now try to translate that into a language without the aid of the internet.

I’m not sure about the top, but the bottom board represents a sort of scale. On the falling side are those who deny Christ and descend into hell, on the rising side are those who accept him and ascend to heaven. The upward side of the cross is always supposed to point north, which means you can use the orthodox cross on top of buildings as a compass. Fun fact about St. Andrew’s church in my hometown Kyiv, Ukraine. It has a central dome with a cross and several smaller ones around it atop towers. Each cross is a typical X one. But if you stand at a particular location on the street, you see the central cross and one of those atop smaller domes appear as the Orthodox cross (minus the diagonal bar). I’ve been told that the architect wasn’t allowed to put the Orthodox cross on the church, so he cheated a little. I’ve found no evidence of this, though. Still, makes for an interesting story

That guy's pronunciation of Nicaea is driving me crazy. He gets hard c right, but then can't make up his mind about the ae diphthong. Ancient Greek: Νίκαια (/ni.kai.a/) -> Classical Latin Nicaea (/ni.kai.a/) -> Ecclesiastical Latin Nicaea (/ni.t͡ʃe.a/) -> English transliterative interpretation Nicaea (/nai.si.a/). In the Greek and Classical Latin orthography, the letter-to-sound correspondence was way more regular. Except in some diphthongs, Latin I was pronounced like English 'ee.' Latin C was always pronounced like K. Latin AE was always pronounced like English 'eye.' For example, that's the relationship between Caesar and Kaiser. That guy's like "Ni-kay-a," "Ni-kee-a," and "Ni-keh-a." I wish he'd just say it the English way instead.

I think the main problems began was when Byzantine lost Rome around 700 AD and the Papal States were formed and then the Pope crowned Charlemagne as the Roman emperor, even though the Byzantines were the true Romans. The Creed _wasn't_ vague, though. The Orthodox belief was/is that there are three branches, as one: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father, but is glorified equally with both the Father *and* the Son, because... well, they're three, as one. The heresies of the day were bunching them together, merging two or all three, and/or making them unequal. The Catholics changed the Creed to make them unequal, which was heretical. Not a Great Schism, so much as just plain rejecting Orthodoxy and leaving the Church (I'm going to make my own One True Faith! With blackjack! And hookers!). EDIT: That's why the emphasis on Christmas is a problem. Pascha (Easter) is freeing humanity from Original Sin, etc., and is basically the origin of Christianity (to strive to be Christ-like). The focus on Christmas changes that to make the birth of Christ be more important, than the reason that Christ was born, in the first place.
@dispen2753 жыл бұрын
You clearly have no idea what are you talking about. Famous "filioque" was added in western church due to language differences as words in latin are more vauge in interpretation. There were a lot of Arian heretics in the west at that time claiming that if Holy Spirit detrives from Father but not from Jesus means that Jesus is not equal to Father therefore not divine Western Church added that to respect the creed and fight the heresy ---> it was to emphasise that they are equal not to create some hierarchy within the trinity And its not doctrinal, Pope Benedict XVI avoided "filioque" several times during masses. Pope and Patriarch of Moscow signed declaration that it is not considered a point of disagreement between two Churches, Patriarch Bartholomew speaks in simmilar manner It is not "I'm going to make my own One True Faith! With blackjack! And hookers!" it was missunderstanding not meant to insult anyone, quite on the contrary in fact And the part with "emphasis on Christmass" is pop culture thing not bound to Catholicism, any Roman Catholic will tell you that Easter is by far most important for the reasson you just presented

I respectfully object to your description of the Council of Nicaea. You describe it as though a great many dissenting opinions arrived regarding the question “Who is Jesus?” In truth, the council was manned by an extreme majority who taught that Jesus is a divine being (that is, he is of the same substance as the Father) while Arius and a few other bishops taught Jesus was a created being.

As a Serbian Orthodox I can say that in today's Orthodoxy besides "minor" theological differences and the whole marrying thing, and in Orthodoxy all monks also have to live in celibacy so for a person to assume any position higher then a priest he must live in celibacy, but the what I feel the main difference is papal infallibility which is not and can't be a thing in Orthodoxy, every man is flawed even if he is a priest, bishop or patriarch, and papal authority is also a big deal, in Orthodoxy autonomy of every patriarch is a big deal and none has authority over others not even the patriarch of Constantinople. And within Orthodox churches patriarchs authority is limited to the decisions of the episcopal council.
@gottenspider20573 жыл бұрын
Papal infallibility doesn’t mean the pope can’t be wrong. He’s still a flawed man like you said. It means that when he speaks Ex Cathedra (from the Chair of St. Peter) on matters of faith and morals he is protected by the Holy Spirit from defining error. We understand this faculty to work the same as an Ecumenical Council, which (as believed by both Catholics and Orthodox) is protected by the Holy Spirit from defining error. The infallibility of a Council doesn’t mean that the bishops at the council can’t be wrong about anything, so the same applies to Papal Infallibility.
