There are more than 100 other companies that give you all your utility needs. Apple is a design company. Considering their aesthetic and material quality, they are doing amazing products and constantly take risks on removing clutters to improve the design. In the long-term, having a single type of input and output on EVERY device for data transfer and to power is a HUGE improvement in peoples lives with objects. People said the same thing when they removed the cd-rom and adobe flash and now it's a standard. As Henry Ford put it “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”

Fabulous history piece. I'm local and thought I knew most history but I didn't know Jonny Ive went that far back. I knew of Newton and Apple 'greige' machines and am impressed he stuck it out. He and Steve clearly had a symbiosis that will be hard for anyone to duplicate.

The 2013 Mac Pro and 2016 MacBook Pro are good examples of products where Ive had too much influence. Design should be second to functionality; if something doesn't work, then it matters not how it looks.
