Gyrocopter is a trade name Igor Bensen used for his gyros. Gyroplane is the official FAA designation for all of them. Regarless of what they are called they all use the same basic principals to fly. An engine either pulls or pushes the aircraft and the rotors spin freely.

It's difficult to find infos and video on autogiro. It's very interesting and very nice, thanks!

If you are really interested in what Cierva thought process was and how he solved problems...try to htis book he wrote: Wings of Tomorrow The Story of The Autogiro Check your libray fo it. There no reprints and they are collectibles. I have two myself!!!

Sorry, my comment not clear: At 1:51 is an old HELICOPTER. Several reasons it falls over: 1) Narrator is correct (however equal pitch of blades there's always some static and dynamic error- as you suggest !) 2) Pendular stability: The craft 'rolls' off the compressed air cushion, which is less likely to happen with a tall rotor mast 3) slight breezes will affect hovering craft (flapping hinge would solve that). Rigid rotor models tip over but the new 'Hiller' hubbed R/C toys are perfect: Hinged

I am surprised by the wrong explanation on Direct Control! There was not cyclic control in the C.30, the hole rotor disc was tilted to the direction of the turn, with the overhanging stick. Collective was available in later models to achieve 'Jump Take off'. But no cyclic was used.

The real father of the Helicopter. Sikorski used his invention then added a rear rotor for stability..

Sikorsky lost in court to Pitcairn. Igor was connected politically, and paid Pitcairn for patents. Cierva worked with Pitcairn on the cyclic and other control features.

@@chrismofer - You are wrong. Without his 1920's flexible rotors (His Autogyro), no helicopter could be used beyond been stationary in no winds at all only. They added controls to the flexible rotors of The Cierva Autogyro later on so it could fly sideways and backwards too (The Helicopter).

The helicopter replaced the autogyro,mostly due to its ability to hover. However autogyros are far less complex and more reliable. Currently I know of one company that tries to revive the autogyro, for people who want aircraft with STOL characteristics but at reduced price.
@ZioStalin7 жыл бұрын
They are also way much cheaper and massively more fuel efficient. Gyroplanes are wonderful.

It's surprising that this documentary ended with the final development of the modern helicopter and totally ignored the revival of the autogyro in the form of the Benson type gyrocopter.

Poorly explained. As the rotor disc moves FOWARD into the on coming air, the 'advancing' blade is going faster into the wind (aircraft speed + blade rotation speed) and the other blade is slower (the 'retreating' blade). That causes more lift on one side of the rotor disc. Consequently the disc rolls over (like tilting a frisbee over). A flapping hinge reduces the lift on the advancing blade by lowering its angle of attack because the on coming air is now flowing slightly downward over the blade
@TVCheaper5 жыл бұрын
Wrong both blades are traveling at the same speed. The advancing blade has a higher AOA and thus more lift. The retreating blade at the same speed reduces AOAand produces less lift
@RoadRunnerLaser5 жыл бұрын
Jeff Harrison - In reference to the air, no, they are not. If the aircraft is moving through the air at 50mph, and the blade-tips are travelling at 100mph, the advancing blade is travelling at 100+50mph through the air whereas the retreating blade is travelling at 100-50mph through the air. That is why the terms "advancing blade" and "retreating blade" exist. Look up those terms as they pertain to rotorcraft. One of the limiting factors of a rotorcraft is blade-stall. This is where the aircraft's airspeed is high enough for the retreating blade to lose lift because its airspeed is too low producing a significant asymmetry of lift across the rotordisc.
@fryncyaryorvjink21404 жыл бұрын
@@RoadRunnerLaser they've probably already thought of this, but if you add a fixed wing on the retreating side can you fly faster? I've also heard gyroscopic precession causes the front to lift reducing speed, so thats not helping
