When you design in Apple. Your designs belong to Apple. When you design in your own company. Even if Apple buys over your company, your family gets paid forever on every product sold.

People hit the wall with creativity all the time and a change up is needed to keep creativity flowing. Ives knew that in the Apple sphere his creativity was hitting a wall but at the same time his creativity outside the sphere was still there, He is moving on to pursue other creative endeavors and opening the door for Apple to bring in new creative minds before they hit the wall of walls and loose their market edge,

Ive did some good work from 1992 to until the mid 2000's. The last decade he either lost interest, common sense, or control. Being "thin" should not trump functionality. And yet that is exactly the road Ive/Apple has taken. @@YaroLord They still make up more than 50% of the US smartphone market share. They've never been ahead of the trends, but they've always innovated the trends. They weren't the first to release a smartwatch, but they were the first to release a smartwatch that made sense to consumers. They weren't the first to release wireless earbuds, but they were the first to release automatic pairing gesture-controlled fully wireless earbuds, that also looked unique when compared to the competition. They weren't the first to release a smartphone, but they still lead the smartphone market and have for over a decade. I think people don't realize that Apple has never been about designing the newest tech, they have been about innovating an underappreciated market and showing consumers that a new piece of technology is more than just a tacky gimmick.

@@nmlss Kinda stupid of you, then. Apple under cook has made some incredibly questionable decisions. 1. Steadily increasing prices for less and less hardware. 2. Privacy breach and spying on users through their mics to ”improve siri”, regardless of your privacy settings. 3. $999 stand. 4. Almost yearly worse internal macbook designs with the crappiest thermals I’ve ever seen in a laptop, causing bottlenecking in addition to the slew of other design flaws that lead to board failures etc. 5. Soldered RAM and SSDs. Do I even need to go on? Apple hasn’t innovated since the release of the first ipad. It’s just been the same old since then with minor upgrades every year. And sometimes, they’re not even upgrades.

@ChrisTopheRaz

This comment smells of internal bias. Johnny Ives, alongside of Steve Jobs, literally saved the company and changed the world. Not to mention that he thought just like Steve Jobs in the sense that product. Perfection is only one part appearance, and that functionality played a bigger role in the quality of the product. What you’re talking about sounds more like something that would come from Steve Jobs. In case you missed the infamous video where Steve speaks to an audience and gets heckled by an audience member about Java. He goes on to explain that apple prefers to build products based on what people need, not what they think they want. He was a visionary that sought into the future. Basically, he knew that there were technologies that wouldn’t last. I don’t disagree that that can be frustrating as a user, but it certainly was unlikely to be Johny we can blame for that.

He was once touted as the successor to Steve Jobs, and if he was running Apple instead of Tim, he probably wouldn't be leaving. But he was probably a much better fit as creative head of products, instead of worrying about all the other accounting and administrative stuff. He had a great run, and it's probably a good decision for Jony. Thanks Jony for all your inspiring designs over the years that made Apple products such a joy! Wishing him all the luck in the world and looking forward to his cool designs for other products.

S8 had basically no vessels but the S9 has the same design. S10 amazing and I think the S20 as well has same design but they are doing the Z flip. As someone who worked at Apple, I can tell you, when Tim Cook took over, the company culture changed dramatically. The reason Apple's market value skyrocketed under Tim Cook, was because Steve Jobs didn't care about market value, and focused on customer experience. Tim Cook "Min/Maxed" customer experience in favor of getting market value to go up. Steve Jobs never, and would have never done that. The policies that Tim Cook implemented directly worked towards leveraging Apple's good name, and reputation for good customer experience to make more money while providing the least customer service possible without overtly damaging Apple's reputation beyond what marketing could hide.

Look objectively. An iMac in 2019 looks exactly the same as an iMac in 2009. An iPad and an iPad Mini in 2019 look exactly the way they looked in 2013. iPhones from 5 to 8 looks almost like clones, with slight difference only in size. So, maybe it is actually true that Jony Ive was not allowed to be overly creative about product design?

No one here appears to refer to the negative feedback to some of Ive's last product designs for Apple - i.e., the MacBook fiasco. I can't imagine, particularly for a creative person, that such a reception and backlash doesn't influence your decisions. Personally, I think this might be a good thing for Apple: key creative people should never stick around for too long, and there were other signs Ive's interests were going elsewhere.

It’s going to be a huge loss. He helped Steve Jobs, when he was reviving Apple in the late ‘90s. A lot of the beautiful Macs, iPods, iPhones, iPads, etc. have been designed by Jony Ive. I don’t know what they’ll do without him, and the products haven’t exactly been revolutionary each year, like they were from the late ‘90s to 2011. The design stays very similar. Like the iMac has had a very similar design for 10 years. But their products are good and solid. I’ve owned Apple products since 2007, starting with an iPod. Their products were always what you’d dream about owning, if you weren’t from a wealthy family. Then you’re an adult and you can invest thousands into buying into their ecosystem, like I have.

I would add that Apple's design aesthetic has changed very little in the past 10 years. iMacs, iPads, iPhones are locked into a predictable mix of aluminum and glass. Maybe buttons change, corners are more rounded, size differences, but we all know roughly what the next generation of each will probably look like. Compare that to the previous 10+ years of Apple and the wild designs of the iMac. I imagine Jony feels like he's done about all he can do. The Mac Pro was probably his last big project, since the previous trashcan design was so disliked, but what did it change to? They went back to the aluminum tower design. I think Apple is locked into this obviously very successful aesthetic and Jony's ready for a change.

The Apple Watch was one of the last products Steve touched. Giving the credit to Tim is laughable. The AirPods are literally earbuds. WOW INNOVATIVE *eyeroll* Just because Apple is making more money doesn't mean their products are innovative. Johnny didn't ONLY leave because Apple no longer innovates, especially in design, but it's obvious it was a major component. There. Just blew your entire video out of the water. You're welcome.

It’s evident that old school Apple isn’t around anymore. iOS 14 is a clear indication that Apple is ready to move forward.

I don't deny his talent but both Jonathan needed Jobs and Jobs needed Jonathan. Steve Jobs was an excellent product and software designer even though he never written the codes neither product design work.. he has the excellent concept in his mind and Jonathan made it real. Steve's ideal products were always in his head (mind) and excellent worker (helper) like Jonathan makes it real. realize.

The tech industries like many others , has its high and low . It’s just normal to have a direction change if it’s deem to happen that way . For a consumer perception , a product that is helpful in life is the only driven motivation to get these things .

Okay, but where is the innovation? Cook is a marketing person. He knows what to sells. But Steve was right, he isn't focused on making what made Apple the best company in the world: innovation

Cheap? Trust me, I had one of those Power Macintosh models shown in the video, and they were anything but cheap. It cost about 4000 dollars for the whole setup, including a color printer that was cutting edge at the time. The closest thing to cheap mass market Apple was the first iMac.

ugh, this tim cook praising video is really hart to watch. let me get some fact straight. - Jony and Steve had the same Vision for the company. - Jony is the main reason that apple is the point where there are. Steve saw that potential. - Since Steve passed away Apple had no real invention. It is just a money printing machinery. - The last invention they let Jony finalize was the best Macbook ever. The Macbook 12". That should lead apple into a new are. But it was not making enough money at that time so they removed it again. - Since then you have never heard Jonys Voice in any Video anymore. - Jony said once that one of the reasons for his leave is that the company is not inovative anymore. - Apple will earn good money in the next few years. But their days are counted. - The only reason people buy iPhones is because Android sucks brutally. - The only reason people buy Macbooks is that there no quality alternatives out there. As soon the surfaces from MS will reach apple quality standard they will outrun Apple. - As soon Windows mobile is ready to go, iPhones will have no chance at all anymore. Jony I miss you and I am very very thankfull that you used your veto against Tim and gifted me with "The Macbook", I was waiting for years and I am using it every day from then. Need a new battery though. Wish there would be a "The Macbook 2", dude I would pay again 3k for that, and with Win 10 I would even pay 5k. Think about it.
