The funny thing is that Peter Noone despised this sugary, goody two shoes style. He would rather have worn a leather jacket and jeans and sung much more serious music, as anyone from Manchester would want to do. But Herman's Hermits were "groomed" to be this way and of course it turned out to be successful. Sort of like an alternative to the rough and tumble Stones, Animals etc. Turned out to be a good career move after all.

That's the Spencer Davis Group doing "I'm A Man." Came out in January, 1967 with lead vocals by Steve Winwood.

I heard a radio DJ talk about when he saw the Who in concert, with Herman's Hermits as the opening act. Can you imagine? Funny.

Yeah, in a USA tour in June, 1967, the Who *DID* open up for Herman's Hermits. Crazzyyy! By 1967 Herman's Hermits were sort of on their way out as pop teen idols. 1967 was a big turning point in Rock music.

Peter Noone definitely knew how to play the part very well...must have been thinking the song was shit but in his head he is counting the dollars rolling in....probably couldn't believe his luck.

Talking about the "dark side of rock," it was also in the 1967 / 1968 time period that Charles Manson did some recordings of his original songs. Yes, 1967 was THE year . . . .

Pop music is essentially conservative in musical terms, provided from record companies, and it's just about love. Beatle songs like "Tomorrow Never Knows", "Strawberry Fields", "Helter Skelter", or "Eleanor Rigby" and so on, meet NONE of these criteria. Hence, The Beatles are NOT a pop band.

does anyone know the name of the song in the opening credits? (the one that goes "is she really going out with him?)

Actually the oncoming psychedelic scene with such bands as ( The ) Pink Floyd ( Sound ) in '66 was already countering the sugary pop of Herman's and the others. Sometimes documentaries are a bit inaccurate.

Mods always rejected those pop groups. Maybe now it's seemed as 6t's sound and acceptable. The kids were not paying much attention even to the Stones after "Come on" went on to lists. They always looked into deeper and deeper black sounds.
